.DISCUSSION...A weakening cold front will move onshore tonight and
wash out over the area Friday morning. Some cloudiness is moving
into NW sections of the CWA at this time. Surface observations
aren't showing any measurable precipitation in our area yet (as of
2 pm) with the nearest reports of rainfall reaching the ground
near and north of Florence. Lacking moisture, the front isn't
expected to bring much precipitation -- it's more or less a marine
push -- with just some spotty light rain or drizzle from the
Cascades/Siskiyous north and west. Rain amounts will be
negligible, a trace to perhaps up to a few hundredths in favored
terrain areas like the Cascade foothills, the Umpqua Divide and
also the north-facing slopes of the Siskiyous. Patchy drizzle
could occur as far south as the Salmon/Marble Mountains, though
it's even less likely down there. We'll probably wake up to some
cloud cover here in Medford, but that should mostly dissipate by
late morning. Other than some morning clouds, the rest of NorCal
and areas east of the Cascades probably won't notice the front
that much. It'll turn sunny Friday afternoon with only a few
degrees of cooling compared to today across NW sections. Other
areas will have highs similar to today. A strengthening thermal
trough will cause gusty north winds to develop along the coast in
the afternoon with some north-northeast breezes for the
Umpqua/Illinois Valleys.
Saturday through Monday, flat upper ridging will take hold
resulting in a mainly sunny, warm, dry pattern with temperatures
running about 5-10 degrees above normal. Not expecting much day-
to-day change during this time period with highs largely in the
upper 70s to mid 80s west of the Cascades and in the 70s to near
80 over the east side. Temperatures could reach the low 90s in
the lower Klamath River Valley near Happy Camp.
Attention shifts to mid-late next week as guidance continues to
advertise a pattern shift to cooler, windier and wetter weather.
Model clusters and ensembles are steadfast in showing an upper
trough developing near the coast of British Columbia by Tuesday
with an offshore cold front approaching the coast. Rain chances
increase at the coast then, but many areas inland still probably
stay dry. The initial front likely pushes onshore Tuesday night
into Wednesday, but we're still not sure how strong it will be and
how much precipitation will make it inland. Right now, it doesn't
look like an overly wet front. Overall, confidence in the change
to cooler is high, since there should be some progression of the
trough eastward toward the end of next week and the expected
lowering of heights will result in the widespread cool down.
However, there is still plenty of uncertainty in just how the
trough evolves and how much precipitation there will be. With the
latest data suggesting the trough could split with some energy
pulling south and west offshore of California and a general
northwest flow aloft developing late next week, confidence in
precipitation is not as high. There is still plenty of time
between now and then to sort out the details. -Spilde

.AVIATION...30/18Z TAFs...Along the coast and just offshore, MVFR
ceilings re expected mainly north of Cape Blanco into early this
afternoon. However clouds will gradually increase with ceilings
lowering south of Cape Blanco this afternoon, but they should remain
VFR into at least early this evening. Tonight, ceilings will
continue to lower south of Cape Blanco as a front moves into the
area, Guidance indicates ceilings will remain VFR, but there is
concern they could lower to MVFR between 6-8z with marine stratus
expected along and behind the front. Meanwhile ceilings north of
Cape Blanco could hover close to IFR and have indicated that for the
North Bend TAF.
Inland west of the Cascades, the aforementioned front will result in
increasing onshore flow with marine stratus forming in the Coquille
and Umpqua Basin with MVFR ceilings at Roseburg and IFR ceilings
towards the Umpqua Divide and possibly into the Illinois Valley, but
confidence on that is low.
The marine stratus will also slip into the Rogue Valley late
tonight. Ceilings at Medford will remain VFR, but surrounding hills
and mountains will be partly obscured.
East of the Cascades, VFR ceilings will continue through the TAF
period, but watch for partial mountain obscurations west of
Klamath Falls towards the Cascades towards 12z. -Petrucelli

winds will increase tonight as a thermal trough develops and
strengthens behind a cold front. Moderate to strong winds are
expected from tonight into into Saturday morning which will result
in steep wind driven seas that are likely to result in Hazardous
Warning Seas conditions. Northwest swell will also increase some
which will add some to the total sea height. The strongest winds and
steepest seas are expected to be south of Port Orford initially
tonight, then expanding north west of Bandon Friday morning and
lasting into Saturday morning. As a result have upgraded the
Hazardous Seas Watch to a warning which will include the southern
part of marine zone 370. Could not rule out brief gales south of
Gold beach and between 10 and 30 nm from shore during the same time
period, but confidence was not high enough to issue a Gale Warning.
Winds and seas will gradually diminish late Saturday morning through
Saturday night, but small Craft conditions are expected to continue
from Bandon south. Conditions are expected to gradually improve
further Sunday into the start of next week. -Petrucelli

A weak and mostly dry cold front will bring a slight chance of rain
later today into Friday morning to the west side north of the Umpqua
divide , with a strong marine push spilling over the Siskiyous
before it moves through Friday. From late tonight into Saturday
morning northeast winds will increase on the southern coastal ranges
and western Siskiyou county with moderate overnight recoveries.
Unseasonably dry conditions with above normal temperatures are
expected Saturday through Monday, then a cooler and wetter pattern
