MORNING UPDATE.

.DISCUSSION...

Main updates for the morning were to lower high temperatures a
degree or two as the extensive coverage of showers and
thunderstorms should help keep temps a bit lower. Other updates
were to hourly PoPs to better align with latest trends in
guidance. The high wind warning and flash flood watch is in great
shape with no changes needed.

Wanted to talk about the environment expected this afternoon and
evening. The main mid/upper lvl trough continues to dominate much
of the CONUS this morning with the main shortwave showing up
clearly in moisture channels. This shortwave and associated speed
max will translate east as this shortwave digs into the MS river
valley. Impressive kinematics will overspread much of the
southeast this afternoon with 80-100 kt mid level winds. An
associated low level jet is expected to develop late this morning
peaking near 60-70 knots. This LLJ is already starting to be seen
in the HTX Vad wind profile with strengthening flow just above
4kft. From a more mesoscale picture, a warm front is currently
just to our south and west generally from northern MS through
northern AL and into central GA. Plenty of showers continue to
overspread along and north of this boundary. MUCAPE increases just
south of this boundary where an increase in lightning activity
can be seen. This front will continue its northerly motion thorugh
the morning and into the afternoon. All available hi-res guidance
suggests showers and embedded thunderstorms will increase in
areal coverage through the morning and afternoon. While this
normally will keep boundary layer instability on the lower side, I
think the impressive LLJ will aid in advection and should
overcome this. Also, guidance is pointing at some clearing taking
place late this afternoon. If some sun can come out then this
heating could encourage further increases in instability.

The shear/CAPE parameter space is concerning to say the least.
Deep layer shear will only increase by the afternoon and into the
evening hours. 0-0.5km/0-1km/0-3km shear near 35/45/70 knots
respectively suggest that the environment will be more than
conducive for rotating updrafts today. SRH between 400-600m2/s2
leading to large looping hodographs combined with >300j/kg of
MLCAPE suggests tornado potential increases late this afternoon
and into the early evening for the southern valley and portions of
the Cumberland Plateau. The threat of long-tracked supercellular
structures and long-track tornadoes are also possible given the
low LCL's, 0-3km CAPE, and impressive near surface shear. Again
this window seems to be from 00z-03z. HREF and HRRR continue to
show several updraft helicity tracks through the area further
increasing confidence of the above. Further severe weather hazards
will be damaging winds and large hail with any of these supercell
structures or any semi-linear convective structures.

.AVIATION...
12Z TAF DISCUSSION.

An impactful storm system will cause significant aviation impacts
at all of the sites today and into tonight with multiple chances
for showers this morning and into the early afternoon. This will
bring chances for MVFR to near IFR. Chances for thunderstorms will
increase later in the afternoon and into the evening with better
chances at CHA as a warm front spreads northward into the area.
Some of these storms could be strong to severe with damaging winds
and a potential of a tornado. Later in the evening and into the
first part tonight, a secondary warm front will push northward,
bringing more chances for widespread thunderstorms.
Southerly winds will also increase later in the day with near LLWS
criteria being met. During this time and onward, gusts to near or
above 30 kts are possible. Also, chances for strong storms with
strong winds and potential for a tornado all exists at CHA and TYS
with lesser threat at TRI. A line of storms moves through ahead of
a cold front late tonight, which will eventually shift winds to a
more westerly direction beyond the period.

Severe thunderstorms are possible today and tonight with
moderate to heavy rainfall expected. The primary hazards will be
damaging winds and small hail. However, there remains a threat
for a few tornadoes late this afternoon through the early
overnight hours. In addition to the severe thunderstorm hazards,
there is a threat for localized flash flooding as rainfall rates

information.

Strong winds are also expected across the area this afternoon into
tonight with gusts likely in excess of 40 mph area-wide. See the
Wind Advisory for additional information. Damaging winds are
expected in the Tennessee mountains and adjacent foothills this
afternoon into tonight where gusts will likely exceed 70 mph. See

southern Tennessee Valley and southern Cumberland Plateau will be
a few tornadoes, widespread destructive winds, and hail. Strong,
long-tracked tornadoes will also be possible. Localized flash
flooding will be possible with heavy rainfall rates and antecedent

...Severe Weather Expected Today And Tonight Across The Tennessee
Valley...

A strong storm system will move across the southeast United States
today and tonight bringing heightened chances for severe
thunderstorms to the Tennessee Valley region. Damaging winds in
excess of 70 to 80 mph and tornadoes are possible. The greatest
threat area for tornadoes will be across the southern Tennessee
Valley and Cumberland Plateau late this afternoon into the evening
hours, including Chattanooga Metro. A secondary tornado threat
will exist in the late evening to early overnight hours, generally
along and west of Interstate 75. There is a possibility that some
of these tornadoes could be strong and long lived. In addition to
the severe weather threats, moderate to heavy rainfall is
expected into Friday morning which could lead to isolated flash
flooding.

Now is the time to review your severe weather safety plan. Know
where your safe shelter is located at home, work, school, and
other places you regularly go. Make sure you have multiple ways to
receive warnings as power outages are likely.

If a tornado warning is issued for your area, that is the time to
take action. Go inside to the lowest level of your home or
building and stay away from windows and outside walls.
