.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
10:00 AM UPDATE: No changes needed to the previous discussion
below at this time. Forecast is still being evaluated. Any
change may come in the Wednesday timeframe, as winds may need to
be bumped up across the area. This will be decided by the
afternoon update.
PREVIOUS DISCUSSION: Thickening clouds today but remaining dry.
Low pressure will track across central FL this morning and
offshore of the southern Mid-Atlantic coast tonight. Models have
remained consistent keeping track of coastal low well southeast
of the area, but are faster than 24 hrs ago. Associated precip
to the left of the storm track is fcst to reach the southern
half of St. Mary's County and may reach as far north as the I-95
corridor this evening, although this continues to be a low
probability outcome. Low pressure quickly moves away from the
area after 12Z Wed with blustery conditiond developing in its
wake.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
A brief period of snow showers is expected over the Alleghenies
associated with a northern stream vort max moving across western
Pennsylvania. Track is a bit too far north and moisture very
limited to produce anything significant. Duration is also short
confined to 6 hrs or less. Main story, though, will the blustery
conditions developing with gusts to 30 mph (40 mph in the mtns)
gradually diminishing in the evening. Wind chill values will be
in the teens and twenties Wed night.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
While confidence with respect to the longwave pattern across the
Pacific and into North America in the long term period is rather
high, confidence remains substantially lower with respect to the
finer scale details. Over the past few days, a very strong Pacific
jet has extended toward the dateline and strong cyclogenesis events
in the jet exit region have pumped up a highly anomalous ridge over
the Aleutians and the Alaskan mainland. This has displaced colder
air southward, allowing highly anomalous troughing to become
established along the West Coast. This general pattern will remain
locked in place through the long term period. Following split flow
in place across the CONUS currently, a single strong zonal jet will
develop by mid-late week and extend from the base of the West Coast
trough eastward across the CONUS. Several disturbances will
round the base of the West Coast trough and rapidly travel eastward
through the zonal upper level jet during the long term period. The
relative positioning and timing of these disturbances is where
guidance starts to diverge.
The first disturbance will track to our north through the Great
Lakes Friday night into Saturday. There is a fair amount of spread
with respect to the strength of this system, and there has been a
notable downtrend in the intensity of this low since yesterday.
Regardless, clouds will be on the increase Friday, and we'll have a
chance for some showers Friday night. What is for sure, is that
we'll be on the warm side of the system, so all of the precipitation
Friday night will fall in the form of rain, even in the mountains.
Saturday will be a very warm day by late December standards, with
highs in the 50s and 60s. As the system's cold front passes through,
it will turn gusty out of the west Saturday afternoon and eventually
northwest Saturday night. There is still a chance that winds could
be strong, but the signal for high winds has decreased relative to
yesterday as well, along with the trend for a weaker area of low
pressure tracking to our north.
Behind this system, ensemble guidance shows considerable spread with
respect to both temperatures and precipitation, but most solutions
favor continued above normal temperatures. Additional chances for
precipitation may come Saturday night and Monday, but as was
mentioned before, spread is considerable with these systems.

.AVIATION /15Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Thickening mid-high level clouds today with cigs lowering to
035-045 this evening. Wednesday...Brisk NW 15-20 kt with freq
gusts up to 30kt, but could briefly gust up to 35kt Wed morning.
VFR conditions are expected on Friday. Sub-VFR conditions may be
possible at times Friday night into Saturday morning as an area of
low pressure tracks to our north. VFR conditions are expected again
Saturday afternoon through Saturday night.

Strengthening winds tonight with strong SCA conditions
Wednesday and Wednesday night. A brief period of gale conditions
is possible Wednesday morning, but duration appears too short

Friday and Friday night will be out of the south, before shifting
