Forecast for the remainder of tonight is on track aside from a few
tweaks to cloud/temperature trends.

Main focus is on the quick hitting system for Sunday evening.
Overall the incoming 00z guidance confirms the ongoing forecast.
Strong warm advection will spread over the region after sunset.
The biggest headache is precip type. Onset will likely be a
sleet/snow mixture given thermo profiles and initial wet bulbing
effects.

The quality of the warm nose does differ by model type. The NAM
(notoriously aggressive with warm advection) does not disappoint
delivering a stout warm layer aloft. The EPS and GEFS are a bit
more reserved, but still support a change a precip type albeit
more gradually. Add in loss of cloud ice with time and a situation
of precipitation type equals yes in definitely in play.

Bottom line, this is a quick hitter. Onset will likely be a
sleet/snow mixture given thermo profiles and initial wet bulbing
effects. As persistent warm advection continues, a change in
precip type from snow to rain is expected from southwest to
northeast as the evening progresses. A narrow area of freezing
rain is possible as cloud ice becomes questionable and the
transition zone moves northeastward with time, adding to the
forecast messiness.

Model QPF generally looks to be in the 0.2 to 0.4 inch range (give
or take), with initial 10:1 snow ratios decreasing as warm
advection wins out. Ongoing forecast of up to a slushy inch of
snow north of I-94 looks good. Can't rule out a few areas in the
1-2 inch range in our far north (Dells to Fond du Lac). Also
cannot rule out a thin glaze as well. Areas along/south of I-94
look to switch to rain in a rather orderly fashion so any initial
light accumulations will fall prey to rain.

Be prepared for slick spots on area roadways Sunday evening. Loss
of insolation and road temps not far from freezing will be
something to watch. The typical concern for bridges and overpasses
are in play as well.

Tonight and Sunday:

A shortwave trough over the Dakotas is expected to move across nrn
WI and the nrn Great Lakes tnt. The srn periphery of the mid
level cloud deck will move ewd across the nrn portion of the CWA,
mainly north of Madison and Milwaukee. Any pcpn will remain to
the north. Skies will clear afterward while the srn portion of a
broad sfc ridge takes hold over the wrn Great Lakes into early Sun
afternoon. Low temps tnt will fall into the 20s and possibly some
upper teens well inland. Ely flow will then develop with lake
effect clouds expected toward east central WI for late Sun AM into
the early afternoon. Meanwhile, mid to high clouds will increase
Sun afternoon ahead of cyclogenesis over the central Great Plains.

Sunday night through Saturday:

Lee side cyclogenesis will develop and move out into the central
Great Plains on Sun with the low reaching wrn Lake Superior by
early Mon afternoon. The associated shortwave trough will take a
similar track, thus the upper dynamics will be most focused to the
west and north. However, a burst of low to mid level warm, moist
advection and frontogenesis will shift newd through srn WI Sun nt.
The forecast continues to not change much with a burst of fairly
strong lift and mixed pcpn. Expecting anywhere from 1-4 hours of
snow followed by drizzle or freezing drizzle, however, far srn WI
and far se WI could see mostly rain versus snow given sfc temps
remaining above freezing there. North of Madison is where the best
chances for an inch or more of snow and light ice accum is
possible. A Winter Wx Advisory may eventually be needed for that
area.

Another similar setup will then occur for Tue-Tue nt with varying
amounts of qpf possible, along with mixed pcpn to deal with. There
appears to be a trend toward more snow at this time especially
north and west of the MKE metro area, but confidence is still low
on temp profiles. Afterward, a cooling trend is expected but with
uncertainty on how much cooling will occur. Another low pressure
area within wswly flow aloft may then affect srn WI for next
weekend.

Main forecast concern is the wintry mix expected Sunday evening
into early Monday morning. Mid/high level clouds will be on the
increase during the day Sunday, with quickly lowering bases after
sunset. Mix of precipitation will move from southwest to northeast
in a rather quick/orderly fashion. Onset of sleet/snow will give
way to mainly rain for locations along/south of I-94. Wintry mix
will be more persistent north of I-94 through the evening before
eventually changing to rain. Ceilings and visibility will lower
through MVFR during the evening, down to IFR during the early
morning hours on Monday. Winds will also become gusty during the
evening onward.

Only light to modest northerly winds are expected tonight into
Sunday afternoon as a surface ridge of 30.2 inches builds into the
western Great Lakes. Low pressure of 29.4 inches will then move
from Nebraska to western Lake Superior from Sunday afternoon to
Monday afternoon. Breezy east to southeast winds will develop
Sunday evening over Lake Michigan, veering to southerly Monday
morning, then veering westerly and remaining brisk for Monday
afternoon and evening. Wind gusts will approach gale force Sunday
night. Winds will diminish some for late Monday night and Tuesday
morning but become breezy again out of the southeast for later
Tuesday afternoon and night, as another low pressure area
approaches the western Great Lakes.

A Small Craft Advisory will likely be needed for Sun nt-Mon AM
from Sheboygan to Winthrop Harbor due to breezy sely winds and
waves building to 6 to 9 feet.
