.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Sunday)

Water vapor imagery and RAP analysis show a shortwave trof moving
across northern Ontario with a second more important wave moving
across Alberta/Saskatchewan. With the lead wave, an associated sfc
trof is moving across the fcst area this aftn. Other than the breezy
conditions, mainly ahead of it, and the wind shift, this trof is
crossing the area with little fanfare as a dry column from the sfc
toward the mid-levels has prevented any pcpn. A narrow band of post
frontal stratocu is crossing the Keweenaw, but otherwise, mid/high
clouds are currently clearing out from the w. Temps across the fcst
area are in the upper 30s/lwr 40s.
In the wake of the lead shortwave, a weak sfc high pres ridge will
quickly cross the fcst area tonight. Clearing skies and a dry column
(precipitable water of 0.1-0.15 inch/around 30pct of normal), will
support excellent radiational cooling during the rather short window
of light/calm wind associated with the quickly passing high pres
ridge. Continued along the lines of the previous fcst in favoring
the lower end of avbl guidance. Expect mid/upper teens F over much
of the interior w half, ranging up to generally 25-30F along the
Great Lakes.
An abrupt change in the weather is on the way on Sun as the
shortwave currently over Alberta/Saskatchewan sharply amplifies
while moving to Lake Superior/Upper MI. 12hr 500mb height falls
ending at 00z Mon are impressive at around 250m, centered over s
central Lake Superior/n central Upper MI. Despite the strong deep
layer forcing, lack of moisture inflow to the wave will result in
limited pcpn away from lake enhancement. Most areas will see a brief
period of -shsn with cold fropa, but in the snow belts favored by nw
winds, there will be the typical lake enhanced burst of hvy snow
with fropa. Given how quickly the front will be moving, the +shsn
along the cold front won't likely last more than an hr, maybe only
15-30 minutes for the majority of locations. Could be a quick inch
of snow, maybe locally as much as 2 inches, followed by gusty nw
winds of 25-35mph under strong caa, up to 40-45mph for areas
directly exposed to nw winds across Lake Superior. Models are in
good agreemnt showing a pres rise/fall couplet of +4mb/-6mb per 3hr,
which will give an additional boost to the wind. For the Keweenaw,
the favorable postfontal wind direction boosted by the isallobaric
wind (its wind direction will be nearly parallel to the gradient
wind direction) may push gusts toward 55mph for a couple of hrs
immediately after fropa. Some power outages a possibility. BLSN
won't be nearly the concern that it would be if we were farther into
the snow season and had a good existing snowpack or a lot of new
snow was accumulating on Sun. Still, the strength of the winds and
resulting blsn will lead to sharply reduced vis at times.
After fropa, nw flow LES will begin to organize, delayed a bit by
a few hrs of drier air immediately following front. With the
strong low-level wind fields to around 40kt, the organizing nw
flow LES will spread farther inland than typical. It will also
result in the LES enhancement from terrain/convergence being
displaced off the Keweenaw. So, snowfall there will be lighter
than what will occur to the s over areas such as Baraga
County/southern Houghton County. However, even in those areas to
the s, the drier/well-mixed look on fcst soundings of the low-
level air advecting across the lake suggests organizing LES may
struggle to some degree. At this point, including the expected
snowfall with the fropa, probably not looking at more than 1-2 to
locally 3 inches of snow w on Sun. The eastern fcst area will have
the benefit of a longer fetch across Lake Superior, but the
organizing LES probably won't really get into full swing until
evening. So, expect 1-2 inches of snow Alger County to Luce county
on Sun, mainly with the snow burst associated with fropa. Temps
will fall after fropa as strong caa drops 850mb temps roughly 10C
in 6hrs. After highs in the low/mid 30s w and around 40F e, temps
by sunset will have fallen to the low/mid 20s w and lwr 30s e.
The strong nw winds will build large waves to 10 to 14 feet over
western Lake Superior in the aftn, leading to minor beach
flooding/erosion, particularly from around Ontonagon n to around
Copper Harbor.
.LONG TERM...(Sunday night through Saturday)

