No additional updates are needed this evening as the forecast is
well on track. An update was issued late this afternoon/early this
evening for this evening through Saturday morning and is detailed
below.
Please read the discussion from 253 PM PST for information regarding
expected low elevation snowfall for Sunday into Monday.
Also, if you're interested in the forecast beyond then and,
especially if you are in the Mount Shasta area, take note of the
"Long Term" section. There is growing confidence in at least one
major winter storm affecting the Mount Shasta area next week, the
first of which is expected Tuesday into Wednesday. That storm
appears likely to drop 12 to 18 inches of snow on the town of Mount
Shasta City. Ensembles suggest more storm activity for Mount Shasta
after that through the end of the month, but the details are less
certain in terms of timing and snow levels. Definitely stay tuned,
as further winter weather headline products are expected in the

UPDATE...Updated the aviation discussion.
AVIATION...For the 23/00Z TAFs...Light showers and snow showers
will gradually diminish in coverage tonight into early Saturday
morning, with a wide variety of conditions from LIFR to VFR. VFR
will be the most common condition (for much of northern California
and east of the Cascades). But, precipitation will linger longest,
cigs will be lowest, and mountain obscuration predominant near north
facing slopes. This includes the Umpqua Divide and Siskiyou
Mountains. Also, a mix of LIFR ceilings and visibilities is expected
to fill the valleys west of the Cascades after 06Z through most of
Saturday morning. Conditions will improve to VFR across the
area later Saturday morning into Saturday afternoon. -DW
MARINE...Updated 830 PM PST Friday, 22 Jan 2021...A few light
showers will linger into Saturday morning. Moderate north winds and
multiple swell trains will result in steep to very steep seas into
Saturday morning, highest south of Port Orford. A brief break in the
weather is expected later Saturday into Saturday night. Winds then
increase and could approach gales Sunday as a strong cold front
moves through the waters. This will also result in a building
northwest swell and secondary long period west-northwest swell late
Saturday night into Sunday night. High and steep seas are expected

UPDATE...
Updates to the forecast for this evening through Saturday morning
have been made and sent. Precipitation probabilities were
adjusted mostly upward, precipitation amounts for both rain and
snow have been updated, as well as snow levels and expected sky
cover. These updates have made it to the text products and to the
point-and-click forecasts as of the send time on this product.
DISCUSSION...
Wrap around moisture this afternoon and evening has brought some
reasonably healthy precipitation amounts to some areas,
particularly Jackson, Josephine, and Siskiyou counties. Here at
the Medford Airport we're up to 0.19" and one of our spotters just
outside of the town of O'Brien reported 0.23" as of 330pm PST.
We've also seen 0.25" in Eagle Point and a few amounts of a
quarter to a half inch in other parts of Josephine County and
Curry County. While precipitation will gradually wind down this
evening into the early morning, we'll still have some threat of
light precipitation going into the morning in some parts of the
area. Snow accumulations are expected to be mainly above 3kft,
though some skiffs are possible down to as low as about 2kft in
isolated areas.
All in all, this precipitation event is much lesser in terms of
expected impact to the one expected Sunday into Monday. Please
read on further, below, in the previous discussion for further
information on the Sunday-Monday snowfall potential across the

