AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Jackson KY 1252 PM EST Tue Feb 9 2021 .UPDATE... Issued at 1120 AM EST TUE FEB 9 2021 Showers have overperformed this morning, but there may finally be a lull this afternoon after the current batch crosses our northern counties. Some of them fell as freezing rain earlier this morning, but temps have warmed now, and the focus shifts to analyzing the new model runs for the upcoming winter storm potential. UPDATE Issued at 645 AM EST TUE FEB 9 2021 Just a quick update to the PoPs and sky cover this morning per the latest radar and satellite trends - addressing the mixed pcpn threat ongoing in the north. Also added in the latest obs and trends for the T/Td grids. These updates have been sent to the NDFD and web servers. && .SHORT TERM...(Today through Wednesday) Issued at 605 AM EST TUE FEB 9 2021 10z sfc analysis shows a generally southwest to northeast frontal boundary still stuck across eastern Kentucky. This will continue to be the focus for over-running pcpn through the week. Some of that is falling on our northern counties this morning with a wintry mix likely occurring. Despite low QPF from these showers, some slippery spots may develop through the morning commute in locations mainly along and north of I-64. For this reason a targeted SPS has been issued in those locations through mid morning. Otherwise, under mostly cloudy conditions, a seasonably mild night is coming to an end with temperatures varying from the mid to upper 20s in the valleys to the mid 30s on some of the ridges. Dewpoints are generally in the upper 20s to lower 30s amid light and variable winds. The models remain in an acceptable level of agreement given the fast flow regime aloft. They all depict Kentucky at the mercy of near-term zonal mid-level flow at the base of a large trough covering much of southern Canada. In time, the flow becomes more southwesterly tonight and Wednesday. Plenty of energy will stream along it and over Kentucky through the short term portion of the forecast - and beyond. The source of most of these impulses will be an open trough slowly approaching the area from the southwest. Overall, though, the pattern for our area does not change much over the next 48 to 72 hours and that is what will lead to our problems. Given the small model spread have again favored the NBM as the starting point for the grids with some leaning toward the CONSShort for PoP details in the near term and through tonight. Sensible weather will feature a very complex forecast unfolding with an extended period of warm air stacked atop cold sfc level air leading to any pcpn that develops being a wintry mix - mainly in the form of freezing rain. In this thermal structure - still slowly establishing itself this morning - some moisture moves through early leading to the light icing potential north this morning before temps climb above freezing and the deeper moisture moves out. Colder air will then continue to filter into the lower levels of the atmosphere for much of the area tonight and Wednesday with the front providing a lifting mechanism for over- running pcpn on increasingly moist southwest flow. Most of this pcpn - especially on Wednesday will fall into the cold dome of air on the other side of the front and result in freezing rain - though some snow will be possible, too, in the far north. This setup continues well past the short term with a series of sfc waves running along the front maintaining the extended wintry pcpn threat. Accordingly, the Winter Storm Watch has been expanded - with a general southward shift in the model trends for the worst of the ice forecast - to the southeast now also encompassing the counties northwest of a Laurel to Pike line. Additionally, the watch was extended out to Friday morning as the prolonged effects of this pattern will linger for much of the work week. Specific snow and ice forecast information for the entirety of this event are detailed in the discussion below. Through it all temperatures will be striated northwest to southeast in the CWA - likely sparing the southeast much of the freezing rain threat. Aside from the near term, terrain based temperature adjustments did not deviate much from the NBM numbers. As for PoPs: mostly adjusted the near term toward radar trends and the CONSShort high- res blended guidance. .LONG TERM...(Wednesday night through Monday) Issued at 400 AM EST TUE FEB 9 2021 The story in the extended will be the winter storm that is expected to hit eastern Kentucky. The majority of the area, generally south of I-64, should be experiencing rain at the beginning of the period. The coldest air to start will be confined to our northernmost counties, which is where we will be seeing a mix of freezing rain, sleet, and snow. As the night wears on, however, the cold air will begin making a southward push, as a large trough of low pressure aloft over southern Canada begins to push southward as well. As the cold air invades further south, the wintry precipitation will follow. By around dawn on Thursday, a swath of freezing rain, sleet, and snow will likely have pushed as far south as the Hal Rogers Parkway in our southwest, and Martin county in our northeast. The frozen precipitation is currently forecast to affect an area generally just south of I-64 down to the Hal Rogers Thursday morning. The baroclinic zone/surface boundary that will be triggering the precip will likely be in place through out the day Thursday, making for an extended period of freezing rain, sleet, and snow across the area. Accumulating snow should be confined mainly to areas along and north of the Mountain Parkway as the atmospheric column should be below freezing. As the large upper trough continues to rotate south and eastward, it will eventually displace the surface boundary/discontinuity responsible for our precip, allowing the messy mix of wintry precip to finally begin moving off to our east Thursday night. By early Friday morning, we should finally be free from the freezing rain, sleet, and snow that will have plagued the area since Wednesday night. Ice accumulations may be significant across a large part of the area, on the order of a quarter of an inch to half an inch or more is some places. Needless to say, roadways across a large part of eastern Kentucky will be quite hazardous from late Wednesday night through early Friday. The worst icing is currently forecast to occur across an area from I-64 southward to the Hal Rogers Parkway and then northeastward over to Pike and Martin counties. Any snow accumulations should be fairly light, on the order of 1 to 2 inches along and north of I-64. Unfortunately, it appears that this even will be dominated by freezing rain and sleet. The general trend in the models has been for the cold air and mixed precip to push further southward into eastern Kentucky, so the forecast was updated accordingly to reflect that. In summary, a significant icing event appears likely across a large part of eastern Kentucky this week. Major impacts from freezing rain are expected. By the end of the week, and into the upcoming weekend, we may also see the coldest air of the season making a major push into our area. Lows in the single digits and teens will not be out of the question across eastern Kentucky Sunday and Monday. On average, our daily and nightly temperatures should be well average across the whole of the extended period. Daily highs should be in the 20s and 30s, with nightly lows in the teens and/or 20s most nights. && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Wednesday afternoon) ISSUED AT 1252 PM EST TUE FEB 9 2021 Initial conditions at TAF issuance were mostly MVFR, with some pockets of VFR. Limitations were mainly due to ceilings. There were also a few showers in the area. The showers are expected to taper off this afternoon, but otherwise, the same scenario should persist into this evening. Will expect conditions to settle to MVFR everywhere tonight, with ceilings then lowering during the night to low end MVFR. Light rain and drizzle is expected to develop across the area during the predawn and morning hours on Wednesday, and then last into the day. Along with the precip will come a descent into IFR conditions.
