.DISCUSSION...
WV/IR imagery continues to show widespread ascent over the area
in the warm advection regime from system over the Gulf. This looks
to continue today resulting in periods of light rain over mainly
southern sections. The sub-freezing air remains bottled up in the
ArkLaMiss Delta region this morning with light rain occurring in
those areas. This is resulting in light glazing, mainly on bridges
and elevated surface. The freezing line will briefly retreat to the
north this afternoon with light rain continuing to the south. /GG/

Prior discussion below:

Today and tonight...
Shallow cold air continues to seep into the region, and has
transitioned much of the region west of I55 and north of I20 to
below freezing temps. With a significant warm mid level still in
place over the region with deep southwesterly flow aloft...precip
is a mix of rain and freezing rain. Have seen some light glazing
intermittently with light -fzra or -fzdz scattered through the
Delta. Temperatures in the Jackson metro have been right around
freezing...but not quite yet on a steady fall. Given the 0.6C
reading at JAN, expanded the winter weather advisory for light
glazing possible on bridges and overpasses. The threat may be
short lived in the morning hours, but the models have been
underestimating the temperatures and prefer to err on the side of
caution for the morning commute. Frontal boundary has dropped
southeast of the FA now, and daytime highs are expected to be in
the 30s and 40s. Portions of the NW will struggle to get above
freezing, just a preview of what is to come. Precip has been
inconsistently modeled for today. Though the sfc boundary has
slipped to the south, there is still southwesterly flow and weak
isentropic ascent resulting in some scattered showers throughout
the day. Given the temperatures...depending on when those showers
move through, there remains a chance for some light fzra
intermittently this morning...and again this evening after sunset.
Bears mentioning that prev warmth may have been preventing some
of the ice up to this point...but the significant lack of a warm
up today, particularly in the northwest is setting the stage for
glazing to occur more quickly should the precip materialize in the
north after sunset. /HJS/

Saturday through late next week...

A period of dangerous and potentially historic winter weather is
expected across much of the area this weekend and into at least the
middle of next week.

This weekend:

The forecast period starts off Saturday with high latitude blocking
over northern Canada keeping an arctic airmass locked in across the
Great Plains and into the Mississippi Valley. Further aloft, active
southwest flow will continue across the Lower Mississippi Valley as
several embedded shortwave troughs swing through. A sprawling 1050mb
arctic high over the Northern Plains will supply a source of shallow
cold air beneath a very strong low-level temperature inversion. The
first of several waves is forecast to move through Saturday morning
and will bring a round of showers to most of the area. Sub-freezing
temperatures will be in place across the Delta and into portions of
the Natchez Trace corridor. As such, light freezing rain will be
possible Saturday morning as showers propagate atop the cold air.
Afternoon high temperatures will remain cold with highs struggling
to reach the mid 30s over the Delta with low to mid 40s over
southeast Mississippi.

A more pronounced shortwave is progged to eject out of northern
Mexico Saturday night and into the area Sunday morning. This wave
will foster yet another round of showers across the area. Continued
low-level cold air advection will support greater coverage of sub-
freezing temperatures Sunday morning with subsequent freezing
rain/sleet possible across much of the CWA outside of the Hwy 98
corridor where temperatures are most likely to stay above freezing.
The GFS and Euro solutions depict a muted QPF response with only
isolated showers while the CMC/ICON and hi-res guidance are
noticeably wetter with upwards of 0.25-0.50" of liquid equivalent
precipitation. Given the discrepancies, have left precipitation
chances in the 30-40% range for now. Close attention will be needed,
however, as a wetter solution would result in more impactful
freezing rain/sleet. Will extend the timing of the limited threat
for ice in the HWO/graphics into Sunday morning and further
adjustments to the area will likely be needed as guidance comes into
better agreement in regards to QPF response. Additional winter
weather advisories for both Saturday and Sunday mornings may be
needed as well.

Sunday high temperatures will likely stay below freezing across much
of the Delta with mid 30s along the Natchez Trace corridor and low
to mid 40s across the I-59 corridor. Will maintain the current
elevated and limited threat areas for dangerous cold across the
Delta this weekend with the main intrusion of arctic air expected
for early next week.

Early next week:

A significant winter storm and intrusion of dangerously cold and
potentially historic arctic air is expected for early next week.

