Summary: This weekend's system remains on track to bring
accumulating snow to the Northland. A Winter Storm Watch remains in
effect for portions of the area from Saturday night into Monday
morning. Accumulations exceeding 6 inches are becoming increasingly
likely for areas along and north of U.S. 2. Following this weekend's
system, expect much colder temps next week with periodic chances for
snow.
A lull in the pattern is expected tonight into tomorrow. The clipper
system that brought light snow to the CWA last night is now moving
east through Ontario. To the south, high pressure is propagating
through southern Minnesota and Wisconsin. Cyclonic flow aloft
between these two systems is expected tomorrow, which may touch off
a few light snow showers in the northern portions of the Arrowhead.
CAMs show light QPF across the northern Arrowhead. Therefore,
isolated snow accumulations of an inch or less may be possible,
particularly in far northern Lake County.
Of greater impact will be a strong low pressure system impacting the
CWA from Saturday night to Monday morning. The trend in recent model
runs has been to slow down this system on Saturday night and shift
the area of heaviest snow farther north on Sunday. Expect a large
area of FGEN and favorable omega to develop a synoptic snow band in
the far western CWA on Saturday night. As the center of the sfc low
propagates further east on Sunday morning, this synoptic snow band
will slowly lift across the CWA. This synoptic snow band will
produce the majority of this system's snow as the deformation zone
pivots across the area. However, there will be the potential for an
additional few inches on the backside of this system as the trowal
moves through. Expect snow to come to an end by Monday afternoon.
In terms of snow accumulations, there is some concern about the
intrusion of a dry slot across the southern half of the CWA
throughout the day on Sunday. Model soundings show a potential loss
of low to mid-level saturation, which may limit snow amounts south
of U.S. 2. The CAMs, which are now starting to come in for this
system, also show this dry slot. Regardless, there is still high
confidence for accumulations of at least 2 inches for areas south of
U.S. 2. However, there is some uncertainty regarding higher amounts.
For areas north of U.S. 2, there is increasing confidence for
accumulations exceeding 6 inches. Model guidance continues to show a
strong signal for accumulations of 6 to 10 inches across the
northern half of the CWA. Areas in the higher terrain of the North
Shore may see accumulations exceeding a foot due to enhancement from
Lake Superior and orographic effects. A Winter Storm Watch remains
in effect for these portions of the CWA from Saturday night to
Monday morning due to the likelihood of 6 inches of snow or more. An
upgrade to a warning will likely be needed. However, the watch
wasn't upgraded at this time due to uncertainty about the northern
extent of the dry slot.
Following this weekend's system, a polar airmass will advect into
the CWA. This will result in high temps in the single digits to
teens for the first few days of next week. Low temps early next week
are likely to drop below zero across the CWA with winds chills as
low as -25 on Tuesday morning. Wind Chill Advisories may be needed
for portions of the area on Tuesday morning. Mostly zonal flow aloft
will result in periodic chances for snow next week.

VFR conditions as of issuance time for most of the terminals is
expected to continue through much of the TAF period. Cyclonic
flow aloft has resulted in some MVFR cigs for INL as of issuance
time through Saturday morning, which may linger into early
afternoon. Breezy west to northwest flow is expected throughout
much of the TAF period, easing late tomorrow afternoon and through
the end of the TAF period. A band of -SN will move into the
terminals toward the end of the period, bringing MVFR ceilings and
visibilities to KBRD, though have included VCSH for the remainder
of the terminals after 04z.

Strong west-northwest wind produced by a tight pressure gradient
is producing strong winds tonight over western Lake Superior.
Gusts up to 40 knots are expected along the North Shore and around
the outer Apostle Islands. A Gale Warning remains in effect for
these waters tonight and tomorrow morning, with a Small Craft
Advisory elsewhere. Expect winds to ease tomorrow late morning and
afternoon and shift to the southeast. Winds will once again ramp
up Sunday morning as a strong low pressure system brings heavy
snow to the area. Small Craft Advisories may be needed for Sunday
morning and into the early afternoon. Looking ahead to next week,
strong northwest winds on the backside of this weekend's low
pressure may necessitate additional advisories/warnings across
western Lake Superior.
