Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 149 AM PDT Wed Jul 7 2021 .SYNOPSIS...Hot and mainly dry conditions expected through the weekend as high pressure dominates. Elevated fire weather concerns Wednesday and especially Thursday as gusty winds are expected. && .SHORT TERM...This morning through Thursday evening. Area of elevated moisture remains across eastern Nevada this morning, bringing layer cu around 12kft. Expect this moisture to slowly push north and east today. With daytime heating, expect more cu buildups this afternoon. May be enough moisture and instability over northeast Elko county for isolated showers/storms, much like what we saw across eastern NV Tuesday. Little in the way of precip hitting ground, but a few lightning strikes and gusty downdraft/outflow winds. A combo of shortwaves will push across the PacNW, bringing slightly tighter gradients and some stronger winds aloft. Expect breezy surface winds this afternoon/evening and again on Thursday. Thursday's winds look to be a bit stronger as a weak frontal boundary associated with second shortwave pushes across northern NV, leading to elevated fire wx concerns. Expect the hot temps to continue with highs in the mid 90s to lower 100s and lows in the upper 50s to low 70s. .LONG TERM...Thursday night through next Wednesday. A weak frontal boundary will through the area Thursday and Thursday night. However, temperatures Friday will only be 1 to 3 degrees cooler as a result with considerable heat building back into central and northern Nevada for the the weekend with highs in the lower 100s pretty much in all valleys. Forecast confidence is high with the peak of this next heat wave occurring Saturday and Sunday before slight cooling commences Monday. However, temperatures going forward into next week are likely to be still above normal, just not well above normal. Heat advisories are in place for heat Wednesday into Thursday for lower elevation locations mainly along and north of I-80. Low temperatures in the 50s and 60s Thursday night and Friday night will warm into the 60s in many lower valleys while far eastern Elko county may not get below the mid 70s through the weekend. As the mid-level ridge axis shifts from the four corners region to over the Great Basin and desert southwest Friday and Saturday, some monsoon moisture could work its way into southern Nevada as early as Sunday with better chances for afternoon showers and thunderstorms for early next week across mainly northern Nye and White Pine counties. Winds will remain elevated from the west-northwest across northeastern Nevada Friday in the wake of the trough moving through the northern Rockies but should be below critical fire weather thresholds. Light winds are expected Saturday with ridge axis firmly in place.
