move off the coast, allowing for winds to briefly become gusty
and allowing for the rainband from earlier to move away. We
have adjusted the forecast to lower some max temps and remove
mention of PoP until after 4 or 5 pm when just a slight chance
will be maintained for the secondary portion of the polar front
/post-frontal trough.

Previous discussion...
Today/Early Evening: A phased, progressive trough digging
across the eastern U.S. with help from a 150 kt polar jet will
drive a polar cold front across the Southeast U.S. today. As is
typical with polar fronts this time of year, the front will
push across the region in two parts as it interacts with the
higher peaks of the Southern Appalachians. The initial wind
shift to the west and northwest has already pushed offshore
behind a developing cold front, while the actual polar front is
starting to move into our northwest tier and is accompanied by
light showers and sprinkles. The stronger part of the front with
the arrival of the colder air mass won't be until late this
afternoon and evening, with winds shifting more northerly.

The band of showers associated with the upper jet and better QG
forcing is in a general weakening trend as anticipated. as the
upper jet begins to pull further away and low level convergence
weakens considerably. With very little CAPE and/or instability,
we don't foresee anything more than slight chance/chance PoP
into the afternoon with the initial activity. After the main
line of showers, or its remnants pushes offshore, expect a risk
for at least isolated showers to redevelop as the second portion
of the cold front approaches from the north. Slight chance pops
were held over Southeast South Carolina through the afternoon
and into the first part of this evening across Southeast Georgia
to account for this possibility. The risk for showers will end
when the leading edge of the polar airmass finally pushes south
and offshore later this evening.

Cloud cover and both the hourly temps and max temps are the more
troublesome parts of the forecast today. On average we look for
mostly cloudy conditions, and max temps will range from the
lower and middle 60s along the northwest tier where there is
limited insolation, to the upper 60s or even a few lower 70s
southeast and east where there should be more insolation.

Tonight: Strong post-frontal cold air advection will occur
overnight as the cold front pushes farther away from the region
and a 1027 hPa polar anticyclone builds southeast out mid/upper
Mississippi Valley. Steady north winds will prevail through the
night which will help drive much a much colder airmass into the
region. Current trends suggest an advective freeze is unlikely this
far to the south with the probabilities of freezing temperatures
occurring across the far interior running <15%. Still, lows from the
mid 30s inland to the upper 30s/near 40 at the coast coupled with
winds 10-15 mph will push wind chills in the upper 20s to mid 30s
for much of the region. While a brief freeze can not be completely
ruled in a few of the normally colder spots just before
daybreak, the very short duration and isolated coverage does
not support the issuance of a Freeze Warning at this time. There
will also be too much wind and lack of meaningful ground skin
moisture to support frost formation.

Lake Winds: North winds will rapidly increase over Lake Moultrie
tonight in the wake of a strong cold front. Winds are expected
to increase to 15-20 kt with gusts to 25 kt by late evening and
persist for much of the night within a strong post-frontal cold
air advection regime. Winds could briefly gust higher at times
based on stability profiles relative to 1000 hPa geostrophic
winds noted on the various 22/00z models. Waves will increase to
1-2 ft with local sets of 3 ft possible across the southern
parts of the lake where the fetch will be the longest. A Lake
Wind Advisory will not be issued with this package per
coordination with WFO CAE, but one will likely be issued later
today once the 12z guidance is reviewed.

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Tuesday: A high amplitude trough will exit off the East Coast,
allowing cold high pressure to build across the Southeast United
States. Despite a full day of sun, temps will be noticeably colder
than the previous day with a northerly wind in place, struggling to
warm to the upper 40s/lower 50s across southeast South Carolina to
mid 50s across southeast Georgia. Winds should also be breezy during
afternoon hours as cold air advection promotes low-lvl mixing,
especially across coastal counties where winds generally peak
between 15-20 mph. Cold high pressure will then become centered over
the Carolinas during the night, leading to clear skies and a north-
northeast wind through the overnight period. The setup will favor
the coldest temps of the week with most areas dipping below the
freezing mark away from immediate beaches. The only exception to
temps remaining above freezing should occur along coastal zones in
southeast Georgia, where sfc winds turn slightly more onshore during
the second half the night. Given high confidence that temps will dip
below freezing for a large portion of the area, a Freeze Watch has
been issued for all zones (with the exception noted above) between
midnight through daybreak Wednesday. Widespread frost is also
anticipated inland late night. In general, low temps should range in
the mid/upper 20s inland to lower 30s away from the beaches. At the
beaches, temps should remain in the mid-upper 30s, warmest in
Georgia.

