.UPDATE...
After a very active afternoon due to a tropical wave, showers have
diminished across the islands. There still the potential for some
isolated to scattered showers for eastern Puerto Rico and the U.S.
Virgin Islands, but a drier air mass is already evident in Total
Precipitable Water satellite imagery from GOES-16. Additionally,
the observations from St. Marteen have been showing haze and
reduced visibilities since early in the evening. Therefore, hazy
skies are expected to spread across the U.S. Virgin Islands and
Puerto Rico on Sunday.

.AVIATION...
Mainly VFR conditions expected for the terminals. VCSH expected
for USVI/PR terminals through the morning hours. Saharan dust will
cause HZ skies, with some reduction in visibility, especially for
the Leeward and USVI terminals. VCTS may cause TEMPO groups for
TJBQ after 03/17Z due to reduced VIS and low ceilings. Winds
should pick-up after 12Z, coming out of the ESE at 12 to 17 knots.

.MARINE...
Choppy seas due to increasing winds, out of the east southeast at
15 to 20 knots, are expected to prevail through the first half of
the workweek, up to 6 feet until late Sunday. Then, seas should
become hazardous, and small craft advisories will be in effect for
the offshore Atlantic and Caribbean waters, as well as the Anegada
Passage.

For the beaches, the risk of rip current is moderate for most of
the local beaches, and it could increase to high by late Sunday
into Monday.

.PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 508 PM AST Sat Oct 2 2021/

SYNOPSIS...A drier air mass is expected to filter across the
region later tonight into Sunday, as an upper level ridge and a
Saharan Air Layer moves across the northeastern Caribbean.
Moderate to fresh trade winds are expected through next week.
Diurnally induced afternoon showers are expected to develop each
day over portions of western PR, and from streamers downwind of
the islands.

SHORT TERM...Today through Monday...

Scattered thunderstorms and locally numerous showers were
observed across much of the region this afternoon. The doppler
radar estimated between 2-4 inches of rain, and strong gusty winds
were observed across the southern and north-central to
northwestern coast of Puerto Rico. At least through late tonight,
showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop across portions
of the local waters, and some of this activity could reach
portions of eastern and southern PR, as well as across the USVI.
However, a drier air mass is rushing in from the Leeward Islands,
and this could bring fair weather conditions quicker than expected
across the islands.

Through the rest of the short term period, a building mid-to-upper
level ridge and the intrusion of a Saharan Air Layer should
promote overall fair weather conditions and hazy skies. However,
typical afternoon convection is expected to develop over portions
of western PR each day.

LONG TERM...Tuesday through Sunday...From Prev Discussion

A mid to upper level ridge will hold across the local islands much
of the forecast cycle with some weakening expected by the upcoming
weekend. At lower levels, a surface high pressure north of the area
will yield moderate to fresh easterly winds Tue-Wed, becoming gentle
to moderate Thursday and onwards. Under ridge pattern aloft,
precipitable water values are expected to remain below the normal
range through at least Friday. However, as the ridge aloft weakens,
moisture advection is then expected Sat-Sun.

This pattern should keep a seasonable weather conditions, with
mostly fair weather conditions and diurnally induced convection
over western PR each afternoon. Breezy...Tue-Wed. Heat indices
will be into the 100s with temperatures in many areas ranging from
the upper 80s to lower 90s. Some haziness early in the cycle.

AVIATION...Mainly VFR conds expected all terminals next 24 hrs.
Brief MVFR conds due to TSRA/SHRA at TJBQ between 02/18Z and
02/21Z; cannot rule out beyond 02/21Z, w/ convection likely to dam
up in NW Puerto Rico, extending into interior. SHRA/TSRA in east
and south causing VCTS/VCSH, and cannot rule out brief MVFR for
TJSJ/TJPS. Winds generally easterly to 12 knots, with gusty winds
near TSRA. Winds subside overnight, then pick up out of E/ESE
tomorrow.

MARINE...Moderate to locally fresh easterly to southeast winds
will continue through the rest of the weekend across the regional
waters. Choppy seas between 4 to 6 feet are expected to continue
through Monday, building between 5-8 feet by Monday night across
portions of the offshore waters and passages. A high risk of rip
currents will continue through 6 pm this afternoon for the
northwestern beaches of Puerto Rico. A moderate risk of rip
currents is expected for all the islands through Sunday.
