* WHEN...For the first Frost Advisory, until 8 AM EDT this 
  morning. For the second Frost Advisory, from midnight tonight 
  to 9 AM EDT Friday.

* IMPACTS...Frost could kill sensitive outdoor vegetation if 
  left uncovered.

.SYNOPSIS...
Cold high pressure moves from Arkansas tonight to be over the
Carolinas by Friday morning while the wind gradually diminishes.
Much below normal temperatures develop across the region tonight and
linger over the area through Friday. A more significant low pressure
system will cross our region Saturday and Saturday night. High
pressure returns for the early part of next week with warmer
temperatures expected through the middle part of the week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 1000 AM EDT Wednesday: Changes this morning are really fairly
minor as grids are mostly in good shape. Watching webcams in the
mountains and they're socked in so hard to tell if there are any
flurries up there, but kept some light rain and, at the very highest
elevations, light snow mention with possibly some very light
accumulation in the highest elevations of the Smokies or TN border
counties. Confidence still high for red flag/dry/windy conditions
today. Other issue will be low temperatures tonight where confidence
is increasing for need for expanded frost/freeze headlines, but will
reevaluate that with the afternoon package.

Otherwise, a cold front, associated with a deep shortwave trough and
a pretty good shot of cold continental air, will move across the
area by afternoon. Despite the return flow, moisture never gets that
deep and only a very shallow convective layer develops. QPF response
remains minimal east of the mountain spine, and thus PoPs remain
below slight-chance there. That said, the latest guidance does show
shallow convection developing just east of our area. Even on the
upwind side, limited moisture and its short duration warrant little
QPF. The mountain PoPs linger thru the morning, where CAA will
result in partially nondiurnal cooling and temps staying in the mid-
30s around the same time. As you probably guessed, the moisture is
too shallow to extend into good ice nucleation temps, and thus any
changeover to snow is not expected to result in any appreciable
accumulation. That said, light accums are possible in the highest
elevations of the Smokies and along the TN border to the north. High
temps will be tricky under the competing effects of downsloping,
sunny skies, CAA, and gustiness, but overall looking likely they'll
make it into the mid-upper 60s across the Piedmont, around 60 for
the foothills, and only into the lower 50s for the mountain valleys.

Very gusty conditions are expected to develop across the area today,
but gusts should remain below advisory criteria for all but some
very high ridges. The combination of marginally low RH, dry (and
drying) fuels, and in particular the breezy to gusty winds has
warranted the issuance of a Red Flag Warning the CWA outside of the
NC mountains. See Fire Wx section below.

Winds taper off this evening outside of the mountains but gusty
winds linger across the mountains. Winds may even go light outside
of the mountains overnight as the pressure gradient relaxes between
the departing cold front and approaching high pressure center.
Freezing temperatures are expected across all the mountains, the I-
40 corridor, and the southern NC Foothills. A Freeze Warning will be
posted for these locations. Forecast lows are now colder outside of
these areas, solidly into the mid 30s. The question is the dry air
mass and how much the winds drop off. Have included patchy frost for
now, but a Frost Advisory would be warranted for much of this area
should winds actually go light. Given the uncertainty, will let the
next shift evaluate, but concerned parties should prepare that frost
is a distinct possibility.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
As of 100 PM Wednesday: After a potentially frosty start to the day
on Friday, sunshine should increasingly mix with encroaching middle
and high level clouds which will be spreading downstream of
developing southern plains system within the westerly flow aloft.
With sfc ridging translating offshore, llvl return flow will
commence, and max temperatures on Friday should rebound about a
category above Thursday's readings, but still anywhere from 5 to 8
degrees below climo.

The inherited sensible weather for Friday night remains pretty much
on track as mainly mountain shower cvrg should blossom by early
Saturday morning, mainly driven by the increasing upglide/upslope
flow thanks to the eastward moving southerly llvl jet max.

It certainly still looks like a washout regionwide on Saturday as a
period of the strongest deep layered forcing and deepest moisture
associated with a stout southern stream s/wv is progged to translate
acrs the cwfa.  The axis of the heaviest QPF is still uncertain with
the model consensus progging different solutions from the Blue Ridge
escarpment to the piedmont, but at this point, many, if not all
locales should pick the heaviest rain accumulation they have seen
since late March.  The progression of a northward moving sfc warm
front will also have to be monitored thoughout the day.  There is
the probability of developing sfc-based strong thunderstorms along
and south of I-85 as well.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 200 PM Wednesday: Dry slot is timed to overspread the region
Saturday night, setting us up for a well mixed, possibly breezy,
post-frontal Sunday with maximum temperatures pretty close to the
late April normal.  Dry NW flow aloft will keep skies sunny for
Monday as sfc ridging axis builds into the region.  Solid widespread
middle and upper 70s are expected from the piedmont to the lower
elevation mountain valleys.  Deep ridging and the warming trend
continues into Tuesday before the onset on llvl return flow moisture
on Wednesday.  Broad frontal zone showers could affect the region by
the very end of the period.

.AVIATION /18Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
At KCLT and Elsewhere: VFR through the period; NW flow moisture
blocked by the mountains may occasionally break into KAVL, and some
VFR Cu exiting the KCLT area but otherwise just some high cirrus
especially late in the period. Front pushing through the area at TAF
time with winds picking up out of the NW and gusty. These will
continue this evening but diminish into the overnight hours for all
but KAVL, where the gusts will continue. Gusts may drop off briefly
late overnight at KAVL but pick up again after daybreak.

Outlook: Dry high pressure returns for Thursday and Friday. A low
pressure system will bring precipitation and possible flight
restrictions on Saturday. Dry high pressure returns for Sunday and
Monday.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Afternoon relatively humidity will drop into the 20 percent range
outside of the NC mountains, with some locations, especially NE GA,
the Upstate, and portions of the Srn NC Piedmont, will drop to 25
percent or less. Land managers have indicated fuel moisture levels
are very dry outside of the NC mountains, but not quite as dry
across the NC mountains. Very gusty winds, along with a wind shift,
will develop as a cold front crosses the area. Therefore, will
upgrade the Fire Wx Watch to a Red Flag Warning.

SC forestry officials have already recognized that conditions
Thursday likely will warrant another Fire Weather Watch that day,
and further coordination with the NC and GA agencies will be
completed prior to that time in consideration of any additional
headlines.

Wetting rain still is not expected until this weekend across
the region.
