.DISCUSSION...A warm front exists about 60 NM from the coast and
an extensive cloud shield of upper level clouds can be observed
over-running this boundary. Behind the warm front, another 60 to
100 NM, a cold front is racing to catch up. The warm front will
approach the coast later this evening and light amounts of rain
will be possible north of Coos Bay. The cold front will catch up
and the two will occlude late tonight causing the heaviest
rainfall to move through early Saturday morning at the coast and
reach the Cascades by Saturday afternoon. Because the warm front
exists in full ahead of this front, warm air aloft will exist
during the occlusion process. This should prevent any snow off of
the Cascades peaks until Saturday night when the cold front can
pass the Cascades and the cold pool pivots over the region. This
could be the first snowfall for the rim of Crater Lake this year,
which would be faster than the mean first snowfall of Sep. 27.
In the low level water vapor satellite channel dry air can be
observed at the surface. This dry air will be present early in the
afternoon, but as gusty winds begin to surface RHs will begin to
increase with moister air mixing down. That said, some isolated
pockets of near critical conditions are possible, especially in
Modoc County.
There is also concern for concentrated areas of blowing dust
downwind of dry lake beds on the east side as winds increase today
and again tomorrow afternoon.
All of this is accounted for in the current forecast and so no
morning update was required. -Miles

.AVIATION...17/12Z TAFs...Coastal stratus with IFR is present at
Cape Blanco this morning and also south of the cape and over the
marine waters out to around 20 NM miles from shore. As of 12Z,
it was clear at North Bend. We can't completely rule out some IFR
moving in there this morning for an hour or two, but should mostly
remain VFR. VFR prevails inland, though smoke will continue to
decrease visibilities near wildfires into this evening, especially
in northern California and from the southern Oregon Cascade
foothills eastward. MVFR associated with the cold front will reach
the coast this afternoon with rain developing this evening and
continuing overnight into Saturday. Rain will arrive very late
tonight in the Umpqua Basin, but probably holds off until around
15-16Z Saturday at Medford -- and even later (~17-19Z) at Klamath

.MARINE...Updated 830 AM PDT Friday 17 September 2021...Winds will
become southerly this afternoon ahead of a potent cold front,
which will move onshore late Friday night into Saturday morning.
This will be followed by a weaker front Saturday night. This front
will bring conditions hazardous to small craft north of Gold
Beach tonight through Saturday. Expect periods of moderate to
heavy rain tonight into Saturday morning. Seas will become swell
dominated Sunday. The thermal trough will return Sunday night into
Monday, and strong north winds will return, especially south of
Cape Blanco. The thermal trough will weaken Tuesday.

.FIRE WEATHER...Updated 800 AM PDT Friday 17 September 2021...A
significant weather change will occur with the arrival of a strong,
wet cold front and a deep trough that is likely to produce much
cooler temperatures and widespread precipitation through the
weekend.
Gusty south to southwest winds are expected along the coast and east
of the Cascades ahead of the front Friday afternoon, but humidities
will rise enough to prevent most areas from reaching Red Flag
criteria. It will be even windier east of the Cascades Saturday, but
humidities will also continue to rise.
Confidence remains high for significant precipitation, beginning
along the coast very early Saturday morning, spreading inland to the
Cascades by late Saturday morning, then to the rest of the forecast
area through Saturday evening. Once the front passes late Saturday,
the upper level trough will swing overhead, bringing showers to the
area through Sunday evening. A stray thunderstorm is not out of the
question, especially along the coast in Douglas County, and along
the Cascades crest. Wetting rains are expected for almost all of the
area, with significant rainfall amounts possible along and west of
the Cascades. This also means that debris flow/mudslides are
possible in the most exposed portions of burn scars. There is a low
(~10%) probability of this occurring, but the impact could be large
if it does occur. One exception to this rule will be along the Lava
Burn Scar with the Whitney Glacier and Whitney Creek. Probabilities
there are a bit higher (~30%) based on past rain events this summer.
This could impact US Highway 97 where Whitney Creek intersects the
road.
This rain will not be a "season-ending event", but the rain will
make a significant dent in the season. While wetting rains are
likely and fire weather conditions will be much improved, ridging
and dry conditions will be quick to return on the backside of the
system early next week. Also, there are indications of some gusty
east winds, especially over the ridges and the usual downslope
locations Monday night into Wednesday. As a result, fire weather
concerns may quickly return despite the rains. That being said,
another wet front is possible mid to late next week, although the
exact nature of the system remains uncertain at this time range.
