Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Medford OR 843 PM PDT Sun Mar 21 2021 .UPDATE...No major changes were necessary to the forecast this evening, except to bring things in line with the current observations, such as the timing of precipitation and cloud cover. Some light precipitation has started to move onshore into the northwestern portions of the forecast area this evening. This is the leading edge of the next front that will pass through the area tonight through tomorrow afternoon. Snow levels for the bulk of this event are expected to stay above 3000 feet, so snow impacts will be limited, however there could be several inches of snowfall in the Cascades by the time precipitation ends tomorrow afternoon. Fortunately, ground temperatures are warm, so impacts will be further limited. Otherwise, most locations will see some light to moderate rain, with gusty winds possible eats of the Cascades tomorrow afternoon. For more information on this and the rest of the forecast, see the previous discussion below. -BPN && .AVIATION...For the 22/00Z TAF Cycle...VFR will be the predominant condition into the early evening. The next cold front will spread rain, MVFR, and areas of terrain obscuration to the coast around 03Z this evening. These conditions will spread inland to the Cascades tonight, and locally into the east side during Monday morning. MVFR conditions and mountain obscuration are expected in general on Monday as showers continue across the area. -DW && .MARINE...Updated 800 PM PDT Sunday 21 Mar 2021...A cold front will move through tonight into Monday. South to southwest winds of 15 to 20 kt and seas of 9 ft at 11 seconds will be near or just below advisory levels, highest north of Cape Blanco. West-northwest swell will follow the front Monday afternoon and night, but will mostly remain at 8 to 9 feet at 11 seconds (below the advisory level of 10 ft). High pressure will then strengthen offshore on Tuesday with a thermal trough developing along the coast. This will lead to strengthening north winds and elevated wind- dominated seas (probably reaching advisory level), especially for areas south of Cape Blanco. Latest guidance is showing the potential for 35 kt wind gusts south of Gold Beach late Tuesday afternoon into the evening. The next cold front will move across the waters on Wednesday with additional weaker disturbances then accompanying building west- northwest seas Wednesday night into Thursday. High pressure centered offshore will build toward the waters Thursday night into Friday night with low pressure inland. This will likely produce another episode of strengthening north winds (strongest south of Cape Blanco). Conditions are likely to improve for Saturday into Sunday as the high builds into the waters. -Spilde/DW && .PREV DISCUSSION... /Issued 244 PM PDT Sun Mar 21 2021/ DISCUSSION...An early spring, but late winter like, system will move into the region tonight. This system will enter on the favorable left exit region of a 120 kt jet, there is little upper level divergence to bring broad upper lift with this system. However, with the good dynamics in the left exit region of this strong jet, precipitation amounts will be highest on the coastal ranges and the Cascades but the valleys between will not be fully shadowed and precipitation will spill over to east of the Cascades. Snow levels with this front will drop briefly down to 2500 feet, but the bulk of the snowfall will be above 3000 feet with this system. The bulk of the snowfall will be in the Cascades, and will be close to advisory amounts, but with current road temperatures in the 60s on the Cascade passes, snow should melt quickly. Showers remain over the region behind the front as the jet becomes northerly aligned with the nose of the jet over the region. Showers finally taper off and become more confined to the Cascades as the BL flow becomes northerly as well by Tuesday morning when a thermal trough starts to deepen along the coast. An upper level ridge then nudges over the Pacific Northwest with winds becoming north-northeast and showers drop off completely by Tuesday afternoon, Sven Long-term...Wednesday through Sunday...One front will arrive Wednesday, followed by high pressure building through the weekend. Precipitation associated with Wednesday's cold front will arrive at the coast Wednesday afternoon and given the trajectory of the system, from the northwest, precipitation will be focused north of the CA/OR border. Several inches of snow are expected in the High Cascades, but the overall precipitation with this front should be less than tonight's/tomorrow's front. Gusty northwest winds are expected Wednesday afternoon along and ahead of the front. Drier but cooler conditions are expected Thursday behind the front. Northerly breezes are expected Thursday. Temperatures trend warmer by about 10 degrees on Friday, and they warm further Saturday and Sunday under high pressure. By Sunday, the National Blend of Models suggests a 70 percent chance that the high temperature in Monday will be 70 degrees.
