.SHORT TERM...(Today and Tonight)...

Key Messages:

1. Drying out today with clouds sticking around through the
afternoon.

2. Clearing tonight with more widespread frost and freeze.

Discussion:

Upper shortwave and jet axis supporting synoptic ascent and light
precip across our southern and southeastern zones will continue to
move eastward today. A few areas of light rain will continue this
morning with sprinkles/flurries across the mountains through the
afternoon. However, no notable weather impacts expected with this
weak system. This shortwave axis should finally pass through and
move east of the region this afternoon around 21z with height
increases and subsidence resulting in some clearing sky conditions
later today and this evening. With the upper troughing and
northerly surface flow, temperatures continue to be much below
normal.

With clouds clearing tonight and a surface area of high pressure
moving southeast toward the Ohio Valley and Central Appalachians,
we'll have weak winds and a clear sky expected across our northern
areas. This is where temperatures should drop below freezing with
a Freeze Warning in effect. Further south, model guidance is in
less agreement with how much of the cloud cover clears out. Still
think most of it clears out by sunrise on Friday with frost
possible area-wide. A Frost Advisory has been issued for these
areas.

.LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday)...

Key Messages:

1. Dry weather expected with a warming trend for the long term
period.

Discussion:

Not much to discus as quiet weather is expected over the weekend and
through at least the first half of next week. Broad mid level
troughing with a surface trough will slowly move through over the
weekend which will delay the warmer weather a bit. By next week the
trough will have moved off to the east and ridging will begin to
build in, along with surface high pressure. These will lead to clear
skies and temperatures back in the 60's for the first half of next
week. Ridge looks like it will flatten out during the second half of
the week and some of the models want to bring through a weak front
on Thursday. Not all models depict this, and those that do are still
predominantly dry, so will continue with no PoP chances in the
forecast at this point.

Looking beyond the 7-day forecast, a low pressure system could swing
through the area over the weekend. Some of the models want to
generate large amounts of snow with this system BUT (and we can't
stress this enough) this is still 10+ days out... The models can and
will change over the next 240 hours. This is a long winded way of
saying: if you see a model snowfall forecast 7+ days in the future,
take it with a MOUNTAIN of salt.

Light rain showers continues early in the period at CHA with rain
decreasing in coverage around 15z. Impacts will be limited to MVFR
cigs at CHA, including cigs lower than 2k ft. MVFR cigs between
2k-3k ft expected at TYS and TRI. Once the system moves east of
the area early this afternoon, clouds should begin to decrease
with VFR conditions by the end of the period.
