Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Juan PR 930 PM AST Mon Nov 8 2021 .UPDATE...Isolated showers have persisted across the local area this evening, some of the showers are affecting various sections of Puerto Rico, albeit small areas, so the overall rainfall coverage is small at any one time. These isolated to locally scattered, showers are expected to continue for the next few hours over Puerto Rico. However, most of the shower activity is expected over the local waters as the night progresses, with some showers affecting eastern PR and the USVI for brief periods. This is because a patch of moisture, currently just to the east of the local area, is expected to move into the local area late tonight into Tuesday morning. No changes were made to the forecast for Tuesday afternoon, the available moisture will combine with the local and diurnal effects, to cause the development of showers across central into western PR. The temperatures will be near normal tonight and on Tuesday, with overnight lows generally in the 70s across the lower elevations, and in the 60s across the higher elevations. Then the daytime highs will be in the mid to upper 80s in the lower elevations, and in the upper 70s to low 80s across the higher elevations. && .AVIATION...VFR conds expected through the forecast period, but VCSH is expected for brief periods across the local terminals tonight and through 09/12Z. Light and variable winds overnight, which will turn easterly and up to around 10KT or so after 09/13Z, with sea breeze variations. SCT SHRA forecast after 09/17Z for western PR, causing possible VCSH at TJBQ. && .MARINE...Seas up to 4 feet tonight, increasing to 5 feet on Tuesday. Light to moderate winds across the local waters through Wednesday, then increasing up to 20 knots for the latter part of the week onward. Moderate risk of rip currents through Tuesday for northern PR and Culebra, but a high risk of rip currents is expected for those same beaches starting on Tuesday night, as a northwesterly swell starts to invade the local waters. && .PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 430 PM AST Mon Nov 8 2021/ SYNOPSIS... Generally fair weather, though with a typical shower pattern, will continue under stable conditions aloft. SHORT TERM...Tonight through Wednesday... Ridging aloft is expected to persist over the region through at least midweek. A patch of moisture is making its way into the region from the east, with PWAT of 1.5 to 1.7 inches, based on satellite estimates. However, the moisture is expected to remain sequestered in the low levels, with a cap that is unlikely to be any higher than 700 hPa/10k feet, with significantly dry air immediately above, which is likely to limit the impacts over the region. Furthermore, shower activity is still unimpressive in areas already under this airmass. So, a slight increase in activity is possible, but overall conditions are expected to remain generally calm, while retaining the typical shower pattern. Patches of moisture will stream over the region from time to time, remaining mostly within the low levels as with the one currently pushing over the USVI, Vieques, and Culebra. This moisture will help to sustain the typical shower pattern, and similar conditions are likely during each day. LONG TERM...Thursday through Monday... Mid-upper level ridge will continue to dominate the weather conditions in the extended range. This will keep dry and stable conditions aloft as the high-pressure ridge remains over the region. At low levels, a surface high pressure will establish over the Western Atlantic, north of the area, between Thursday and Friday. As the surface high migrates across the north Atlantic waters trade winds will strengthen late in the week into next week. Under this weather pattern, a mixture of fair weather and passing showers during the second part of the week. Then, stronger trade winds during the weekend and early next week will likely result in more frequent passing showers streaming across the local islands. However, no significant rainfall is anticipated as high pressure aloft will prevent the vertical development of most of the showers. AVIATION... Mainly VFR conditions are expected to prevail across all terminals during the next 24 hours. SCT cigs btw FL020-FL050 expected across the USVI/PR terminals through tonight.