Wednesday and Thursday: Dry high pressure will remain centered
across the Carolinas Wednesday, then weaken on Thursday well ahead
of a cold front arriving early weekend. The setup should favor
gradually warming conditions through Thursday as onshore winds turn
southwest heading into Thursday. In general, temps should peak in
the mid/upper 50s across most areas Wednesday under a full day of
sun. Locations south of I-16 could peak around 60 degrees. Temps
will once again be cold Wednesday night before high pressure weakens
across the area, with lows ranging in the lower 30s well inland to
upper 30s/lower 40s closer to the coast. Areas of frost are also
possible, mainly well inland. On Thursday, another full day of sun
and eroding high pressure should favor temps that peak in the low-
mid 60s, warmest across southeast Georgia.

&&

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
Weak mid-lvl ridging along with sfc high pressure will shift
offshore Thursday night into Friday as a cold front passes through
the local area. A few showers could accompany the front Friday
morning, but chances of precip should shift offshore by the
afternoon as dry and slightly cooler high pressure spreads across
the area once again during the weekend. Another dry cold front
should shift across the region Sunday into Monday, before a large
area of high pressure expands across the region from the west-
northwest next week.

In regards to temps, the passing cold fronts should only result in
modest changes. In general, high temps should range in the low-mid
60s Friday and Sunday, while remaining slightly cooler during post
fropa days on Saturday and Monday. Overnight lows should generally
range in the mid/upper 30s away from the coast to low/mid 40s at the
beaches during the weekend into early next week.

.AVIATION /18Z MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
MVFR ceilings will impact KCHS and KJZI into this evening as a
polar cold front moves through in two parts. There could still
be a brief period of very light rain or sprinkles until the
second part of the front moves through by 02-03z, but no impacts
would occur. Thus no mention is necessary in the 18Z TAFs. KSAV
could briefly go MVFR early tonight along with a bit of very
light rain or sprinkles, but odds are too low to mention.

All sites will be a little gusty at times this afternoon, before
the gusts become more prevalent tonight into Tuesday.

Extended Aviation Outlook: VFR conditions should prevail at all
terminals mid to late week. However, gusty northerly winds
(15-20 kt) will be possible at the terminals Tuesday afternoon
as high pressure builds across the region behind a departing
cold front.

.MARINE...
The initial surge of winds will impact the marine area during
the early and mid afternoon with the first part of the polar
cold front moving through. NW winds will climb rapidly to 25 or
30 kt for an hour or so, and although this isn't enough for a
Small Craft Advisory, it has prompted the issuance of a Marine
Weather Statement.

Previous discussion...
Through Tonight: West to northwest winds generally 15 kt or less
will dominate the coastal waters today in between a developing
cold front well offshore and the polar cold front and post-
frontal trough that moves through late today and early tonight.

As the polar cold front pushes offshore later today with
conditions quickly becoming hazardous over the waters by
mid/late evening as strong post-frontal cold air advection
interacts with the still relatively warm Atlantic shelf waters.
Winds are expected to reach 25-30 kt over the Charleston and
Georgia offshore waters with frequent gusts around 35 kt per
stability profiles relative to 1000 hPa geostrophic winds and
sea surface temperatures. Given the potential for gales has
increased, a Gale Watch has been posted for these two marine
areas. The Gale Watch will be upgraded to a Gale Warning or
Small Craft Advisory later today once additional model data are
reviewed. Elsewhere, winds of 20-25 kt with gusts to 30 kt are
expected with 20 kt and gusts to 30 kt in the Charleston Harbor.
Small Craft Advisories have been posted for these areas. Seas
will increase to 4-7 ft nearshore waters and 6-8 ft over the
Georgia offshore waters tonight.

Tuesday through Saturday: Hazardous winds/seas will likely extend
across local waters Tuesday morning as strong cold air advection
persists with high pressure building into the region behind a
departing front. Gale force winds will be a concern early Tuesday,
particularly across northern SC and offshore GA waters where
strongest low-lvl mixing occurs. Seas should also build up to 5-8
ft, highest offshore. A Gale Watch remains in effect for northern SC
and offshore GA waters through Tuesday morning. Elsewhere, Small
Craft Advisories will remain in effect through late Tuesday morning
into early Tuesday afternoon. Conditions should gradually improve
Tuesday afternoon through Thursday as the pressure gradient weakens
considerably across local waters while high pressure becomes
centered just inland. However, small craft advisory level conditions
will likely remain across offshore Georgia waters into Wednesday
night due to 6 ft seas. A slight uptick in winds/seas is likely
behind a passing cold front Friday. However, conditions should
remain below small craft advisory levels during the weekend.
