Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City NC 144 AM EDT Wed Mar 31 2021 .SYNOPSIS... High pressure will continue to slide offshore tonight. The next strong cold front approaches from the west Wednesday and cross the area early Thursday. Arctic high pressure builds in from the northwest late in the week. && .NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/... As of 1005 PM Tuesday...Skies remain clear across much of the CWA at late evening, except for some mid clouds near the coast. Deeper moisture will slowly works its way into the area from the south overnight and several of the high resolution models, including the HRRR, 3km NAM and NSSL WRF shows some showers moving in off the water early in the morning. To account for this, did slightly raise PoPs to chance before daybreak and show cloud cover increasing overnight. No changes to the forecast temperatures which will be in the upper 50s to lower 60s area- wide. && .SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM THURSDAY/... As of 400 PM Tue...Surface high pressure and the ridge aloft will move further offshore tomorrow. Back to the west, an upper trough will sharpen significantly over the central CONUS, opening up the Gulf of Mexico for both warm air and moisture advection into the Deep South. As frontogenesis occurs a wave of low pressure will move up the front and track along the Appalachians. Couple this with return flow from the surface high off of the Atlantic and eastern NC will see temperatures and moisture increase throughout the day. Chances for scattered showers and possibly a thunderstorm will increase from southwest to northeast ahead of the main front which will come through much later Wednesday evening and into early Thursday morning. Expect highs on Wednesday afternoon to approach and possible touch 80 degrees for the inland counties with low to mid 70s in coastal areas. Upper 60s for the OBX. && .LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/... As of 250 AM Tue... Wednesday and Wed night...Deep troughing and its associated strong cold front will approach the area Wed and cross late Wed night and early Thu. Area will be in warm sector Wed with grad increasing moisture. Forcing weak Wed and mainly late so lowered morn pops to slight chc/chc then increase pops inland to likely later in the day. Highs inland 75 to 80 with beaches upr 60s to low 70s. Strong forcing will cross Wed night with widespread shra and sct tsra expected ahead of the front. Cont categorical pops all areas. NAM shows decent instab over the region and when combined with the strong shear would result in severe tsra potential. GFS shows much less instab with limited severe threat...will cont with sct tsra mention.
