Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mobile AL 1254 PM CDT Tue Oct 26 2021 .NEAR TERM /Now Through Wednesday/...A longwave trof amplifies then takes on a negative tilt while progressing across the Plains during the period. An associated surface low located lee of the Rockies over the central Plains progresses to the Oklahoma/Arkansas border by Wednesday afternoon. A old frontal boundary, remnants of a cold front which moved through the region on Monday, is currently located across the northeastern Gulf then across to near the mouth of the Sabine River valley. As the surface low approaches, the frontal boundary lifts northward as a warm front, though is delayed lifting into extreme southwest Alabama/extreme southeast Mississippi until late Wednesday afternoon, with a pronounced dewpoint gradient over the remainder of the area. A weak southerly 850 mb flow is established over the forecast area early Wednesday morning which then strengthens to 20 to 45 knots Wednesday afternoon, with the strongest flow over the western portion of the area. Deep layer moisture increases significantly meanwhile as well, with precipitable water values climbing to 2.0-2.2 inches over extreme southwest Alabama and southeast Mississippi, tapering to values of 1.0-1.5 inches over a portion of south central Alabama. Am expecting dry conditions to continue over the area through tonight, and even into Wednesday morning, after which the strengthening southerly flow north of the slowly advancing warm front sets up strengthening isentropic lift with mainly likely pops expected over southeast Mississippi and extreme southwest Alabama. Rain chances taper off to dry conditions over the far eastern portion of the area. The position of the warm front will delay the potential for surface based convection, and severe storm development, over nearly the entire area all the way through Wednesday afternoon, with the exception being coastal Mobile county Alabama and possibly Stone and George counties Mississippi. Within this small portion, SBCAPE values of 1000 J/kg may be quickly realized with the advance of the warm front, which along with plenty of shear will support supercell convection. This looks to be delayed until near 6 pm, just at the tail end of the forecast period, which is when a potential for strong to severe convection is possible, although this will mainly follow beginning early Wednesday evening.
