Low pressure moving northeast along a stalled front offshore
will continue wet weather today. High pressure will then build
in from the west later tonight through Sunday. A weak cold
front will cross the area Monday followed by high pressure
through mid week.

As of 615 AM Fri...No changes planned with periods of rain cont
much of the day. Flash Flood Watch likely marginal espcly well
inland but will let it cont with rain expected much of the day
and ground saturated.
Prev disc...Another very wet day on tap as front remains
stalled offshore with short wave approaching from the W. Plume
of deep moisture conts over the region this morn and will begin
to shift E later today. Will cont categorical pops into the aftn
with some locally mod to heavy rain expected. Best threat for
flooding rains will be closer to cst, however with the ground
saturated and rivers and streams at or above bankfull will cont

well inland. Clouds...rain and NE flow will lead to minimal temp
rise today with highs upr 30s/around 40 well inland to low/mid

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 AM SATURDAY/...
As of 230 AM Fri...Offshore front and assoc deeper moisture will
finally slide well offshore overnight as decent short wave
crosses. Rain will taper off and end thru the evening from W to
E with dry weather all areas after midnight. Appears rain will
end before cools enuf for any snow to mix in. Clouds shld sct
out from W to E late with lows dropping into the upr 20s/around
30 inland to lower to mid 30s beaches. Will have to monitor
threat of some black ice inland as remaining moisture on roads
may freeze with sub freezing temps expected. CAA on backside of
departing low/front will produce breezy NNW winds for the
beaches espcly N of Cape Lookout.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 325 AM Fri...Drier conditions expected through the
weekend with below normal temperatures. Next weather maker will
be early next week as another front crosses the area. Dry and
warm conditions set up for the remainder of the period.
Saturday and Sunday...Cool high pressure will be in control for
the weekend with below average temperatures expected. Highs in
the 40s with mainly clear skies, although with brisk northerly
winds over OBX temperatures there may not rise out of the 30s.
Saturday night looks like a good candidate for radiational
cooling and pushed forecast lows to the cooler side, favoring
temperatures in the low to mid 20s inland.
Monday...Shortwave trough will race across the eastern CONUS
Monday, spurring surface cyclogenesis over the Great Lakes and
dragging a cold front across the region Monday into Tuesday
morning. Ahead of this front, a wave of low pressure is expected
to develop and lift along a developing coastal boundary. QPF
amounts expected to be around a quarter to half inch. Some
guidance hinting at meager instability along the coast
suggesting the potential for a rumble of thunder or two here,
but confidence is too low to mention in forecast this morning.
Other issue, with very low confidence, is ptype issues at the
beginning of the event. Forecast temperatures expected to be
right around freezing but steadily rise early Monday as low
pressure migrates along the coast. There is a very brief window
for freezing drizzle or rain before switching over to all rain
as temps rise well into the 50s. Low confidence in this
scenario, coupled with minimal to nil impacts, preclude mention
in the grids.
Tuesday through Thursday...High pressure builds in from the
southwest behind the front, moving overhead and eventually
offshore by Thursday. Above-average temperatures expected
through the period with 925 mb temperatures rising to around +10
C by midweek. Nudged highs a couple degrees upward from the last
update, and a few 70s are not out of the question.

As of 615 AM Fri...High confidence in pred IFR thru 00Z with
cont periods of rain and low stratus. After 0z rain will end
from W to E and expect clouds to grad lift thru MVFR to VFR and
sct out late evening and overnight. Appears dewpts drop overnight
with CAA limiting threat for any fog.
Long Term /Saturday through Tuesday/...
As of 330 AM Fri...VFR conditions persist through the weekend
before a front crosses early week, bringing the potential for
another brief round of flight restrictions. High pressure
returns late Monday into Tuesday with predominantly VFR
conditions forecast.

15 to 25 kt late today as front and assoc low pres begin to
shift E. NNW winds increase to 20 to 30 kts tonight as CAA
increases on backside of departing low. SCA will cont for the
cstl wtrs thru period and have added the Sounds and Alligator
River to the SCA toward evening and cont overnight. Wave
guidance is running about 1 foot low nrn tier and expect seas
today mostly 5 to 7 ft N and 4 to 6 ft S. As winds increase
tonight could see some 8 to 9 foot seas develop outer central
and nrn wtrs.
Long Term /Sat through Tuesday/...
As of 340 AM Fir...Northwesterly winds at 15-20 kt will persist
through the weekend as front departs the area, briefing surging
Saturday night into Sunday as high pressure builds in from the
west pinching the gradient. This will keep seas at 5-6 feet into
Sunday afternoon; SCAs have been appropriately extended. Next
period of SCA appears to be Monday into Tuesday as next front
approaches and crosses the waters, with SW winds of 20-25 kt
driving seas to 6-8 feet especially for southern and central
waters.

.HYDROLOGY...
As of 230 AM Fri...Many area rivers are already experiencing
minor to moderate flooding following a very wet start to 2021.
An additional 0.5 to 1 inch of rainfall today will further
exacerbate flooding issues, initially across low lying areas
near streams and creeks, which are already running backfull,
then across mainstem rivers, where several days of additional
water level rises are expected. A flash flood watch remains in
effect for the area into the aftn well inland and early evening
for the coast.