We start off the extended period a cold front completing its trek
across the eastern UP. Behind this front, expect lake-effect snow in
the northwest wind lake effect belts, with blustery northwest gusts
up to around 25 to 40 mph across the area slowly improving
throughout Sunday night as the cold front continues to move east out
of Upper MI. Lakeshore flooding looks to be a concern near Lake
Superior, especially from Alger County eastward Sunday night and
Monday; while significant wave heights in the west are expected to
reach only around 13 feet, waves in the east could reach up to 18
feet. Therefore, some beach erosion and lakeshore flooding is a
possibility Sunday night into Monday along Lake Superior, especially
from Alger County eastward. As for the snowfall, expecting a few
inches in the northwest wind lake effect belts Sunday night into
Monday morning, especially from around Munising eastward; could see
up to around 4 inches of snowfall in the western northwest wind lake
effect belts, whereas there could be 6 to 8 inches possible out
east. One concern about the snowfall totals not being realized is
that the PWATs are pretty dry. In fact, ensemble guidance showed
PWATs in the 10th percentile until around Monday night. However, I
think the lake will help overcome the dryness, as even the ensembles
show PWATs increasing near the lakeshores and east. Therefore, I'm
fairly confident we will realize those snow totals. The snowfall
also should be drier than what we've been seeing recently;
therefore, given the blustery conditions and dry snowfall, we could
see some patches of blowing snow in the northwest wind lake effect
belts Sunday night into Monday. Therefore, caution should be taken
if traveling Sunday night and Monday morning, as visibilities could
be significantly reduced in the heaviest parts of the snowbands and
where blowing snow is seen! As a high pressure ridge approaches from
the west Monday, expect the lake-effect snow to end from west to
east Monday afternoon into Monday night. Expect lows Sunday night to
get into the teens to low 20s across most of the area, with highs
Monday staying below freezing across Upper MI.
As the peak of the ridge arrives Monday night, expect clearer skies
and drier conditions. Therefore, we could see a decrease in the low
temp Monday night even though WAA is occurring, as clear skies will
allow more longwave radiation to escape from the sfc. Expect warmer
conditions by the middle of the week as WAA continues over the area.
Given that 850mb temps should be around 5 to 10C Tuesday and
Wednesday, and that ensembles are show 850mb temps approaching the
90th percentile over Upper MI at the same time period, we could see
some highs get into the high 40s across parts of the UP Wednesday.
As we experience some nice, pleasant weather during the middle of
next week, another Clipper system is expected to dig into the
Northern Plains Tuesday night. This system should then begin lifting
towards northern Ontario Wednesday. Therefore, we could start to see
a weak cold front beginning to move across the area Wednesday. This
front should keep conditions dry across the area, save for maybe the
east as a shortwave from the Southern Plains lifts towards Sault
Ste Marie. If the east does see anything, expect light rainfall.
This shortwave is expected to phase with the Clipper system either
over Lake Superior or northern Ontario. As it does a dry secondary
cold front is expected to move over the area Wednesday night and
Thanksgiving Day, bringing with it another round of lake effect snow
showers in the northwest wind lake effect belts (although some rain
out in the east early on is not out of the realm of possibility).
Once we get past Thanksgiving, model guidance begins to diverge,
with the Canadian and Euro ending lake effect snow around Friday,
whereas the GFS has it continuing until the end of the extended
period; it will depend on whether a sfc high pressure from the
Canadian Prairies moves over us or not before weakening.

A 1-2hr period of MVFR cigs will occur at CMX initially along with
westerly winds gusting to around 25kt. Otherwise, VFR conditions
will prevail at IWD/CMX/SAW into early Sun morning. A sharp cold
front will then sweep across the area during the day on Sun. With
fropa, a brief period of IFR conditions in shsn will occur at IWD
late morning, and at CMX, LIFR conditions in shsn will occur late
morning/early aftn. Just after this fcst period, wnw winds will
likely gust to 45kt at CMX. At SAW, front will not arrive until
after this fcst period, so VFR conditions will continue thru 18z.

Early this evening, w to nw winds will gust up to 20-25kt on Lake
Superior, strongest e half, but winds will diminish to under 20kt as
a high pres ridge quickly moves across the area. However, already by
late tonight, sw winds will be back up gusting to around 25kt across
western Lake Superior as a strong cold front approaches. This strong
cold front will race across Lake Superior on Sun, bringing a wind
shift to nw 40-45kt gales. Across central and eastern Lake Superior,
certainly possible that storm force gusts to 50kt could occur for a
couple of hrs immediately after the front passes due to pres rises
approaching from the w. Winds will slowly diminish from w to e
across Lake Superior Sun night/Mon, falling to blo gale force well
before daybreak Mon w and around mid morning Mon e. High pres ridge
will pass across Lake Superior Mon night, bringing a period of winds
under 20kt. Winds will then quickly increase again on Tue as the
ridge exits to the e and a low pres trof moves out over the Northern
Plains. Expect s to sw winds to gust up to 30kt Tue, perhaps to 35kt
gales e by Tue evening, continuing into Wed. Trof will pass Wed
night. Winds will probably continue to gust to at least 25kt thru
Thanksgiving Day.
