What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this small craft advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Los Angeles, CA wrote its last area forecast discussion before this small craft advisory went out at Jan 14, 8:16 PM PST, 6 hours 15 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Jan 14, 8:16 PM PST, 6 hours 15 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA
816 PM PST Thu Jan 14 2021

.SYNOPSIS...14/358 PM.

Except for high clouds at times, skies will be mostly clear
across the region through Monday. An upper low may bring
increasing clouds Tuesday and Wednesday. There will be gusty
north to northeast winds through Saturday and again Tuesday into
Wednesday, especially across Los Angeles and Ventura Counties.
High temperatures will be well above normal through Saturday, with
possible record highs Friday. Slight cooling is expected Sunday,
then much cooler by Tuesday.

&&

.SHORT TERM (THU-SUN)...14/813 PM.

***UPDATE***

Clear, dry and windy conditions this evening as Santa Ana winds
affect much of Los Angeles and Ventura Counties. Offshore pressure
gradients are expected to increase overnight from -5.4 mb between
Daggett and LAX this afternoon to -7.7 mb at 4 AM. Fairly
widespread gusts between 35 to 45 mph have been observed, with a
few gusts between 50 to 55 mph over the more exposed ridges such
as Boney Mountain and Wiley Ridge. The winds will continue to
increase this evening, peaking from around midnight through noon
on Friday, then diminishing gradually through Friday afternoon.

After an unseasonably warm day, with some areas seeing highs in
the 80s to just above 90 degrees. Both the Camarillo and Santa
Barbara Airports saw daily records, with Camarillo observing a
high of 91 degrees, with 83 at Santa Barbara.

The gusty offshore winds are occuring in combination with above-
normal temperatures, low humidities, and very dry fuels. A Red
Flag Warning is now in effect through 4 PM Friday for the valleys
and mountains of LA and Ventura Counties (except the San Gabriel
and Antelope Valleys). See the Fire discussion below for more
details.

***From Previous Discussion***

An unseasonably strong 590 dm upper level high about 300 NM SW of
Point Conception will move little thru Fri, then drift slowly W
Fri night thru Sun. H5 heights over the forecast area are expected
to be about 587-588 dm Fri, drop slightly to 583-585 dm on Sat,
then fall further to about 581-583 dm on Sun.

Mostly clear skies will continue through Sunday altho there may
be a few hi clouds at times. Decent offshore pressure gradients
will persist to the N and E thru Sun, with gradients to the E
peaking late tonight, altho a secondary peak is forecast for 12Z
Sun (LAX- DAG -6.9 mb). Continued gusty Advisory-level NE winds
can be expected tonight and Fri, especially over the wind- prone
areas of VTU/L.A. Counties. For further details please see the
latest Non- Precipitation Weather Message (LAXNPWLOX). Gusty NE
winds should prevail in these areas Fri night and Sat, and again
Sat night into Sun morning, with a few Advisory-level gusts not
out of the question in some areas. There is also the chance that
another Wind Advisory may be needed Sat night into Sun.

High temps on Fri will increase another couple of degrees for most
areas, with the warmest coast and vlys expected to reach the 80s to
around 90, or possible very low 90s is some spots. These temps
will be about 15-25 deg or more above seasonal norms. In fact,
more record high temps are possible as well on Fri, including
downtown Los Angeles where the record is 85 degrees set in 2014
(fcst high 89 degrees). It will turn a couple of degrees cooler
Sat but remain much above normal with the warmest vlys and inland
coastal areas topping out in the 80s. On Sun, temps will drop a
few more degrees with highs in the warmest vlys and inland coastal
areas reaching the upper 70s to lower 80s, still 8-18 deg above
normal. The hottest spot in the continental U.S. will certainly be
somewhere in southern California each day thru the weekend.

.LONG TERM (MON-THU)...14/212 PM.

The deterministic GFS and EC are in general agreement Mon thru
Tue night then start to diverge Wed thru Thu. The upper high will
be pushed further W Sun night and Mon as an upper level trof moves
thru CA from N to S. Another sharper upper level trof is expected
to move out of the srn Great Basin and into far sern CA Mon
night. This system will strengthen into an upper level low over
far swrn CA by Tue morning then dig further S off the nrn Baja
coast Tue afternoon. The EC weakens this system while it pushes E
thru Wed, while the GFS lingers the upper level low over nrn Baja
thru Wed afternoon. Further differences show up for Thu with the
EC forecasting a broad, dry NW flow aloft over the region, while
the GFS brings another cold upper level trof into the area with
some pcpn. The mean ensembles are in somewhat better agreement for
Wed and Thu, but the EC still weakens the upper low faster than
the GFS. In addition, the GFS mean ensembles bring some pcpn into
the forecast area on Thu. The NBM remains dry thru Thu and will
lean toward this forecast.

