.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Friday)
Issued at 317 PM EST THU DEC 2 2021

Snow has been winding down as the day has progressed, thanks to
surface high pressure briefly stopping by. That said, some hints
continue to be picked up by models of some lingering LES bands in
the east, given continued favorable lake/airmass conditions and
repeated vort maxes aloft allowing for a lifting boost with the
upper jet streak lingering overhead. Additionally, although
there's a bit of a lull in more conducive moisture content in the
850-700mb layer, there appears to be just enough to combine with
the aforementioned ingredients to allow for continued PoPs. So,
combining all of this together, forecast through tonight yields
continued mentionable PoPs but fairly low QPF/snow amounts where
PoPs occur.

For tomorrow, more widespread PoPs, albeit low, re-emerge as yet
the next clipper system approaches toward the end of this forecast
period. Plus, not much of an upper-level pattern change, so still
upper jet streak overhead, vort maxes marching through, etc. But,
with the synoptic setup ill-defined/messy, hence the limiting
factors feeding into the low PoPs/low accums. In other words,
expect a typical early winter day with hit-and-miss snow showers
across the U.P.

Non-diurnal temperature trend today will rest tonight into
tomorrow. Lows will generally range in the 20s, with a few teens
appearing, and highs will top out near to slightly above normal
for early December, in the 30s.

.LONG TERM...(Friday night through Thursday)

A somewhat active extended period is expected with most of the focus
early in the period.  First, a weak 500 mb shortwave is progged to
drift through Ontario on Friday night, triggering some widespread
light snow showers.  As the wave drifts farther eastward,
northwesterly flow over the lake could enhance the LES chances over
the far eastern counties, leading to some accumulating snowfall.
However, the upper pattern will quickly become more zonal through
Saturday night.  At that point though, focus then turns to the next
trough dipping into the Upper Midwest.  Latest ensemble means remain
consistent with previous runs and have even shown a bit of
strengthening in Sunday's system.

Far western portions of Upper MI could start seeing some snowfall
late Saturday night, but the best isentropic lift doesn't really
enter the forecast area until the Sun 12-18Z time frame.  Snow could
become moderate and possible heavy at times during that time period.
 As the system pushes farther eastward Sunday night, the dry slot
will make its way into the region, and any additional snowfall will
likely be lake effect with just limited wraparound moisture. After
that, the pattern will become zonal once again until the next weak
wave tracks through Wisconsin around midweek.

Meanwhile, temperatures will plummet in the wake of Sunday's system
as strong cold advection overtakes the area.  Overnight lows will
fall below zero over much of the U.P. on Monday night with little
recovery until Wednesday. Daytime highs on Tuesday will only top off
in the teens.

.AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Friday night)

Any lingering flurries at KSAW should end by 07-08z. A low pressure
trough/cold front will move through the area late Fri
afternoon/evening and could bring more light snow or flurries to the
terminals. Greatest chance for any reduction in vsby from snow would
be at KIWD Fri afternoon. MVFR conditions are expected to prevail at
all the sites during the forecast period. West winds will become
somewhat gusty behind the front Fri evening and could reach 25-30 kt
at times at KIWD and KCMX.

Winds tonight will continue to slacken well below gales, with a
reprieve through late tomorrow. The potential for gale-force gusts
return Friday night well into Saturday from out of the W to WNW.
Then another reprieve from gales emerges in the middle of the
weekend with the next chance of potential gales late Sunday well
into Monday, initially NErly becoming NWrly. Winds then look to
remain below gales through much of the rest of next week.
