.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Wednesday night)

Northwesterly flow aloft prevailed across the region early this
afternoon. 500mb RAP analysis and satellite showed a closed low over
west Texas, with a ridge along the west coast that branched eastward
towards the High Plains. Meanwhile, a shortwave progressed through
the flow above the Pacific Northwest, with cloud cover advancing out
ahead. At 1:30 PM MST, sunny skies were observed, with light west
winds, and temperatures ranging in the upper 40s to upper 50s
across the region.

The upper low moves to eastern Texas tonight, with little change in
pattern for our area. Dry weather continues as temperatures fall
into the 20s across the large majority of the region. Could see
partly cloudy skies at times as the Pacific Northwest shortwave
pushes further inland.

On Wednesday, the aforementioned Pac NW system strengthens and
enters the central and northern Rockies, becoming a closed low in
the process. Clouds increase through the day as a result, while
temperatures climb into the 60s ahead of an approaching cold front.
Overall, a warm and quiet day is expected. However, relative
humidity percentages do fall into the upper teens to upper 20s with
westerly winds gusting 20 to 30 mph. Fortunately, the gustier winds
are not collocated with the lowest relative humidity values; but,
this combination will produce elevated fire weather conditions in
the afternoon for a few hours.

For Wednesday night, the upper closed low travels eastward along the
Canadian border, just north of the Dakotas. The cold front
associated with the system enters the region around or shortly after
midnight. At that time, winds abruptly shift from west to northwest
and an initial burst of strong winds will be possible. Gusty winds
continue through the early morning hours following the frontal
passage. Gusts of 50 mph are forecast, but higher gusts may occur.
There is a slight chance of light rain across the region after
midnight as well, with a brief transition to light snow possible in
eastern Colorado. Not much moisture is anticipated. Otherwise,
temperatures fall into the mid 20s to mid 30s.

.LONG TERM...(Thursday through Monday)

Thursday... The upper level ridge will give way to a trough system
associated with an upper level low along the Canadian border. As
mentioned in previous discussions, the trough is expected to deepen
as it digs southeast with a cold front expected to move through the
area between midnight and sunrise. The Canadian, ECMWF, and GFS have
increased the chance for precipitation along the front Thursday
morning. Currently, the best chance for precipitation appears to be
along and north of I-70. I'm not completely confident we will see
anything, so PoPs are below 15%. A dry slot is expected to advect
into the area immediately behind the front which will keep the 850mb
RH values in the upper teens to 30s. At the surface RH values are
expected to be in the 20% range. Along with the dry air, a tight
pressure gradient along the base of the trough is expected to move
directly over the Tri-State area. This will bring strong winds down
to the surface from the time of frontal passage into the overnight
hours. The forecasted winds have continued to trend upwards with
northwest winds sustained at 20-35 mph and gusts up to 50 mph. With
the high winds, low RH values, and antecedent dry conditions across
the area, the concern for near-critical to critical fire weather
conditions is growing. Blowing dust could also be an impact with
this event. Temperatures are forecasted to be in the upper 30 to mid
40s for highs and drop into the upper teen to mid 20s overnight.

Friday... Guidance is in decent agreement that the upper level low
will be located over NW Iowa with an ~ 870 decameter core. The High
Plains will be on the backside of the trough with another tight
pressure gradient and NW flow as the upper level ridge over the
western CONUS strengthens. The low and trough are expected to
gradually shift east throughout the day with the ridge moving into
the area overnight Friday. Model guidance continues to suggest the
presence of a dry slot over the area with RH values in low to mid
levels ranging in the low teens to low 30s. At the surface, RH
values will range from the mid teens to low 30s. With strong winds
expected to continue throughout the day and dry conditions, near-
critical to critical fire weather conditions are also possible on
Friday. The main area of concern is eastern Colorado and south of
Highway 40 from the Kansas border to Oakley. The winds are currently
forecasted to be sustained from the NW around 15-35 mph with gusts
up to 55 mph. The strongest winds are expected to occur through the
Thursday overnight hours into the afternoon before gradually
decreasing after sunset.

Saturday... The upper level ridge is expected to remain over the
area through the morning hours. Another trough, albeit weaker, is
expected to move southeast over the Tri-State area during the
afternoon. A cold front is forecasted to move across the area during
the afternoon, bringing the potential for moisture throughout the
evening. The best chance for any light snow showers continues to be
west of Highway 385; however, PoPs are remaining low due to a lack
of confidence in the showers actually making it this far east.
Saturday's high temperatures are expected to be in the 40s with
overnight lows in the upper teens to mid 20s.

Sunday... Model guidance has the High Plains on the backside of the
trough with the ridge trying to push back into the region from the
Intermountain West. The ridge will gradually weaken and upper level
winds shift west as a positively-tilted cut-off trough moves
southeast across the northwest CONUS. We are expected to remain dry
on Sunday with highs in the 40s and overnight lows in the upper
teens to low 20s.

Monday... The cut-off trough is currently expected to move across
the High Plains Monday morning. As it moves across the area, the GFS
and ECMWF show it deepening into the Four-Corners region by Monday
evening. The Tri-State area is currently expected to remain dry;
however, things could change as we move closer to next week.
Temperatures on Monday are forecasted to be in the upper 30s to mid
40s for highs and in the upper teens to low 20s for overnight
lows.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Wednesday afternoon)

Vfr conditions are forecast through the TAF period at both KGLD
and KMCK terminals. Mostly clear skies are anticipated, with
westerly winds around 10 knots. LLWS is forecast at KMCK for a few
hours beginning at 12z.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...WEDNESDAY THROUGH TUESDAY...

Strong northwest winds will impact the entire region on Thursday and
Friday, with gusts around 50 mph possible. Patchy blowing dust may
also occur as a result, particularly in eastern Colorado. The strong
winds will combine with low relative humidity to produce near
critical to critical fire weather conditions during the afternoon
hours on both days.
