An upper-level composite analysis this afternoon reveals a deep ridge extending northward from the western Caribbean to the Ohio Valley. This ridge is supporting a sprawling surface high pressure cell extending from near the mid-Atlantic coast to Mexico. The associated air mass is of continental origin, and incoming air trajectories in the Florida Keys, rooted in this highly modified continental polar air, are transporting rather "pleasant" air by mid/late May standards in the Florida Keys. Current air temperatures in most Keys island communities are in the mid 80s, with dewpoint temperatures generally in the mid/upper 60s. The atmosphere exhibits merely weak conditional instability with a rather shallow moist layer owing to the large-scale, ridge-induced subsidence. However, boundary-layer momentum is sufficiently high over complex oceanic/coastal terrain to have induced some interesting mesoscale convergence lines resulting in local flow accelerations, cumulus congestus development, and even rain showers (tops mostly below 15,000 feet AGL), including one that briefly wetted the streets around the Weather Forecast Office here in beautiful mid-town Key West. Nevertheless, the chance for measurable rain across the service area in this regime remains slim. For this week, we expect some higher rain and thunder chances developing Tuesday-Thursday, as a short-wave trough and associated geopotential height falls shift eastward across the Gulf basin. This will induce transient episodes of forcing for ascent, destabilization of tropospheric columns and a deepening moist layer. Therefore, we have increased rain chances during the mid- week period. By the end of the week, a cut-off anticyclone-cyclone pair seems likely to set up over the eastern U.S. and western north Atlantic, respectively. This will facilitate a return to incoming trajectories of modified continental air, lower dewpoint, temperatures, and reduced rain/thunder chances. The local digital forecast database has been updated, and derived products will be available during the next hour via normal ways and means. && .MARINE... No watches, warnings, or advisories are in effect for Florida Keys coastal waters at this time. However, Small Craft Should Exercise Caution for all zones as sustained east winds will remain in the range of 15-20 knots. A sprawling high pressure cell of continental origin will maintain fresh to strong breezes for most of the week, with winds and seas building further Tuesday night through Thursday, as the high expands and intensifies. && .AVIATION... VFR conditions will prevail at the EYW and MTH terminals through Tuesday morning, with generally scattered cumulus between 2500 and 3500 feet. Passing showers will be possible, especially at the EYW terminal, but should not result in any significant weather impacts. Surface winds will remain from the east at 11 to 16 knots with gusts around 20 knots. && .CLIMATE... In 2012, the daily record rainfall of 2.66" was recorded at Key West.