Another potential fly in the ointment is the possibility of wrap-
around moisture from the Baja upper level low from Tue afternoon
into Wed afternoon. Both the EC and GFS forecast some pcpn
pushing into srn CA from the E during the period, but the pcpn
remains just E of the forecast area. Will keep things dry for now
but this fcst could change as we draw closer to early next week.

Mostly clear skies are expected Mon thru Thu, altho some clouds
from the upper level low could affect the area at times Tue into
Wed. The bigger story is the potential for strong and gusty,
possibly damaging, north winds Mon night thru Wed morning over
portions of VTU/L.A. Counties as well as srn SBA County. There
will be strong offshore gradients, especially to the N, and good
cold air advection and upper level support.

Temperatures will be cooler but continue several degrees above
normal on Mon. It will turn much cooler and closer to normal to
even slightly below normal Tue, warm to slightly above normal Wed,
then turn cooler again to near or slightly below normal for Thu.

&&

.FIRE WEATHER...14/815 PM.

Red Flag Warnings are in effect for the Los Angeles and Ventura
County Valleys and Mountains through Friday afternoon, with a
chance of being extended through Saturday. Expect humidities to
lower into the 5 to 10 percent range by Friday afternoon in the
driest areas. In addition, Sundowner winds and very dry air will
impact southern Santa Barbara County, including the Santa Ynez
Range and Montecito, Friday night into Saturday. Red Flag Warnings
are possible, and a Fire Weather Watch will also be issued to
address that. Lastly, another Santa Ana wind event with dry air is
likely Monday through Tuesday or Wednesday, with a growing
potential for strong and damaging winds and widespread Red Flag
Warnings.

With very little rainfall so far this season, and several weeks
of drying since the last rain, fuels remain critically dry and
ripe for burning. The public should be urged to use extreme
caution with anything that could start a fire. If you live in a
fire danger area, now is the time to be ready and set to evacuate
if a fire breaks out and you are called to do so.

&&

.AVIATION...14/2354Z.

At 2330Z at KLAX, there was a shallow marine layer. The base of
the inversion was at 360 feet, and the top was at 142600 feet
with a temperature of 26 degrees C.

High confidence in all TAF sites. There is a chance of moderate
turbulence and LLWS near higher terrain through Friday morning due
to NE winds.

KLAX...High confidence in the 00Z TAF with VFR conditions
expected. High confidence that an east wind component will remain
6 kt or less.

KBUR...High confidence in the 00Z TAF with VFR conditions
expected.

&&

.MARINE...14/753 PM.

High confidence that winds and seas will remain below Small Craft
Advisory (SCA) level through Friday afternoon. However, moderate
confidence in SCA level northeast winds across the waters from
Point Mugu to Santa Monica out to around Anacapa Island by early
Friday morning lasting until late morning. An SCA will be in
effect for this area through 10am Friday. Gusty northwest winds
are expected to return to the waters along the Central Coast and
southward to San Nicolas Island Friday afternoon, but better
confidence for SCA level winds by Saturday afternoon. In addition,
a large northwest swell will enter the waters on Saturday leading
to another round of SCA level hazardous seas over 10 feet from
Saturday and potentially through Monday. Strong north to northeast
winds are likely across all the waters on Monday with a potential
for gales.

&&

.BEACHES...14/707 PM.

After a brief lull through Friday, another large, long period
west to northwest swell will move through the coastal waters
Saturday into early next week resulting in additional high surf
and dangerous rip currents on all west and northwest facing
beaches.

For the Central Coast, surf will continue to slowly subside
through Friday. A reinforcing large northwest swell will move
into the coastal waters Friday night and into the weekend bringing
another round of dangerous high surf.

The Los Angeles and Ventura County beaches, along with exposed
west facing beaches across the Santa Barbara South Coast will
experience elevated surf 3 to 5 feet with dangerous rip currents.
By the weekend, another swell will move through the Santa Barbara
Channel, bringing additional high surf for Saturday/Saturday
night.
