Hazards remain on track this morning with remote observations
suggesting a few inches have already fallen over portions of the
Park Range overnight. Overall, rates remain below 1/2 inch per
hour so far this morning. We should see intensities increase
closer to 1 inch per hour (at least in the orographically-favored
locations) later this morning as lift increases ahead of the
trough axis. By the late afternoon / evening hours, that dynamic
support wanes pretty quickly...although terrain-driven showers
over the high country will linger through much of the night.
Another trough gains strength as it digs southeast across the Great
Basin on Saturday. This will allow for widespread precipitation
to move across the forecast area Saturday afternoon. This system
will bring with it much colder air. However, initially, low
valleys are expected to remain warm enough for rain to be the
primary precipitation type. Even the low elevations (at least
where precipitation remains) will see a change over to snow as the
surface front moves in from the northwest Saturday night / Sunday
morning. Latest model runs suggest that the greatest energy will
move south of the CWA by Sunday morning as the disturbance
continues to dig south. This leaves much of the forecast area
under slight subsidence by Sunday afternoon / evening with some
lingering showers. All told, it's looking like the southern San
Juans end up with the highest QPF and snowfall amounts (generally
upwards of a foot). Even the lower elevations could gain a trace
to a couple inches once the cold air hits. Thus, decided to pick
the low hanging fruit and issue a Watch for the southern San
Juans. More products will certainly be necessary...but decided to
the give the central / northern zones another cycle to nail down
amounts.
Temperatures remain near to just above above normal in the short
term. However, that will quickly change as the forecast moves
into the later periods with a potent cold front dropping into the
region Saturday night / Sunday morning.

The break in the action will once again be short-lived as a third
winter weather event approaches for the Monday evening-Tuesday
timeframe. Deterministic forecast guidance has shifted slightly
southward with the main plume of moisture with this early-week storm
in today's model cycles. In this particular version of this system,
the heaviest snow and best support end up south of the San Juans,
favoring a lighter snow event for this range and the rest of the
Colorado and Utah ranges. Active west-northwest flow will continue
from Tuesday night through Wednesday, with lingering light snow
drifting through the mountains and cloud cover expected for the
valleys through this timeframe. Expect temperatures to remain below
average for the duration of the long-term period. Forecast
confidence is strikingly high, with all deterministic models as well
as ensemble guidance supporting the weekend storm as well as the
early-midweek light snow event. This is excellent news as we work to
build our snowpack and water supply across the west.

early to mid evening hours before some improvement is found there
in the aforementioned drier air. Another system is quick on the
