What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this gale warning went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Marquette, MI wrote its last area forecast discussion before this gale warning went out at Jun 20, 3:42 AM EDT, 59 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Jun 20, 3:42 AM EDT, 59 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Marquette MI
342 AM EDT Sun Jun 20 2021

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Sunday)
Issued at 354 PM EDT SAT JUN 19 2021

The dry cold front that moved through the area yesterday is now
draped across the Lower Great Lakes. Behind this front, weak upper-
level ridging is keeping things dry today, although a surprisingly
thick cumulus deck formed early on and has maintained itself through
the day. With the ambient air mass behind the front being so much
cooler, the temperature difference behind the lake breeze is
minimal, but it is enough to stabilize the low levels and erode that
cumulus behind it. The cloud cover will diminish across the area
this evening with the loss of daytime heating.

Tonight, weak surface ridging will keep winds light to nearly calm
and lead to seasonably cool overnight lows mainly in the 40s.
Tomorrow, a more potent mid-level short wave will round the base of
a closed upper low over Hudson Bay. A coupled upper-level jet
structure will develop over the area between Northern Ontario and
western Lake Superior which will lead to a new area of low pressure
developing along a tightening frontal boundary. Rain associated with
this system will spread into the western U.P. by mid-morning.
However, have slowed down the arrival of POPs a bit from previous
forecasts to represent a slight slowing trend in the models. By late
afternoon or early evening, rain will have overspread the entire
U.P. Before the clouds and rain move in, temps should make it into
the low 70s for highs.

.LONG TERM...(Monday through Saturday)
Issued at 342 AM EDT SUN JUN 20 2021

Models continue to produce a consistent signal for a fall-like
synoptic system to move through the Upper Great Lakes Monday. By the
beginning of this long term period, the surface low should be east
of Lake Superior. This puts the region under strong CAA,
northwesterly flow and strong pressure rises of 4-10 mb per 6 hours.
The results will be windy conditions, particularly in the eastern UP
and near Lake Superior, where 30-40 mph winds are expected. With
this, waves should respond and potentially build to near 11 feet
between Shot Point and Grand Marais, which could cause some minor
lakeshore flooding concerns and obvious small boating concerns.
Precip looks to be largely over by Monday morning, with the
exception being some lingering lake-induced showers over the
northwest lake effect zones. As the low lifts northeastward into
Quebec, the relaxing pressure gradient will slowly bring winds down
across the region. The previously mentioned CAA will usher in a
period where 850mb temps could drop to near 0C. This will translate
to well below normal highs on Monday and lows Monday night.
Expecting daytime highs to plateau in the 50s and lows in the 40s by
the lakeshores and 30s inland. Some areas could dip into the low
30s; coupled with low winds, some patchy frost could develop in
areas if cloud cover holds off.

Broad troughing is expected to linger over the region Tuesday.
Within this northwest flow aloft, a shortwave rotating around its
base is expected to swing through the region. Steep low level lapse
rates, combined with this shortwave forcing and moisture advection
could kick off some showers and maybe a rumble of thunder if the cap
can be overcome. WAA through the day will help temps rebound from
the chillier overnight period. Expecting temps in the 60s by the
lakeshores and 70s inland.

For the remainder of the week, continued WAA will keep temps rising
into the 70s Wednesday and upper 70s to low 80s Thursday. Lows look
to be in the 50s to near 60F. The next shot of rain and
thunderstorms looks to be Thursday, with the progression of another
frontal passage through the region. There could be another shot of
rain on Saturday, but there are mixed signals among the
deterministic guidance suite. Ensembles suggest a return to cooler
than normal conditions this weekend that persists into the middle of
next week.
&&

.AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Sunday night)
Issued at 126 AM EDT SUN JUN 20 2021

VFR conditions along with light winds are expected the rest of
tonight. Mid-level clouds spread across the area from west to east
Sunday morning along with increasing chances for showers. As showers
increase in intensity and low level moisture increases expect
CIGs/VIS to fall to IFR from west to east during the afternoon and
into the evening. LIFR conditions could develop late Sunday evening.
&&

.MARINE...(For the 4 PM Lake Superior forecast issuance)
Issued at 354 PM EDT SAT JUN 19 2021

Light winds are expected across the lake tonight and Sunday. Sunday
night, an area of low pressure will develop and strengthen over Lake
Superior. Unseasonably cold air wrapping around the low late Sunday
night through the day Monday will lead to strong NW winds. Models
have had a consistent signal for a several-hour period of gales
Monday morning over the north-central and eastern portions of Lake
Superior. Therefore, have issued a Gale Watch with this forecast
package. Could see a brief period of NW winds up to 40 kts Monday
morning. Winds will quickly diminish Monday night to 15 kts or less
and remain that way through at least next Thursday.