Winter weather threat: A potent shortwave trough will dive through
the Great Basin on Sunday and eject through the Rio Grande Valley
and into the area by Monday. Surface cyclogenesis along a coastal
baroclinic zone will be underway Monday morning with the surface low
lifting northeast through southeast Alabama and western Georgia by
Monday night. Widespread precipitation will overspread the area
Monday morning into the evening hours. At the same time, arctic high
pressure is forecast to drop into the Midwest with a surge of
shallow arctic air under cutting the precipitation. An intense low-
level temperature inversion will remain in place with warm air
advection occuring above the shallow arctic air. This will set the
stage for a mixed bag of precipitation types across the area.
Initially, temperatures will be above freezing over southeast
Mississippi with precipitation starting as a cold rain. Here,
precipitation will gradually transition to freezing rain as colder
air filters in. Further northwest, along the Natchez Trace corridor,
surface temperatures will remain below freezing for the duration of
the event. Precipitation will remain predominately freezing rain
here, but sleet could mix in as the depth of low-level cold air
deepens. And finally, over the Delta, precipitation will likely
start as freezing rain but deeper cold air should allow a greater
mixture of sleet with snow possibly mixed in along the back edge of
the precipitation shield as the temperature inversion eventually
cools below freezing.

The system will be progressive, which will limit overall QPF
amounts. 0.3-0.4" of liquid equivalent is forecast over the Delta
with 0.4-0.6" further southeast across the rest of the area.
However, very cold surface temperatures ranging from the upper 20s
to upper teens will result in very efficient icing and significant
impacts. Freezing rain falling into temperatures well into the 20s
with a sustained northerly wind will result in nearly textbook
conditions for efficient ice accretion on all surfaces, including
roads. Conditions will quickly deteriorate Monday morning with
dangerous travel conditions and roads potentially becoming
impassable. Exact ice and sleet amounts will depend on how much QPF
is realized and the depth of the cold arctic air, but even 0.25" of
ice or 0.5" of sleet with the aforementioned temperatures will be
more than sufficient to cause significant impacts. A subsequent
significant threat area has been added to the HWO/graphics roughly
along and northwest of a Brookhaven to Columbus line and a winter
storm watch will eventually be needed as the event nears.

Dangerous cold: A shallow arctic airmass will continue to surge into
the area Monday night with low temperatures plummeting well into the
teens across much of the area by Tuesday morning with single digits
for portions of the upper Delta. Wind chill values will be brutal
with single digits for most locations outside of the I-59 corridor.
Sub-zero wind chills will also be possible across the upper Delta.
Tuesday high temperatures will stay below freezing along and
northwest of the Natchez Trace corridor with mid to upper 30s over
southeast Mississippi. These values will be dangerously cold and
could potentially shatter records for some locations, see the
climate section below for more historical context. Given the
magnitude of cold air and strong support from model guidance, have
also added a significant threat area for dangerous cold in the
HWO/graphics.

Mid to late next week:

The potential for impactful weather could continue into the mid to
late portion of next week, however forecast confidence is low at
this point owing to model discrepancies with regards to
temperatures. Guidance and their respective ensembles are in strong
agreement that yet another potent shortwave trough will dive through
the Great Basin on Tuesday and eject through the Rio Grande Valley
and into the area Wednesday night into Thursday. This system will be
wetter with ensemble mean QPF in the 0.5-0.75" range, but
aforementioned temperature uncertainty introduces low confidence in
the precipitation type forecast. High latitude blocking over
northern Canada that has kept the arctic airmass locked in is
forecast to break down and allow the core of the arctic air to lift
northeast back into Canada. While the coldest arctic air will
moderate, sufficiently cold air for wintry weather will remain in
close vicinity to the area, if not across portions of the CWA.
Guidance appears too quick to moderate temperatures heading into
Wednesday as the area will remain beneath cloud cover and any
warming will go into melting ice from the Monday winter storm. This
second system will also be arriving quickly on the heels of the
Monday storm which will also limit the magnitude of return flow off
the Gulf, especially given how far south warm air will be shunted.
As such, have kept mention for a chance of freezing rain and sleet
mixed with rain in the forecast for Wednesday night into Thursday
morning. Ultimately, any additional winter weather will be dependent
on 1) how cold we get Tuesday, and 2) how much airmass moderation,
if any, is realized on Wednesday into Thursday. Will hold off on
mention in the HWO/graphics for now, but if a colder scenario is
realized we could be looking at a second winter weather event. /TW/
