Key Messages:
- Quick Snow Event late tonight, and through Tuesday afternoon/early
evening. Snowfall amounts will generally be 1-3" in MN and 3-5" in
Wisconsin.
- Very Cold Wind Chill values develop Tuesday night.
- Very Cold Wind Chill balues are also possible this weekend.
The snowfall event that produced over a foot of snow in parts of
central Minnesota has moved northeast across Lake Superior this
afternoon. In the wave of this system, strong westerly winds, and
the added few inches of snowfall, caused significant blowing snow
across portions of west central, and central Minnesota. The worst
conditions were felt in Douglas County where local web-cams and
surface visibility from ASOS/AWOS/MnDOT, indicated several hours of
1/2SM to 1SM in blowing snow. Even some snow showers developed in
the wave of this system due to a large column of saturated ice
crystals in the dendritic zone. As of 2 PM, most of the significant
blowing snow has ended with occasional snow flurries and drifting
snow where the Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 3 PM.
The next system will be similar to last nights, but the strength of
the warm air advection is not as strong and it will quickly exit
Minnesota, and western Wisconsin by early evening. Earlier
discussion on the possibility of freezing precipitation is still
evident across far south central, southeast Minnesota, and over west
central Wisconsin. However, the amount of QPF, plus the lack of
strong lift where there could be periods of freezing drizzle, is
much less. Therefore, a couple of hours of very light freezing
drizzle is possible as the system departs. Surface ice accumulation
will be very minimal or non-existent.
There is still a strong signal of snow banding based on the latest
HREF - SPT (Snowband Probability Tracker) across central, east
central and southeast Minnesota between 15-18z, and over west
central Wisconsin between 18-00z. As mentioned before, the speed and
strength of this system is less than last nights. Therefore, only
isolated totals could exceed 6+ inches over west central Wi as this
area has the best potential of QPF amounts greater than 0.50".
Elsewhere, and if there is some contribution to the snow banding,
isolated 3-4 inches are possible. Currently, a Winter Weather
Advisory will be posted for portions of southeast Mn, and west-
central Wi as this area has the best potential of exceeding 3-5
inches. I can't rule out additional counties being added once we
have a better handle on the areal extent of the precipitation
banding.
In the wake of this system, temperatures will fall into the single
digits below zero over western/central Minnesota. Wind chill values
will fall well below -25F from areas west of Redwood Falls, to Sauk
Centre and Little Falls by early Wednesday morning.
Wednesday through Sunday. Wednesday will start off with much colder
than temperatures as widespread subzero temps are expected across
Minnesota and single digits across western WI. Despite the light
northwest winds, our lowest wind chills will range between -25F to
-35F across western Minnesota. A Wind Chill Advisory will likely be
needed through mid-morning before temperatures and wind chills begin
to warm. Wednesday should see plenty of sunshine with highs in the
single digits. A weak shortwave disturbance associated with a
surface trough will bring an area of light snow across our forecast
area on Thursday. Model soundings show a deep, saturated DGZ that
will be efficient in producing light snow and minor accumulations
are possible.
For the weekend, it's going to be cold and mostly dry. Another wave
digs through the northern Rockies late week...eventually becoming a
longwave trough that moves toward our region this weekend. This
induces a Colorado Low that has decent agreement among guidance.
However, what the surface low does after is still up in the air due
to a large spread in solutions. 12Z GFS/GEM continue to develop the
low and track it into the lower Great Lakes region. This places us
on the northwestern fringe of the precipitation shield and could
result in accumulating light snow. On the opposite end of the
spectrum, the 12Z ECMWF/UKMET both show a more progressive pattern
and keep the low suppressed and further to the southeast. This would
keep all of the snow out of our forecast area but would result in
much colder temperatures Saturday and Sunday. Given the uncertainty
we stayed with the NBM, but if we fall into the cold/dry cluster,
then we may be looking at sub-zero highs New Years Day (even in the
Twin Cities), with lows Sunday morning going colder than -20F for
much of the area.
Early next week will feature rising heights and a rapid modification
to the airmass, with highs quickly expected to return to the
20s/30s, for the first half of the week anyways. CPC 8 to 14 day and
week 3/4 temperature outlook favor an extended period of below
normal temperatures into January 2022.

Web-cams across west-central, central Minnesota have shown low vsby
across Douglas, Todd and Morrison Counties. These areas will see
IFR/LIFR vsby in -SHSN/BLSN this afternoon. Elsewhere, scattered
SHSN will persist but shouldn't reduce vsby to less than 3SM. Any
MVFR cigs will be transparent due to the lack of moisture in the
clouds. These clouds will dissipate toward sunset. VFR and decreasing
wind speeds overnight, but becoming SE toward sunrise. Between
09-12z, light snow will begin to spread/develop across
southwest/western Mn and move east/northeast across the rest of
central/southern Mn during the mid/late morning. I have trended
faster and lower on the vsby due to the increasing chance of IFR
conditions by the end of the TAF period, with the exception over west
central Wi.
KMSP...
As mentioned before, the cigs are more transparent but enough
moisture to generate some snow showers. This will be the rule this
afternoon with no accumulation. Gusty winds up to 30-34 kts from the
west will continue. Winds will shift to the E/SE by morning, with
light snow developing between 12-15z. IFR conditions are likely by
18Z.
