.SYNOPSIS...
Mostly fair weather conditions will prevail for the rest of the
afternoon and evening hours, with a few showers possible in
interior and northwestern Puerto Rico. Satellite and radar imagery
show some clouds and isolated showers approaching the islands from
the east, and a shower or two cannot be entirely ruled out. For
the rest of the week, mostly stable conditions aloft are forecast
for the local area due to a low to mid ridge dominating the
pattern. On Sunday, an amplified upper level trough could deep
into the area and result in some unstable conditions; however,
the activity is expected to remain just south of the islands.
Tranquil marine conditions will prevail today, but tomorrow a
small northerly swell will result in choppy seas.

.SHORT TERM...Rest of Today through Sunday...

A continuing dry pattern was observed during the morning and into
the early afternoon over the local islands. This dry pattern with
stable conditions is expected to prevail for the rest of the
night hours, as some patches of moisture move into the forecast
area, increasing somewhat the potential for shower activity. On
Saturday, given the combination of the slight increase in the
patches of moisture with local and diurnal effects, an increase in
shower activity is forecast, mostly for over northwestern
sections of Puerto Rico in the afternoon hours. This activity
will be limited, however, due to some Saharan dust particles over
the region. Meanwhile, for the rest of the islands a few clouds
with hazy skies will prevail for the day. Once again, warmer
temperatures are forecast over the coastal sections of Puerto Rico
due to the southeasterly component in the winds.

For the last part of the short term period, more afternoon
convection is forecast. In the low levels, a strong building high
pressure located over the central Atlantic will tide the pressure
gradient increasing the winds. The moderate wind flow from the
east will push fragments of moisture over the area, bringing PWAT
values to near climatological normals. This moisture, along with
the local effects, will result in the typical afternoon pattern
over the interior and western sections of Puerto Rico and the
evening passing shower for the U.S. Virgin Islands. In the upper
levels, there is an amplified upper-level trough moving westward
into our area. According to model guidance, in which there is good
agreement, this TUTT is expected to amplify and set just to the
east east, increasing somewhat the instability over the CWA.
However, the presence of the low- to mid-level ridge in the area
will inhibit widespread activity. Nevertheless, the shower
activity in the afternoon hours could result in ponding of water
in roadways and poor drainage areas with the heaviest activity.

.LONG TERM...Monday through Saturday.../issued 425 AM AST Fri Oct
29 2021/

A closed upper-level low is expected to settle near the Windward
Islands on Monday with a strong reflection in the mid-levels in
the form of a closed low as well. However, the mid-level ridge
will be strong enough still to inhibit convective activity across
the area. This changes by Tuesday and Wednesday as the mid and
upper level low retrogrades slightly, closer to the area. This
will be sufficient to displace the mid-level ridge far enough
north. As a result, conditions aloft will become more unstable
and thus more conducive for convective activity to materialize.
Low-level winds will become more east- northeast as a low-level
ridge settles to the north. Moisture is expected to increase to
near normal, with precipitable water values ranging between 1.7
and 2.0 inches. The combination of all of these factors will aid
in the enhancement of overnight and morning shower activity across
portions of the USVI as well as eastern and northeastern portions
of Puerto Rico followed by enhanced afternoon convection across
portions of interior, western, and southwestern Puerto Rico.

Then, by Thursday and lasting through the end of the long term
period, the mid and upper level low is expected to weaken and
this will allow the mid-level ridge to bounce back once again to
result in drier and more stable conditions. As a result, a
decrease in the convective activity can be expected during this
time period.

Tranquil marine conditions will prevail for the rest of the day
and early tomorrow, with seas of up to 5 feet and east-southeast
wind flow between 5 and 10 knots. On early Sunday, a small
northerly swell is forecast to invade the Atlantic offshore waters
and local passages. An increase in winds combined with the small
northerly swell will generate choppy seas up to 6 feet across the
Atlantic exposed waters. Isolated trade wind showers will affect
portions of the local waters from time to time during the next few
days.
