.SHORT TERM...A weak front is approaching the area this evening.
This front will move inland late tonight and Saturday and an upper
trough will move over the region, shifting east Saturday evening.
Ahead of this front, areas of low to mid clouds have moved into
portions of the coast and coastal mountains. Light precipitation
is forecast to spread into the coast late tonight and then inland
into the Umpqua Basin and portions of the southern Oregon
Cascades Saturday morning. There is lower confidence on light rain
spreading south of the Umpqua Divide into Josephine and Jackson
Counties on Saturday. Current models and ensembles favor most the
precipitation staying from the Umpqua Divide north and coastal
mountains west. Some light showers may linger into the afternoon,
mainly across the coastal mountains and over the south-central
Oregon Cascades and foothills in Douglas County.
Behind the front, gusty north winds will develop along the coast
Saturday afternoon and evening with gusty northwest winds inland,
especially from the Cascades east. As a thermal trough develops
along the coast, this will transition to a gusty northeast wind
pattern across the coastal mountains and gusty north winds over
the coast and coastal waters Saturday night and Sunday.

.AVIATION...For the 10/00Z TAF Cycle...Areas of MVFR conditions are
expected to develop along the coast and into the Umpqua Basin
tonight and Saturday morning as a weak front moves into the area.
Light showers and mountain obscurations are also expected through
Saturday morning over the coastal mountains and inland for portions
of the Umpqua Divide and Southern Oregon Cascades. Conditions will
improve to VFR in the late morning and early afternoon. Gusty winds
are expected in the afternoon and early evening east of the
Cascades, including Klamath Falls. -CC

highest from from Cape Sebastian south this afternoon.
This evening through Saturday morning another relatively light
period of winds and seas is expected as the front moves through.
This is then likely to be follow by a longer and stronger north wind
event with steep to very steep seas late Saturday into early next
week.
Winds may rise to gales for portions of the waters south of Cape
Blanco on Sunday and continue into Monday. Have issued a Gale Watch
for most of the waters south of Cape Blanco. Expecting conditions
hazardous to small crafts to precede this, but have held off
issuing that advisory until the current small craft ends this
evening. Gusty, north winds and elevated seas may continue into

SHORT TERM...This afternoon through Monday morning...Skies are
clear across much of the forecast area this afternoon with
temperatures running around 5 to 10 degrees warmer than this time
yesterday. Dry conditions will continue across the region this
evening with afternoon temperatures running about 5 to 10 degrees
above normal today.
A weak, mostly dry front will cross the area late tonight into
Saturday. The bulk of the energy will be directed well north of the
area and any precipitation will be limited to areas along and north
of the Umpqua Divide. Precipitation amounts will be light, with
generally less than a tenth of an inch expected. The associated
cloud cover will keep temperatures warmer tonight than last night.
Any lingering precipitation Saturday morning will come to an end by
early afternoon, but clouds will linger into the evening hours. A
cooler air mass will be in place behind this front, and afternoon
temperatures Saturday will be around 5 to 10 degrees below normal,
especially west of the Cascades. Expect breezy west to northwest
winds behind the front Saturday afternoon.
Upper level ridging builds in Saturday night into Sunday and a
thermal trough will strengthen at the surface. Low level easterly
flow will increase Saturday night, helping to dry the atmosphere and
erode any remain clouds. With a cool air mass in place, clearing
skies, and lowering dewpoints, temperatures are expected to drop to
around 5 to 10 degrees below normal. Teens are expected east of the
Cascades with frost/freeze conditions expected for many west side
valleys. A Freeze Watch remains in effect for west side valleys
where agricultural interests are now sensitive to freezing
temperatures.
Sunday morning will be the coolest morning of the forecast period as
temperatures moderate. Dry conditions with warm afternoons are
expected Sunday and into the work week. /BR-y
LONG TERM...Tuesday through Friday... The extended forecast begins
with an "inside slider" low pressure system sliding from northwest
to southeast to our area. This low likely will not bring any
precipitation to our area, but it will bring strong east winds,
particularly to areas east of the Cascades, and low humidity values.
Ensembles are in good agreement, and have gone with the National
Blend of Models for most of the forecast package. After the low
slides southward, it stalls, and our area will stay in the eastern
edge of an Omega Blocking pattern.
This sort of pattern would be very problematic for fire weather
concerns were it August, September, or October; but since we're
still coming out of the wet season, this pattern will work to dry
out fuels in the area. Overall, expect mild, windy, and dry weather
for most of next week with the peak winds occurring Tuesday and
Wednesday. With this, expect humidity forecasts to continue lowering
through the forecast period as we move closer to the event,
especially for areas east of the Cascades, Marble Mountains, and the
Kalmiopsis Wilderness areas. -Schaaf