PREV DISCUSSION... /Issued 253 PM PST Fri Jan 22 2021/
SHORT TERM...With an upper level disturbance shifting southward
along the southern Oregon and northern California coast through
this evening, showers will continue across the area. Shower
activity has been most concentrated west of the Cascades in
Jackson and Josephine Counties this afternoon with isolated to
scattered light showers elsewhere. This pattern will continue
this evening with showers gradually decreasing tonight into early
Saturday. A shortwave upper level ridge will build into place on
Saturday bring dry weather to the area. Then models remain on
track showing a cold front move into the area Sunday and bringing
lower elevation snow to the area.
For Sunday, a front moving into the area combined with cold air
aloft will likely bring lower elevation snow to the area. Models
show good agreement with snow levels starting out around 1000 to
2000 feet as this front brings precipitation into western portions
of the area Sunday morning. Precipitation will spread east of the
Cascades in the late afternoon and evening. Model indicate snow
levels will rise during the early and mid afternoon to 2000 to
2500 feet, gradually lowering again Sunday evening. Confidence is
moderate to high that we will see light to moderate accumulations
on roadways above 2000 feet areas west of the Cascades and down
to 1500 feet in Douglas County and in the southern Rogue Valley
near Ashland where upslope effects may enhance precipitation under
west-northwest flow. Across lower western valley floors there is
a potential for periods of light snow or rain snow mix on Sunday,
especially Sunday morning and again late Sunday evening and
night.
Two factors may influence how much snow lower valleys receive on
Sunday, including the timing of the system and how cold
conditions are before the system arrives. Precipitation is
currently forecast to spread into the coast, Umpqua during the
early morning on Sunday then into Josephine, Jackson and western
Siskiyou in the mid to late morning with peak precipitation
occuring in the late morning and early afternoon. This timing
will have an impact on snow levels and a slightly slower track
(later arrival) with this front may result in less snow across
lower valley floors. Confidence is generally high that
accumulating snow of around 1 to 4 inches of snow is likely across
western valleys/hills with elevations above 2000 feet. These
locations may see rain mix with snow at times in the afternoon but
otherwise are expected to see snow. Areas along and just north of
Umpqua Divide and in the southern Rogue Valley are expected to
see accumulating snow down to 1500 feet due to upslope effects.
This pattern is expected to bring snow impacts to Interstate 5
along the lower passes near Stage and Canyon Mountain passes and
near the Ashland area and vicinity. Elsewhere, for western
valleys below 1500 feet elevation, expect period of light snow or
a rain snow mix down to around 1000 feet elevation (and possibly
as low as 500 feet) at times. One concern is that some of the
high resolutions models indicate a chance for heavier snow of 3 to
5 inches near the Ashland area in surrounding hills and possibly
near Canyon Mountain pass. This will be something to monitor with
upcoming model runs.
Across the mountains from the Cascades west, expect snow
accumulations of around 3 to 6 inches with locally higher
amounts. Widespread light snow of 1 to 3 inches is expected east
of the Cascades in Oregon and in eastern/central Siskiyou and
Modoc Counties in northern California.
Sunday night into early Monday, the front will shift eastward
with continued snow along and ahead of the front in Lake and
Modoc Counties. Behind the front, models support lingering
showers, with shower activity focused along the coast and over the
mountains from the Cascades west as an upper trough moves inland.
Snow levels will lower down to west side valley floors Sunday
night and Monday morning. However, confidence is low in how much
precipitation may fall during this time.
LONG TERM...Monday morning until Saturday morning
The start of the extended period will start off unsettled with
plenty of vorticity along the Oregon coastline. This unstable air
will bring a 20 to 40 percent chance for rain and snow above 1000
feet. With such low snow levels, the chance for snow along the
valley floors still remains. However, the amount of precipitation
in the forecast from 12z Monday until 12z Tuesday only amounts to a
few hundreths. Therefore, impacts will be minimal with this
lingering low level snow from the Sunday system.
Our attention then turns to Tuesday night into Wednesday when
ensembles predict a strong low building off the coast of Oregon. NBM
probabilities of exceedance are on the higher side near Mt Shasta
City Tuesday night. Currently, we're looking at a 55% chance for
more than 8 inches of snow near the Mt Shasta City region over 24
hours. With a cold front expected to move through sometime Tuesday
night into Wednesday morning, we're anticipating travel impacts near
Mt Shasta City and along California portions of I-5. With the strong
upslope flow, snow fall rates can easily reach 1 inch an hour during
these types of weather patterns and the strong southerly winds.
To put these southerly winds in perspective, we're expecting 40 to
45 knot 850 mb winds in the Sacramento Valley. These winds for
Tuesday night and Wednesday morning lie in the 97.5 to 99th
percentile of climatology based off of the latest NAEFS forecast. At
this time, it seems more probable than not that this will be a
strong and impactful winter storm for most of Siskiyou County.
After Wednesday, ensembles suggest the low will linger off the coast
of California. The impacts for northern California and Oregon
should be pretty limited by this time with more of the dynamic
lifting energy to our south. We still have a 20 to 30 percent chance
of precipitation on Thursday for most of the area.
Finally, towards the end of the forecast period Friday into
Saturday, the NBM shows a 50 percent chance of precipitation across
southern Oregon and northern California. This is definitely on the
higher side for this far out in the forecast. Ensembles also
suggest that snow levels will be around 3000 feet Friday into
Sunday. It's unclear what impacts will be around for next weekend
given the available data. Stay tuned to the forecast, especially
for what will happen Tuesday night into Wednesday. -Smith
