.SYNOPSIS...Damp weather will continue for much of Humboldt and
Del Norte today, with some partial sunshine toward Lake County
this afternoon. Another couple rounds of beneficial rain and high
mountain snow will pass by tonight into Saturday, and later Sunday
into Monday.

.DISCUSSION...In the wake of a departing closed upper low dropping
southeastward across southern California this morning, subsidence
with drying and warming aloft is following as an upper level ridge
builds quickly in across the West Coast from the eastern Pacific.
However, extensive low-level moisture is lingering across
northwest California. Onshore flow and isentropic lift focusing
across Humboldt and Del Norte County will take advantage of this
moisture, producing continued periods of light rain or drizzle
through today. Rainfall amounts will be generally light,
accompanied by generally light southerly winds along the Redwood
coast today, but do not expect a particularly pleasant day. While
some spotty light rain may extend down to northwestern Mendocino
and Trinity, areas farther east and southeast of a Fort Bragg to
Weaverville line should be mainly rain-free today. Some partial
sunshine will be possible this afternoon around southeastern
Mendocino, the Trinity Lake vicinity, and particularly around
Lake County. Tonight will see another shortwave trough approach,
with a fast-moving cold front set to pass through from northwest
to southeast early Saturday morning. This will bring a quick shot
of moderate to even briefly heavy precipitation overnight
tonight, transitioning to showers on Saturday. Overall rainfall
amounts will not be anything exciting, ranging from over an inch
in far northern Humboldt and Del NOrte to less than a tenth in
southeast Lake County. Some briefly gusty winds will accompany the
front late tonight over the usual wind- prone Redwood coast
headlands and ridgetops, generally in the 20 to 40 mph range. Have
issued a Winter Wx Advisory for the Scott Mountain Summit
Vicinity, as snow levels will fall with the cold front passage,
dropping below 4000 feet by midday Saturday. Shower activity will
be extensive Saturday morning, but gradually wind down heading
into the afternoon, with an area- wide lull in the rain Saturday
night.
That break in the wet weather may last through Sunday morning for
portions of our area, before the next low-impact storm system
brings more rain. A warm front extending from an area of low-
pressure tracking into southern British Columbia will bring some
deeper moisture and warm air advection Sunday night, especially
toward the Oregon border. Rainfall will be fairly light again
across southeast Mendocino and Lake Counties, while the latest
guidance is pointing toward amounts slightly higher across the
rest of the area; generally 1-2 inches for most of coastal
Humboldt and Del Norte, with up to 3 inches in the mountains of
Del Norte. Another cold front will follow around early Monday
morning, with showers winding down later in the day. While snow
levels on Sunday will start off initially around 4000 feet in
eastern Trinity, overall this system will be warmer, which should
mitigate mountain snow impacts. While there might be some locally
gusty winds Sunday night, overall winds look lighter than with
tonight's system.
After a break around Tuesday into Wednesday, additional periods
of precipitation will continue. The pattern will continue to be
active across the northern Pacific, but with the main storm track
staying to our north. With broad albeit flat ridging persisting
across the eastern Pacific and a longwave trough remaining over
central portions of North America, storm systems will be rather
progressive and low- impact for our area. /AAD

.AVIATION...IR satellite imagery shows fog and low level clouds
developed across the interior valleys this morning due to the recent
rainfall. A short wave upper ridge will build over the NW California
today. However, a patch of moisture streaming across the area will
favor light showers or drizzle during much of the day. Mostly MVFR
to IFR conditions are expected to prevail across the coastal
terminals today. Meanwhile, VFR to MVFR conditions will prevail at
KUKI. Winds will remain light through late tonight as another
frontal system approaches bringing another period of light to
moderate stratiform rain and increasing southerly winds. In
addition, low level winds shear will be possible across the coastal
terminals.

.MARINE...Light to moderate westerly breezes will continue through
tonight, before become southerly as a another frontal system
approaches the region. Southerlies will increase to moderate to
strong breezes on Saturday morning, then quickly turn northerly
after it passes overhead. Northwesterly mid-period swell combined
with westerly short period seas will moves across the waters today.
Another northwest swell will start to build in and combine with the
ongoing swells and short period waves. This will build to around 12
feet at 13 seconds. A short live period of very steep seas around 12
to 14 feet at 10 seconds is expected to moves across the outer
waters during Saturday morning. A Hazardous Watch is hoisted for the
north of Cape Mendocino Saturday morning through afternoon.
