.DISCUSSION...Satellite imagery is showing some high cloud
exiting to the east of the forecast area this morning. This is
revealing areas of fog and low stratus from the Rogue Valley west
of Medford to the Illinois Valley and Umpqua Basin. These will
dissipate by late this morning with just some additional high
cloud cover drifting through at times. Upper ridging will nose
into the area through tonight, but a warm front will move north
and west of the area into Washington and NW Oregon and this may
bring some light rain to the coastal waters and perhaps as far
south as Reedsport. Other than that, the forecast remains

.AVIATION...29/18Z TAFs...Conditions are mainly VFR, with LIFR/IFR
stratus in the Umpqua and Illinois valleys beginning to clear. A
warm front will bring MVFR and local IFR/mountain obscuration to the
coast/coastal terrain north of Cape Blanco around 03Z this evening,
continuing into Thursday. In the Umpqua Valley around Roseburg and
Illinois Valley, there is potential for IFR conditions Wednesday
morning, but confidence is only moderate for this because of higher
clouds moving in overnight. Meantime, VFR will continue farther

The main change in the forecast this morning is a stronger depiction
of a near shore thermal trough Thursday afternoon into Friday
evening. First, Diminishing swell remains steep early this morning
ahead of a weakening warm front. The front will brush the northern
portion as it passes this evening.
High pressure offshore and the thermal trough near shore will bring
increasing north winds Thursday into Friday evening. Steep to very
steep seas will be likely, while the strongest winds (peaking near
gale force) and highest seas (at 11 to 14 feet) will be south of
Gold Beach. The thermal trough is expected to move inland this
weekend with gradually improving conditions. After wind wave and
swell subside over the weekend, conditions early next week are
expected to be below Small Craft Advisory criteria. DW

DISCUSSION...
Northwest flow exists in the upper levels this morning as the
jet stream dividing eastward exiting upper level troughing and
westward arriving upper level ridging translates across the
forecast area. This northwest flow has been streaming mostly high
cloud cover across the forecast area overnight, with low level
cloud cover and fog present from Josephine and Douglas counties
westward. Temperatures have fallen to near or below freezing
across most of Lake County where there has been less cloud cover,
and below freezing temperatures are also being observed across
portions of Modoc and Klamath counties. Forecast morning lows look
to be mostly on track, with most locations expected to be within
3 degrees of forecast lows.
With high pressure building in stronger from the southwest today,
highs this afternoon are expected to be 7 to 15 degrees warmer
than they were yesterday. This will put most east side valley
locations in the 60s for highs with upper 60s to mid 70s for the
west side valleys.
Thursday into Friday the southern portion of a frontal system will
brush through the area. This will push some low level Pacific
moisture across the west side and into the Cascades. Interestingly,
while precipitation amounts look light and mostly confined to the
coast and Umpqua Basin, all 50 model members of the EC Ensemble
indicate a trace to a few hundredths of an inch at Medford on
Friday. Meanwhile, only one of 30 ensemble members of the GEFS
show a trace or more. Altogether, the main effect of this front
will be to knock highs down a few degrees Friday as compared to
Thursday afternoon's highs. Precipitation amounts at all locations
are expected to come in under a tenth of an inch.
High pressure will build in fairly rapidly behind this front
yielding some light to moderate easterly flow, greatest across the
southwest Oregon Coastal Mountains from Thursday night through
Saturday morning. Current estimates on gusts for that time frame
across the coastal mountains is 25 to as high as 40 mph, greatest
Friday morning.
We're still on track for warm and dry afternoons this weekend
with highs peaking 10-15 degrees above calendar day averages in
the Saturday to Monday time frame.
European Center Ensemble model guidance continues to suggest a
breakdown in the upper level ridge on or about Wednesday, October
6th, whereas the Global Ensemble Forecast system indicates the
breakdown occuring between the 6th and the 9th. Altogether,
ensembles are in good agreement in indicating a transition to
cooler and wetter weather is likely to occur between the 6th and
