726 AM EDT Sun Apr 18 2021
.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 328 AM EDT SUN APR 18 2021
Quiet night with some subtle aurora on the horizon. A shrtwv is
moving across Upper Michigan, and aside from a few passing clouds
not really seeing any effects. With clear and calm conditions across
the CWA, temperatures have fallen generally into the 20s, with some
low 30s across the Keweenaw and out east. Temperatures should
continue to fall slowly through the rest of the night with
radiational cooling continuing.
Today, Upper Michigan remains in the doldrums of upper-level flow as
the first half of the day remains fairly quiet. A cold front
currently making its way through Manitoba this morning is progged to
move through the UP later tonight, but weak WAA ahead of this system
could bring some mid- to upper-level clouds into the region by this
afternoon. Model soundings suggest rather deep mixing today, with
RHs falling well into the 20 percent range; however, little gradient
flow will keep winds to around 10, maybe 15 mph at best through the
afternoon. With 850mb temps near 2C, temps should be in the mid to
upper 50s, with a few locations reaching the low 60s around the
Baraga Plains and wern interior of the UP. Expect a lake breeze to
develop as well this aftn with little gradient flow and ample
differential heating.
Tonight, a potent cold front will move across Upper Michigan,
bringing some light pcpn accums and cooler temperatures. Models
suggest this front will reach IWD around 00Z tonight, or perhaps a
little after...but given antecedent dry conditions, pcpn should take
a couple more hours to begin. Pressure rises along the frontal axis
combined with CAA should allow for a breezy evening, with some
stronger winds along the lakeshore. As the CAA continues, there
should be a changeover to snow sometime in the night, with a brief
period of fzdz possible as saturation decreases. Model soundings
suggest inversion temperatures to fall to around -11C, which should
bring some lake-enhancement across the west half. Snow amounts by
Wednesday morning won't be too impressive, remaining under an inch
and really just across the far west, Keweenaw, and higher terrain
across the Michigamme Highlands and Huron Mtns.
.LONG TERM...(Monday through Saturday)
Issued at 359 AM EDT SUN APR 18 2021
Split flow energy will continue across North America for the next
several days. A northern stream of jet energy will continue to be
semi-stationary due to a persistent upper level ridge positioned
along the west coast, stretching upward to Alaska. Several shortwave
disturbances will be riding along the upper level ridge via
northwest flow aloft to the southeast toward the Great Lakes between
Monday and Thursday. This upper level ridge will begin to dissipate
slightly and shear off from the main wave by the middle of the week,
propagating over the Canadian Provinces toward the northern Great
Lakes by Thursday. This will bring a brief window of warmer
temperatures. An additional shortwave will quickly arrive behind
this small ridge by next weekend bringing another quick shot of
precipitation and another push of colder air. The main wave creating
the upper level ridge over the west coast will propagate over the
Central CONUS by the end of next weekend into the early portion of
next week, bringing warmer temperatures toward the Great Lakes.
Overall, several impulses of cold air will accompany the shortwave
disturbances throughout the next 7-10 days, keeping temperatures
below average overall, despite a couple periods where warmer
temperatures will be present in that same period of time.
A longwave trof axis will be positioned over the Great Lakes by
Monday morning as an attendant upper level Low will be located near
the Hudson Bay Region. The cold front will have passed through most
of Upper Michigan by Monday morning, causing a dramatic shift in
temperatures for daytime highs throughout the day in comparison to
Sunday on the order of 20 to 25 degrees cooler in some locations.
Lingering snow showers will continue with lake enhanced and possible
lake effect snow showers. 850mb temperatures will adiabatically cool
to readings between -8C to -12C as the colder air is advected into
the region from the mid-levels of the atmosphere. As this
continental polar air mass advects further across Upper Michigan,
expect the dry air and subsidence to dissipate any lingering snow
showers. Areas furthest in the east of Upper Michigan will likely
see the last window of precipitation Monday evening. Mostly cloudy
skies for Monday will keep temperatures cold, not getting out of the
30s for most areas, with the exception of south central Upper
Michigan seeing readings close to 40 degrees, to potentially the
lower 40s.
An additional trof axis will be positively oriented further upstream
over the Pacific Northwest back to the upper level Low on Monday. As
the first lobe of energy from the departing shortwave on Monday
exits the area, the energy from the developing wave and trof axis
over the Pacific Northwest will slowly amplify and propagate to the
east by Tuesday. This energy looks to develop into another weather
system over the Central Plains to impact the southern Lower Michigan
Peninsula. At this time, it is likely to stay far south of our
forecast region and not impact the area. An inverted surface trof is
likely to form in response to this approaching upper level trof over
the Lower Peninsula, where a weak mesolow may form over the open
waters of Lake Superior due to the shortwave energy aloft being
close in proximity to the area. The weather features will assist
with keeping the colder air over the region for Tuesday as the wave
advects another push of colder air over Upper Michigan. This colder
push of air will advect over Lake Superior, creating some weak
instability over the water. Surface convergence looks marginal at
this point adjacent to the lakeshores of Lake Superior, but it isn't
out of the question to see a few snow showers over the nw and n wind
snow belts along Marquette and Alger County Tuesday/Wednesday.
Additional area of focus would be the same wind snow belts over the
western forecast zones of Gogebic and Ontonagon County Tuesday night
into early Wednesday for light snow flurries to occur. Confidence is
low in this solution occurring over a widespread area due to dry air
being present between 850mb and the surface.
As mentioned previously above, upper level ridging will advance to
the east off the main large amplitude upper level wave over the
northern CONUS and Canadian Provinces of North America. This
sheared wave will bring warmer surface temperatures back to the
region of the Great Lakes for Thursday and Friday, but it will be
short-lived. The next weather system to impact the region is
expected to bring precipitation to the area starting Friday night
into Saturday night. The GFS is the most aggressive with regard to
timing, bringing the chance of precipitation on Friday night,
whereas the Canadian and Euro Model are slower by an additional 12-
24 hours. This shows that model agreement and confidence in a
deterministic signal are low at this time.
After the weather system for next weekend exits the area, long range
guidance is trending toward another brief warmup to start the last
week of April with above average temperatures before another spring
weather system could bring rain/snow to the area once again, with
cooler temperatures to round out the month of April.
