Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA
215 PM PDT Wed May 26 2021
.SYNOPSIS...25/825 PM.
Afternoon temperatures will gradually cool as overnight and
morning low clouds and fog become more widely spread across the
region through the week. Gusty northwest winds will also continue
with the strongest winds focused over southern Santa Barbara
County.
&&
.SHORT TERM (TDY-SAT)...26/214 PM.
Overall, 12Z models in good synoptic agreement through the short
term period. At upper levels, broad trough will linger over the
area through Friday then will deepen on Saturday. Near the surface
moderate to strong onshore gradients will continue through
Saturday with some northerly gradients persisting.
Forecast-wise, it looks to be a rather bland period for the short
term. With the continued onshore gradients and trough overhead,
expect stratus/fog to become more prevalent across the coasts and
coastal valleys each night/morning. Given the strength of the
onshore flow, clearing could be slow/limited along the coast each
afternoon. Other than stratus, skies are expected to remain mostly
clear through the period.
As for winds, do not anticipate any significant issues. As
mentioned above, there will be some continued northerly offshore
gradients lingering through Saturday. These gradients will remain
rather weak tonight, so no advisory-level wind are anticipated.
However for Thursday night and again Friday night, the northerly
gradients are forecast to increase a bit. So, there is a chance of
low end advisory level winds across southern SBA county Thursday
night and Friday night. Otherwise, will expect a continuation of
gusty southwesterly winds each afternoon and evening across
interior sections.
With regard to temperatures, do not anticipate any major swings
one way or another. The increasing onshore gradients/marine
influence will be counteracted by some slight thickness increases
Thursday/Friday. So, will expect some slightly cooler temperatures
through Friday, but most areas will be hovering slightly above
seasonal normals. On Saturday, will expect some additional cooling
all areas as the upper level trough deepens, but still hovering
near seasonal normals.
.LONG TERM (SUN-WED)...26/214 PM.
For the extended, models continue to exhibit decent synoptic
agreement. At upper levels, trough will drift southeastward and
form a cutoff low over northern Mexico while a ridge builds in
from the west over the area. Near the surface, varying amounts of
onshore flow will continue.
For Sunday, will expect similar conditions to Saturday with
rather widespread stratus/fog with temperatures hovering near
seasonal normals. Gusty southwesterly winds will continue across
interior sections during the afternoon and evening hours.
For Monday through Wednesday, the building upper level ridge will
bring a noticeable warming trend to the area along with less
extensive stratus/fog during the nighttime hours. Currently, it
looks like Tuesday/Wednesday will be warmest days with current
official NBM forecast indicating 70s/80s west of the mountains
and 90s across interior sections. Confidence in this temperature
forecast is moderate at best as there is a decent chance of much
warmer temperatures than currently forecast (based on bias
corrected forecasts). At this time, will continue with NBM numbers
for the extended, but would not be surprised to see those forecast
numbers increase over the next few days.

.AVIATION...26/2030Z.
At 1943Z at KLAX, the marine layer was 1700 feet deep. The top of
the inversion was around 3800 feet with a temperature of 17 C.
High confidence in 18Z desert and valley TAFs as well as KSBA
over the 24-hour period. Moderate confidence in the coastal and
valley TAFs. A rather strong eddy spun up quickly and brought
fairly strong east winds to KLAX for a couple of hours, but the
winds are starting to wind down and should shift to the west in
the next hour or so. The eddy is helping to bring the coastal
stratus ever closer to the LA/Ventura county coast, and chances
are increasing that the marine clouds are going to push into the
coastal TAF sites early this evening, perhaps shortly after 00z
this evening.
For tonight, there should be widespread marine clouds in the
coastal and valley sites with IFR/LIFR conditions on the central
coast and MVFR conditions south of Santa Barbara county. there is
a 30 percent chance of marine clouds pushing into KSBA early
Thursday morning, but for now the KSBA TAF indicates clear skies.
KLAX...Moderate confidence in 18z TAF. Low clouds should arrive
earlier this evening, perhaps as early as around 00z. There is a
30 percent chance of east winds near 8 knots or so after 12z.
KBUR...Moderate confidence in the 18z TAF. There is a 30 percent
chance of the marine clouds arriving two or more hours from the
forecasted time of arrival.

.MARINE...26/854 AM.
Outer Waters...The current GALE WARNING will be allowed to expire
at 9 am this morning across zones 673 and 676. A Small Craft
Advisory will be in effect across the entire outer waters today
through basically early Thursday or the first half of Thursday. A
GALE WATCH remains in effect for the entire Outer Waters valid
initially across the northern zone PZZ670 by mid Thursday morning,
then overspread across the much of the Outer Waters from PZZ673
to areas northwest of San Nicolas Island by the afternoon in
PZZ676. Gusts between 35 and 40 knots are possible through early
to mid morning Friday before winds lower to SCA levels into next
weekend. Unless things change the GALE WATCH will be converted to
a GALE WARNING in the afternoon issuance.
Nearshore Coastal Waters N of Point Sal...There is a 60% chance
for SCA level gusts this afternoon and evening, mainly across the
northern portion, with a better chance of more widespread SCA
level NW wind gusts Thursday afternoon through early Friday
morning. There is a 50% chance for GALE force winds as well. A
GALE WATCH has been issued valid for Thursday afternoon through
mid evening hours. Otherwise it looks like afternoon and evening
SCA level gusts through the weekend.
Inner Waters S of Point Conception...Gusty Northwest to north
winds across the western portion of the Santa Barbara Channel will
diminish to below SCA advisory levels early this morning. There
is a 30% chance for SCA level gusts across the western portion
this afternoon and evening. There is a 70% chance for strong SCA
level winds across the western portion on Thursday afternoon and
evening, with a 50% chance for GALE force winds during the same
time period. A GALE WATCH remains in effect for this region.
Expect a continuation of afternoon and evening SCA level gusts
each afternoon and evening through the weekend. Not expecting any
SCA level winds or seas to affect the Inner Waters from Anacapa
Island through the San Pedro Channel and to San Clemente through
the period.
There will be patchy dense with visibility one nautical mile or
less, across the coastal waters during the overnight and morning
hours through the week. The fog is most likely to develop across
the waters off the Central Coast and west of Los Angeles County
tonight and will be more widely spread as the week progresses.
