.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Sunday night)

Three waves were noted from satellite imagery and radar across the
Northern Plains, and Upper Midwest this afternoon. Each of these
waves have produced accumulating snowfall, but the first only
affecting the far northern MPX CWA, with a light dusting as far
south as St Cloud to Princeton and Rush City. The other two waves
will mainly affect areas from Fargo to Duluth with some light snow
or flurries across central Mn through the early evening. Otherwise,
skies will become clear across southern Minnesota with temperatures
dropping into the teens/single digits.
Today's system was very affected by the drier air at low levels of
the atmosphere which led to the limited snowfall south of I-94. The
next system that will begin to affect southwest/west central
Minnesota Sunday afternoon will have better synoptic scale lift.
This lift will translate to better saturation at the low levels and
a longer duration of precipitation.
First, a strong influx of warmer air will commence Sunday morning
across the Dakotas. The placement of the 850/700MB low suggest a
rapid transition from snow to light precipitation in the form of
freezing drizzle, or freezing rain which is dependent on the level
of saturation, depth of the warm layer aloft, and lift in the non-
existent ice crystal zone across parts of southern Minnesota, and
into west central Wisconsin (Dry-slot). This has been talked about
recently in our discussions whether our atmosphere loses ice
crystals and lift with only supercooled water droplets present.
Thus, a better chance of freezing precipitation (freezing
rain/freezing drizzle) vs. frozen (Snow). Even though there is a
high probability of freezing rain/drizzle Sunday evening/night
across the far southern 1/4 of Mn, and parts of west central
Wisconsin, the amount of QPF should limit ice accumulations to less
than 0.05".
Secondly, the areas that aren't going to see a dry slot affect them
across central, east central Mn and into west-central Wisconsin,
will see periods of snow. How much snow is dependent on mesoscale
processes that could be present Sunday evening as this system
rapidly develops and moves across Minnesota. Snowfall ratios will be
one factor to watch, while others are the amount of QPF and snow
banding effects. The dendritic zone isn't quite deep due to the
stronger influx of warmer air at low levels. In addition, strong
winds will lead to snow crystal breaking up which affects the
snowfall ratio. Still, the probability of banding based on some a
experimental snowband probability tracker (SPT) that does support
banding across central Mn, and into west central Wisconsin. Thus, I
have expanded the watch to include counties in west central
Wisconsin.
Once this system moves off to the northeast, residual moisture
wrapping around the storm system early Monday, could lead to some
additional accumulations across the far northeast MPX CWA.
.LONG TERM...(Monday through Friday)

- Tuesday evening into Wednesday - Another plowable expected, with
much colder air to follow.
An active pattern will continue with another system affecting the
area on Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday morning. A trough will move
out of the Rockies and into the Plains. Guidance appears to have
backed off some on the strength of this system but widespread
snowfall still looks likely. Model QPFs range between 0.25" to 0.5",
which would roughly translate to a 3 to 6" of snow. Some models
suggest banding may occur within the broad area of lighter
precipitation. Banding is difficult to pinpoint several days out due
to the mesoscale origin, but probabilistic messaging highlighting
the potential for an area of localized, heavier snowfall amounts
should help to address where the uncertainties are within guidance.
Beyond Tuesday night, the active storm track takes a break for our
forecast area with much colder air moving into the region as the
system departs. The first surge of Arctic air will bring us our
first widespread sub-zero lows of the season from Tuesday night into
next weekend, with some sub-zero highs even possible out in western
MN Wednesday and Thursday, where some wind chill headlines may
eventually be needed. The 12Z GFS and Canadian try to develop
another storm system for New Year's day, but there is too much
uncertainty this far out in guidance to include anything more than a
mention at this time.

AOA 6kft. Mid level clouds will decrease most locations overnight,
then increase ahead of the arrival of snow Sunday afternoon. Snow
will move into western MN mid to late afternoon, spreading east
toward WI Sunday evening. FZDZ is likely to mix with the snow late
evening and overnight at RWF-MSP-RNH and south. Winds will shift
east and strengthen Sunday afternoon.
