Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 322 AM PDT Thu Jul 29 2021 .SYNOPSIS...Afternoon and evening thunderstorms are expected through the rest of the week with at or just above normal temperatures. A wet weekend is in store with below normal temperatures. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Friday afternoon Monsoon moisture continues to stream into Nevada. Afternoon and evening thunderstorms will develop again today, with best coverage south of I80 and isolated coverage north of it. Fairly slow flow today will allow for some spots that do get showers to have higher rainfall totals once again and a storm or two could produce localized flooding. There may also be a few strong storms. High temperatures will be in the 80's in central Nevada and the mid 80's to mid 90's in northern Nevada valleys. Some shower and isolated thunderstorm activity will likely continue overnight tonight, mainly in eastern Nevada, with overnight lows in the mid 50's to the mid 60's. Pwats jump on Friday, as the ridge axis that has been over central Nevada quickly shifts westward over the western US. This will allow for a much greater surge of moisture to funnel northward into Nevada. Shower and thunderstorm coverage is expected to expand through the day and precipitation will become fairly widespread by evening. The WPC has a slight risk for excessive rainfall well into central Nevada, which does not occur often. The SPS for excessive rainfall was expanded to the Friday through Sunday period and a Flood Watch could very well be issued later today for at least central Nevada. Some strong storms are also a possibility. Dropped highs down some as cloud cover and showers will likely limit afternoon heating. .LONG TERM...Friday night through next Wednesday Deep monsoonal surge continues through the weekend as high pressure centered over the central Plains is favorable. Embedded short wave energy will be moving northward. Potential significant rainfall and flash flooding will be dictated by mesoscale features, which is a challenge 2-3 days in advance but expect a day of heavy rainers for Saturday, possibly some cells persisting through the night. Another possible outcome is a beneficial stratiform rain as the moist environment stabilizes. Precipitable water content will be anomalously high. Once the wave shifts north of Nevada, drier air does spill into northwest Nevada, but eastern part of the state remains moist with localized heavy rainers. Monday through Wednesday a Pacific trough will be along the West Coast with drier southwest flow advecting drier air into the state. There is a chance that energy ejecting from the trough brings a little cooler air, but not fully confident that this occurs. Some instability may persist over the northeast NV corner, but the overall trend will be for diminished diurnally driven convection as the monsoonal moisture gets pushed east. With more sunshine, afternoon temperatures return to the 90s. && .AVIATION...More showers and thunderstorms expected this afternoon and evening for a majority of the sites. For KELY, the strongest of today's activity is expected here in the afternoon before spreading north to KEKO and KBAM closer to the evening hours. Look for KEKO to have better chances of thunderstorms at their site. To the south KTPH will see storms start to the north in the early afternoon before seeing more isolated thunderstorms around the area in the evening hours. KWMC is not expected to see much activity, but distant thunderstorms from the east are expected to be present in the evening alongside decent high cloud cover. Smoke and haze will continue to be present in the northern sites, but expect it to have a minimal impact to conditions for today. && .FIRE WEATHER...Another round of showers and thunderstorms can be expected today. Main threats will be locally moderate to heavy rain and gusty and erratic winds. Friday through Sunday. A very moist airmass will move into the area. This will expand areal coverage to many locations with a higher chance of wetting rains being seen in the area. The fly in the ointment is the amount of cloud cover and destabilization of the atmosphere. If cloud cover remains high, there is less of a potential for the forecast precipitation amounts.
