.SYNOPSIS...
A cold air mass over Central California will bring freezing low
temperatures to the mountains and desert areas tonight. Areas of
dense fog dense will plague the SJ valley through the morning.
Precipitation chances will increase Tuesday night as a strong
storm system approaches the coast. Moderate to heavy rain and
mountain snow will be possible Wednesday and Thursday.

.DISCUSSION...
Satellite images show widespread low stratus and fog across much
of the San Joaquin Valley. Fog formed early last night with higher
dew points from afternoon clearing and mixing, increasing low
level mixing. Central CA will be on the warm side of a ridge which
will amplify while shifting more inland through Tuesday. Think
some fog may be probable tonight but models show an increase in
subtropical moisture and high clouds which will mitigate the fog
threat. The south end of the valley may also turn out drier due to
breezy south wind developing over the Tehachapi mountains and
downsloping over the south end of the valley tonight and Tuesday.

Model guidance in fair agreement that a significant pattern
change will occur this week as a strong storm system off the coast
brings an extended period of wet weather. Models have been
trending slower with the onset of precipitation. Chances begin on
Tuesday night in the central CA interior. A storm off the Pacific
Northwest coast will slowly dig south due to a rex block in the
East Pacific. Models show the system will tap into subtropical
moisture due to an increasing southwest flow south of the system.
Ensemble means show precipitable water values ranging from
0.75-1.0 inch over central CA which is 1-2 sigmas above seasonal
normals on Wednesday.

A series of shortwaves are progged to impact the west coast
through the end of the week bringing several rounds of
precipitation. A second and colder trough will push southward
over the Pacific Northwest Thursday bringing another period of
widespread precipitation across the central CA Interior. Latest
QPF from Tues-Thursday indicate 0.5-1.5 inch of rain across the SJ
Valley. The Sierra and adjacent foothills are looking at 2 to 6
inches of rainfall possible. Snow levels will start out rather
high at around 7000 feet through Wednesday, but will lower to
around 5000 feet on Thursday and lower Thursday night possibly to
3000 feet by Friday. A Winter Storm Watch has been launched for
the Sierra Nevada from Yosemite NP to Lake Isabella from late
Tuesday night until Sunday afternoon. Rainfall in the Kern
Mountains looks to range from 1 to 3 inches with around 0.5" in
the Desert. Winds will increase Thursday night through Friday with
breezy to windy conditions expected, especially across the Kern
County Mountains. So lots of weather concerns with hazardous
travel conditions looking likely for the coming week.
Precipitation should be diminishing Thursday night as the storm
moves east of the area. A brief dry period on Friday. Before
another weather system brings a threat of precipitation across CA
next weekend. Models show this system may be colder coming out of
Alaska area.

Widespread IFR and and local LIFR conditions in mist/fog across
the San Joaquin Valley through 18z Monday. Otherwise, VFR
conditions will prevail across the central CA interior for the
next 24 hours.

.AIR QUALITY ISSUES...
On Monday December 20 2021... Unhealthy for sensitive groups in
Fresno and Kern Counties.  Fireplace/Wood Stove Burning Status is:
No Burning Unless Registered in Kings... Madera... Merced and
Tulare Counties. No Burning For All in Fresno and Kern Counties.
