National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City NC
236 PM EDT Tue Apr 20 2021
.SYNOPSIS...
A strong cold front will approach from the west tonight and
sweep through the region late Wednesday. High pressure will
build in from the west Thursday and Friday. Low pressure will
impact the region later Saturday into Sunday, followed by high
pressure early next week.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 235 PM Tue...High pres wl cont offshore as a strong cold
front approaches from the W. Expect mclr to PC skies most of the
night with some increase in clouds late as moisture begins to
increase ahead of the front. Most areas will remain dry with a
stray shra poss clipping the imd coast late. Mild lows mostly in
the low to mid 50s, with some upr 50s cst.
&&
.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY/...
As of 235 PM Tue...Strong cold front will cross the region late
in the day. Moisture is limited assoc with the front and best
forcing will be N of region but with modest instab will cont
slight chc to chc pops with best chc NE tier. Given strong shear
across region if convection does form some strong to marginally
severe storms would be poss producing gusty winds. SW winds
will become gusty ahead of the front thru mid aftn then shift to
the NW from W to E late in the day as the strong front crosses.
Highs mostly mid to upr 70s, with some lower 70s beaches.
&&
.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 430 AM Tuesday...A strong cold front will push through
the area Wednesday afternoon/evening with much cooler air
behind it and potential for frost Friday morning. A potentially
strong low pressure area and cold front will push through next
weekend.
Wednesday night through Friday...Strong CAA develops behind the
front Wednesday night with high pressure building in from the
west bringing a much cooler and drier airmass. Lows Thursday
morning will drop into the mid 30s inland to mid 40s along the
coast. Frost is of limited concern Thursday morning as NW winds
will keep most areas mixed but sheltered areas may see patchy
frost develop toward daybreak. Temps Thursday will be around
10-15 degrees below normal despite sunny skies with highs
expected in the low to mid 60s. The high will become centered
over the area Thursday night with clear skies and calm winds
allowing for excellent radiational cooling bringing a better
frost potential with lows dropping into the mid 30s inland while
coastal sections will be in the low to mid 40s. The high
migrates offshore Friday with return flow bringing warming temps
with highs expected in the upper 60s to around 70 inland with
coastal sections in the mid 60s.
Saturday through Monday...A robust mid-level shortwave and
attendant sfc low track across the southern states Saturday
then deepens as it tracks through central NC and SE VA Saturday
night. Much better moisture transport will surge into the area
bringing widespread rainfall with guidance showing 1-1.5" QPF
possible. Another high shear/low CAPE scenario expected but
could see a few severe storms with backing winds just ahead of
the sfc low allowing for increasing helicity. Guidance showing
very little to no instability inland, but just enough
instability may reside along the coast for a few strong to
severe storms to develop with damaging winds or an isolated
tornado possible. Second half of the weekend into early next
week should be dry with subsident flow behind departing system.
&&
.AVIATION /18Z TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Short Term /through Tomorrow Morning/... As of 130 PM
Tuesday...VFR flight cats prevail through the period. Upper
level cirrus continues to invade the region from the SW.
Predominantly SEerly winds at the SFC 5 to 10 kts will last
throughout the day becoming more Serly into tonight.
Temperatures overnight should cool enough to briefly reach
saturation in the lowest levels, however winds are forecast to
remain JUST strong enough to keep the boundary layer mixed, so
confidence was very low in any fog development. However, it is
worth mentioning here that should the winds fall below 3/4 kts,
patchy fog could develop tomorrow morning between the hours of 9
and 12Z, with coastal terminals showing the best chance.
Tomorrow, SWerly winds build to around 10kts by morning with
gusts up to 15kts developing just before the afternoon. Cold
front pushes through late afternoon Wed, increasing the chances
of showers later in the day.
Long Term /Wednesday afternoon through Saturday/...
As of 530 AM Tuesday...A system with limited moisture will move
across rtes Wednesday aftn and could see brief periods of sub-
VFR conditions develop. Tightening gradients will bring SW wind
gusts around 20-30 kt ahead of the front becoming NW after fropa
late Wednesday afternoon and early evening. Pred VFR conditions
expected Wednesday night into Saturday morning. A strengthening
low pressure center will impact the area later Saturday and
Saturday night with sub-VFR conditions likely.
&&
.MARINE...
Short Term /through Wed/...
As of 235 PM Tue...Good boating conditions will cont tonight
with winds mainly S at 5 to 15 kt and seas 2 to 3 feet. Winds
become SW and increase into Wed aftn with speeds reaching 15 to
25 kts as a strong cold front approaches. The front will cross
later Wed aftn into the evening with winds shifting to NW and
remaining strong at 20 to 30 kt. Seas will build to 4 to 6 feet
late Wed. Will issue SCA for all wtrs beginning late Wed/Wed
evening and cont thru late Wed night to mid day Thu.
Long Term /Wednesday Night through Saturday/...
As of 530 AM Tuesday...A strong cold front will push offshore
early Wednesday evening. SCA conditions expected all wtrs most
of Wed night with NW winds 20-30 kt and seas 4-7 ft. Better
boating conditions return Thursday through Friday. A strong low
pressure system will approach the area Saturday with
deteriorating conditions across the waters late Saturday and
Saturday night.
&&
.FIRE WEATHER...
As of 235 PM Tue...Per coord with NCFS will issue a Fire Danger
Statement for the region Wed as SW winds become gusty then shift
to the NW late as cold front crosses. Although humidities are
not overly dry many areas have seen little rain past few weeks
and fine fuels are rather dry. There may be an even greater
threat of fire spread on Thursday as humidities drop into the
20 to 30 percent range and W winds gust to around 20 kt.
