* WHAT...Northwest winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts of 55 to 60 mph

  central and south central Nebraska.

* WHEN...From late tonight through Friday afternoon.

* IMPACTS...Damaging winds could blow down trees and power 
  lines. Widespread power outages are possible. Travel could be 
  difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...The initial surge of strong northwest winds
  will occur behind a cold front late tonight. The strongest 
  winds will be mid morning through late afternoon on both 
  Thursday and Friday, with relative lulls expected early Thursday
  morning and again Thursday night into early Friday morning. 
  Even during the relative lulls, wind gusts up to 45 mph will be 
  possible.

  this relatively-brief surge, with locally higher gusts up to 70
  mph possible. After a relative lull in wind speeds Thursday
  morning, another round of strong winds will occur from mid
  morning through early evening, during which peak gusts will
  again top out near 60 mph. Although winds do not appear to be
  quite as strong late Thursday night into Friday, a High Wind
  Watch remains in effect during that time for a good possibility
  of northwesterly gusts 45 to 55 mph. Last but certainly not
  least, it is starting to look more likely that strong winds
  could combine with falling snow to reduce visibility in northern
  and eastern portions of the area late Thursday night into
  Friday. The main area of concern for possible blowing snow
  issues will focus northeast of a Loup City, to Hastings, to
  Superior Nebraska line.

  lines. Scattered power outages are possible. Travel will be 
  difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Although we are in a relative lull in wind
  speeds this morning, another round of strong winds will occur
  from mid morning through early evening, during which peak gusts
  will again top out near 60 mph. There could then be another
  relative lull tonight with wind gusts falling to around 45 to 50
  mph before the wind picks back up late Friday morning and
  afternoon with gusts back to around 50 to 60 mph. Last but
  certainly not least, is that strong winds could combine with
  falling snow to reduce visibility in northern and eastern
  portions of the area late Thursday night into Friday. The main
  area of concern for possible blowing snow issues will focus
  northeast of an Ord, to Grand Island, to Hebron Nebraska line.

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION

.DISCUSSION...(Today through Monday)

The primary forecast concern will center around the high winds
behind the Wednesday night cold front. The NBM is likely too low
with our winds Thursday through Friday and thus generally went
with CONSMOS, which bumped up our northwest winds to 30-40 mph
with gusts of 45 to 55 mph. This is just below high wind criteria
and we will have to keep an eye on how this system evolves as a
high wind headline may be needed if we end up any windier than we
are currently forecasting.

Today through Wednesday...
The big deal in the short term centers around some incredibly nice
weather for mid January. Everyone should see 50s for highs today
and then most areas should be within a few degrees either side of
60 for Wednesday. The record high temperatures for Wednesday
January 13th are 69 in Grand Island and 68 in Hastings. We will
not be quite that warm but the Tri-Cities should be at least
around 60 for a high on Wednesday meaning its a great day to get
outside and get things done. In addition, the wind should be light
through Wednesday and we'll see clear skies today to partly
cloudy skies on Wednesday.

Wednesday Night through Friday...
We'll see a fast moving clipper system track through Wednesday
night with a cold front that will bring cooler temperatures and
strong winds to the area. The temperature drop will really only be
back down to around normal, which means highs in the 30s by
Friday. The bigger issue will be the gusty winds given the strong
pressure gradient and good mixing. There was already some
discussion with neighboring NWS offices regarding the possible
need for a high wind headline Thursday into Friday, but confidence
is just not there yet with most model guidance still a bit below
our 50 kt gust criteria and it's still over 48 hours out. However,
model guidance has been coming in stronger with winds so we will
need to continue to keep a close eye on the possible need for a
high wind watch/warning. The ECMWF EPS model mean max wind gust
for Grand Island on Thursday is currently listed as 48 kts/55 mph.

We will also have a small chance for light precipitation along and
just behind the cold front Wednesday night into Thursday. At this
time it appears to probably be just trace amounts, probably a few
sprinkles and flurries in a few spots.

Saturday through Monday...
We will stay in a cool northwesterly flow pattern with highs
near seasonal norms in the 30s to lower 40s. The NBM is giving us
dry conditions, but can not rule out a light precipitation event
with a passing clipper system.
