.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front will push through the area today. After another
brief period of high pressure another strong storm system will
move through the region Thursday into Friday. High pressure then
builds over the area this weekend.
&&
.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
As of 955 AM Tue...Last line of showers and tstorms have exited
the OBX region and pushed offshore. Some light showers earlier
further inland have dissipated as well. Forecast for the rest of
today remains on track.
Prev disc...Low continues its journey northeast, although the
cold front will lag behind and not cross until later tonight.
This poses a challenge for the temperature forecast, as 850mb
temps will be falling faster over the coastal plain than over
OBX. Current forecast shows mid to upper 60s east of Highway 17
with only low 60s west, but if CAA further inland is weaker than
expected then forecast could underperform. Worth watching for
future updates.
With CAD broken over the area we should enjoy sunshine again
with cloud cover gradually decreasing through the day as drier
air seeps into the region.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 AM WEDNESDAY/...
As of 410 AM Tue...Weak upper shortwave will pivot across the
mid-Atlantic late, driving the cold front across and ushering in
cooler and much drier air with high pressure builds into the
area. Lows return closer to seasonal norms with temperatures
bottoming out around the freezing mark inland, upper 30s to low
40s along the coast.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 6 AM Tue...High pressure builds in through Wednesday. A
strong frontal system will impact the area Thursday and Friday.
High pressure returns this weekend into early next week.
Wednesday...Stronger CAA arrives with the evening backdoor
front as high pressure building over the Northeast begins to
ridge down the Eastern Seaboard. This ridging will continue to
dominate Wednesday.
Wednesday Night through Friday...A strong shortwave rounding the
base of the broad upper troughing over the eastern US will lift
across the region Thursday through Friday. Developing surface
low pressure associated with this feature will cross the deep
south Wednesday night and Thursday, prompting a warm front to
lift across the area Thursday, potentially overriding the
lingering weak wedge that will still be in place. WAA then
ensues Thursday night and Friday as the wedge breaks down ahead
of an approaching cold front.
The surface low will continue to strengthen as it lifts along or
east of the I- 95 corridor Thursday night and Friday. Eastern
NC will be mostly in the warm sector during this time, though
more recent guidance is taking the low center more over eastern
NC, which would result in the strongest portion of the
southerly LLJ remaining offshore. Still, very strong low level
shear and the potential for thunderstorm organization/severe
weather will exist Thursday into Friday morning as the main line
of prefrontal storms crosses the area. Additionally, sustained
winds could be strong, especially along the coast, and elevated
water levels along the northern shores of area waterways are
possible. Winds are expected to subside and the severe weather
and precip chances will end as the cold front crosses the area
later Friday.
Saturday through Monday...High pressure builds in through the
weekend, passing offshore as the next cold front approaches early
next week. This will bring a more settled period with steadily
moderating temps through Sunday night, with precip chances
returning Monday, but dependent on the timing of the next front.

Short Term /through 12Z Wednesday/...
As of 715 AM Tue...Mixed bag of flight conditions across the
terminals with predominantly MVFR cigs scattering out
occasionally. Brief periods of IFR possible with secondary band
of precip crossing the coastal plain, but otherwise conditions
will improve to VFR around midday. SW winds will gust to 25 kt
at times today, then veering northerly as main cold front comes
through tonight.
Long Term /Wednesday through Saturday/...
As of 6 AM Tue...High pressure ridges in from the north
Wednesday, with moisture overriding this wedge bringing the
potential for reduced ceilings, especially later in the day
Wednesday. The next frontal system impacts the area Thursday and
Friday, bringing the threat for periods of flight restrictions
for both visibility (in showers and thunderstorms) and lower
ceilings. High pressure/VFR conditions return over the weekend.

As of 420 AM Tue...Warm front has lifted across the waters with
S to SW winds at 15-20 kt with frequent gusts to 25-30 kt. Winds
have driven offshore seas to around 8 feet at both Diamond and
30 miles SE New River. SW winds of 20-25 kt will persist across
primarily the central and southern waters through the day as
cold front approaches from the west, veering northerly at around
20 kt as the front passes. Seas will be slow to fall through the
day with 6+ foot waves still expected beyond 10 nm. Only changes
to the SCA were to trim back expiration times based on latest
hi-res guidance.
Short-range guidance continues to advocate for potential sea fog
along the southern coast later this morning with moist air
advecting over cooler ocean waters, but still think stronger
winds will preclude formation and opted to leave out of the
forecast for now.
Long Term /Wednesday through Saturday/...
As of 6 AM Tue...High pressure ridging inland continues
moderate to breezy winds Wednesday and Wednesday night. Then, a
developing low over the Deep South on Thursday will prompt winds
to become southerly, with a strong LLJ bringing gusty to strong
winds Thursday night into Friday as the low passes just inland,
with Gales possible when winds are the strongest Friday
morning. High pressure building in brings CAA/NW flow returning
Saturday.
Seas linger around 3-6 ft Wednesday and Wednesday night. Seas
begin to increase again Thursday as southerly windswell quickly
builds, with seas peaking at 8-10+ ft Friday morning before
slowly subsiding through the rest of the weekend.
