* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...A prolonged period of northeast gales to 35
  knots has resulted in high water levels in the western basin of
  Lake Erie. The current water level at Toledo is 81 inches above
  low water datum. Waters levels are expected to reach their peak
  this afternoon. Winds will subside to below gale force by
  Saturday morning, allowing lake levels to fall below 72 inches 
  of low water datum by Saturday morning.

.SYNOPSIS...
A stalled frontal boundary over central Ohio will slowly move
north tonight into northern Ohio. Low pressure over the lower
Missouri River Valley will move east along the front tonight
into the Ohio Valley for Friday, pulling it back south. The low
will depart off the East Coast on Saturday morning and a
residual trough will linger across the region. High pressure
will build from the northwest on Sunday into Monday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
Showers are currently approaching the far western portion of
the forecast area. Rain chances will begin to increase in
western counties over the next few hours and spread east across
the area overnight. No changes needed with this update outside
of making incoming precip chances a bit more progressive for the
next couple of hours.

Previous Discussion...
The area has remained dry with a stalled front over central
Ohio and a surface ridge extending from the north. Colder air to
the north of this front has limited diurnal cumulus development
and skies are mostly sunny for most with some better diurnal
cumulus coverage south of US 30 in Ohio. With low pressure
entering from the west, this front will be slowly lifted north
tonight into northern Ohio. Meanwhile, the low will enter,
bringing increasing clouds tonight, followed by widespread rain
chances for Friday. The low will be supported by an incoming
upper trough moving through the central United States and the
right entrance region of a 130 kt upper jet. This low will bring
Gulf moisture to the area on Friday and with the ample lift
across the region, steady rain should be expected for the first
half of Friday and have 100 PoPs for the entire area with the
low passage. The surface low shifts to the east later in the day
on Friday, moving with the stronger upper jet and the upper
trough then becomes centered over the Great Lakes region. With
this transition, a pocket of drier air may enter the region
around 700 mb, allowing for rain to diminish slightly and have
some lower PoPs entering from late Friday afternoon through the
first half of Friday night. As the upper trough approaches the
area, the upper jet restrengthens and better moisture returns
late Friday night and have PoPs increasing once again with a
residual surface trough around to help with precipitation.
Temperatures will be well below normal on Friday with the rain
across the region limiting heating with highs in the mid 50s to
mid 60s. With the surface low departing to the east, it will
drag today's front south as a cold front and lows on Friday
night will be chilly in the 40s. One other concern with the low
pressure system for Friday will be winds. This stronger surface
low and stronger jet energy aloft will allow for some higher
gusts at the surface. The highest gusts will be downwind of Lake
Erie in Northwest and North Central Ohio, where gusts to 40 or
45 mph will be possible.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
Behind a departing low pressure, scattered showers will begin to
filter across the area on Saturday as positively tilted trough moves
over the Great Lakes region. Showers will continue through much of
Saturday until the areas becomes located on the western side of the
upper level trough, allowing for drier air associated with high
pressure to begin to move over the area. With a persistent cloud
deck and scattered precipitation, temperatures will remain on the
cooler side with highs in the upper 50s to low 60s. Have opted to
keep the chance of thunder out of the forecast on Saturday as models
suggest limited instability across the area. By Saturday night, most
showers should have moves east of the area and lows will drop into
the mid to upper 40s.

A few lingering showers/sprinkles may persist for the far eastern
counties on Sunday morning as high pressure continues to build
southeast over the area. With a much drier airmass moving in, clouds
will become scattered and temperatures will rebound a bit into the
mid 60s, potentially reaching near 70 for the western counties.
Mostly clear skies will persist into the Sunday overnight hours
which will result in temperatures cooling to the mid to upper 40s
across the area.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The aforementioned high pressure will persist through Monday,
allowing for fair weather to continue. High temperatures will
continue to climb, reaching into the low to mid 70s. On Monday night
into Tuesday, an upper level shortwave trough will move across the
area and provide energy for isolated showers to occur. Behind this
shortwave, a trough begins to dig across the central United States,
which will impact the area for the remainder of the long term
forecast. Widespread showers are likely, however there is
uncertainty in the duration as long range models diverge in
agreement on magnitude and location of this trough. The GFS suggests
a closed low aloft will develop, strengthening the surface low and
keeping the area in the warm sector. However, the ECMWF and Canadian
models suggest a positively tilted trough moving a weaker low
pressure northeast through the area. With either forecast, rain
showers are expected for the middle to end of the week and a chance
of thunder cannot be ruled out. Temperatures are expected to
continue to increase throughout the week with highs on Thursday in
the upper 70s to low 80s. Overnight lows will also warm a bit,
reaching into the upper 50s to low 60s most nights.

.AVIATION /06Z Friday THROUGH Tuesday/...
Forecast mainly comprised of deteriorating flight categories
and increasing northeasterly winds with time as a result of an
area of low pressure tracking into the region over the next few
hours. Showers over the western terminals at this hour will
increase in coverage through the morning while spreading
eastward. As the atmospheric column saturates, ceilings will
lower fairly rapidly, and IFR is expected. Visibilities will
vary in precipitation, with IFR also possible here in heavier
showers/rain. With the tightening pressure gradient, the winds
will steadily increase through the period. This will play havoc
with the visibilities as well, especially when there are periods
of time without precipitation. Expect P6SM when rain is not
falling, as BR would be difficult to maintain in strong
turbulent flows at and just off the surface, despite the low
level saturation aspect. Same with the ceilings. Lower ceilings
towards LIFR would be expected if not for the increasing winds,
and expect there would be a lower limit to these values in times
without rain, and think 007-009 is reasonable for this. They
may go slightly lower in rain.

CLE and ERI could see gusts at 30kts or slightly higher.

Outlook...Non-VFR conditions likely in periods of rain through
Saturday night.

.MARINE...
A low pressure system moving east across the Ohio River Valley will
result in hazardous marine conditions through Saturday morning.
Winds from the northeast are expected to increase tonight,
approaching 35 knot Gales by Friday afternoon, and slowly
diminishing to 20 to 30 knot northeasterly winds by Saturday
afternoon.

As a result of winds reaching Gale Force, a Gale Watch has been
issued for all of Lake Erie from Friday morning through Saturday
morning. Ahead of the onset of the Gale Watch, winds from the
northeast will increase to 15 to 25 knots this evening. As a result,
a Small Craft Advisory has been issued for all nearshore zones with
waves expected to build to 3 to 5 feet. An additional Small Craft
Advisory will likely be needed after the near Gales subside on
Saturday morning, which will persist into Sunday morning. Although
the primary concern is the strong winds, the long fetch across Lake
Erie will increase water levels across the western basin. These
levels will need to continue to be monitored for the potential of
any lakeshore flooding. As of now, lower water levels compared to
recent years should allow for water levels to remain below flood
levels.

In conjunction with strong, northeasterly winds across the lake,
waves along the lakeshore will build to 4 to 6 feet, possibly
touching 9 feet at times. These large waves will produce a high
chance for rip currents along the lakeshore. As a result, a beach
hazards statement has been issued for all lakeshore zone beginning
tonight.

Following Saturday, high pressure arrives with generally light flow
anticipated across the lake into Monday, keeping waves minimal and
allowing for a break in marine headlines.
