Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold. To prevent
freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes they should
be wrapped, drained, or allowed to drip slowly. Those that have
in-ground sprinkler systems should drain them and cover above-
ground pipes to protect them from freezing.

.SHORT TERM...Today...Tonight...and Saturday
Issued at 405 AM CDT Fri May 28 2021

Scattered light rain across central and east central Wisconsin
will end this morning as the upper low exits the southern part of
the state. A little snow may mix in across central Wisconsin.
Clearing skies are expected during the day as drier air advects in
from the 1030 mb surface high centered over Lake Superior. Highs
today will be much warmer than yesterday, but still about 15 to 20
degrees below normal for this time of the year.

The computer models forecast the surface high to move into Wisconsin
tonight, as a sharp upper ridge approaches from Minnesota. Clear
skies, diminishing winds and very dry air are all favorable for
temperatures to fall quickly tonight. In fact the precipitable
water values forecast for tonight are near the all time lows for
late May in the last 70 years of record keeping. Lows in the 20s
are a good bet west of an Iron Mountain to Wausau line. Further
east it will be in the low to mid 30s. Areas near the lake and bay
may escape a frost or freeze but the remainder of the area looks
likely to receive one. Record low temperatures are likely in a few
places.

Saturday will still be a bit cooler than normal, but with sunny
skies and light winds. Highs should be in the 60s except for 50s
near the Lake Michigan shore.

.LONG TERM...Saturday Night Through Thursday

Temperatures will run a several degrees below for the latter half
of the Memorial Day weekend, then temperatures should run closer
to normal for much of next week.

For Saturday night, cloud cover across the north will determine
how far temperatures drop, and how much frost would form. The best
chance for frost would be across far northeast Wisconsin towards
Florence, Forest and northern sections of Marinette and Oconto
counties. Confidence is low to moderate that enough clouds will
make into the area, thus monitor later forecasts to see if low
temperatures may need to be adjusted up or down over the next day.
For Sunday, high temperatures will be in the 60s to around 70. The
normal high for this time of year in the upper 60s to lower 70s
away from Lake Michigan. On Memorial Day, an upper level
disturbance will drop southeast out of Canada, bringing increasing
chances of showers and perhaps a few thunderstorms across the area
during the day. The greatest chances of showers and storms will be
across north-central into far northeast Wisconsin. There is some
uncertainty in the coverage of rain across east-central Wisconsin
as the ECMWF is a tad bit slower.

Tuesday should be a tranquil day while there chances of showers
and a few storms Wednesday and Thursday as weak upper level
disturbances move through the mean flow. Temperatures should be
at or slightly above normal by the end of the work week.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for north-central and northeast
Wisconsin.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Gusty northeast winds and large waves are expected to cause hazardous
swimming conditions at Lake Michigan beaches through this evening.

Unseasonably cold air will produce a frost or freezing temperatures
away from the lake and bay late tonight. Sub freezing temperatures
are expected roughly west of a Crivitz to Keshena to Wautoma line.
Lows in the middle to upper 30s are likely further east. You might
want to consider protecting vegetation or outdoor equipment that
could be damaged by a frost or freeze.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Saturday through Thursday

Patchy frost is possible in far northeast Wisconsin late Saturday
night into early Sunday morning.

...LATE SEASON SNOW ACROSS PART OF CENTRAL WISCONSIN...

A nearly stationary band of wet snow was across the far southern
part of Marathon county and the far northern parts of Wood and
Portage counties. Temperatures are a little above freezing, so any
light snow accumulation will be on the grass. It should dissipate
or change to light rain by 8am.
