Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Columbia SC 928 AM EST Tue Feb 16 2021 .SYNOPSIS... High pressure and drier air will build over the region today in the wake of the departing low pressure system. Fair weather is expected through Wednesday but will be brief as rain returns to the region Wednesday night through Friday morning with the next weather system. High pressure and drier air are expected for the weekend. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... A tightening pressure gradient between the departing low pressure system and strong high pressure over the middle of the country will lead to breezy conditions through the afternoon. Strong southwesterly winds around 15 to 20 mph with gusts to 30 mph are expected with decreasing clouds through the day aiding in deep mixing. Temperatures will likely fall or hold steady for a few hours this morning with cold advection beneath abundant cloud cover, but eventually skies will clear and sunshine will offset the weak cold advection. High temperatures are expected to range from the mid 50s eastern Midlands to mid to upper 40s, which is below MOS guidance. Tonight...Skies will be mostly clear overnight as high pressure builds over the Ohio Valley and ridge into the Carolinas. Do not think we will see ideal radiational cooling as winds will stay up a bit from the north but continued weak cold advection will allow temperatures to fall into upper 20s and lower 30s as the cooler drier air mass settles over the forecast area. Guidance is clustered and did not deviate much. As temperatures fall below freezing in some locations, isolated black ice concerns may arise if there is still draining water across roadways from recent rains an saturated soils, although with the strong wind and drier air moving in, confidence is limited that this will be an issue. && .SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/... Center of high pressure will be moving over the Ohio River Valley and into the Mid Atlantic over Wednesday morning. Moisture will begin to increase as upper level winds turn SW ahead of another upper trough. A low in the western Gulf will move NE. The high pressure to our northeast will bring us into another wedge pattern, with clouds increasing through the day and surface winds shifting from the north. Showers increase from the south Wednesday afternoon but should remain light as deep moisture has yet to overspread the region. By Thursday morning, column becomes well saturated with PWATs closing in on 1.5 inches. An 850 jet will move over the Upstate around 60kts. Wind shear will be strongest in the morning at 62 m/s. At this time, the low will still be in southern Mississippi. Isentropic lift will increase through the morning with widespread rain by sunrise. The low will continue to move northward, with instability increasing into the afternoon. GFS shows marginal to moderate instability with max 1200 MUCAPE at 15z. Numerous showers and thunderstorms in the late morning and afternoon hours. Maximum lift still looks to be along the SC coast and SE Georgia. With that said, the progress of the wedge will have a large influence, so there is some uncertainty on severity of storms Thursday. && .LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/... The front moves through Friday morning, giving way to drier conditions. Some lingering clouds in the morning prior complete drying as high pressure moves in. Tight pressure gradient will cause for breezy conditions in the afternoon. Winds will become northwesterly with downslope flow promoting more stability. This will be the beginning of the first completely sunny weekend in multiple weeks. While it will be sunny, temperatures will likely be 5-10 degrees below average. More cold air advection through the day will allow for temperatures to dip below freezing in most areas Saturday morning. A tamer weather pattern as winds aloft become zonal. High pressure begins to move offshore Monday morning, with another trough building in from the east. && .AVIATION /14Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/... MVFR conditions in place for all terminals this morning, breaking to VFR later this afternoon. In the wake of the cold front, strong cold advection and some low level moisture are creating a deck of 1500-2000k foot strato-cu and MVFR restrictions across the region. Sufficient dry air and mixing should help clear the deck out this afternoon, so all TAFs go VFR by 17z. Winds will remain strong at 10-15 knots, with gusts up to 25 knots, this morning and into the this evening. A weakening pressure gradient and some cooling should drop winds quickly by 0z tonight. Overnight, conditions will remain VFR, through the end of TAF period, with clear skies and light winds. EXTENDED AVIATION OUTLOOK...Growing confidence in restrictions Wednesday night through Friday as a strong low pressure system crosses the region. && .HYDROLOGY... Rainfall over the past few days combined with reservoir releases will result in continued river flooding on area rivers.
