Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Columbia SC 633 AM EST Sun Feb 14 2021 .SYNOPSIS... Rain and below normal temperatures continue as cold air damming remains in place through the weekend. A brief warm up on Monday makes way for more rain as another low pressure moves through the region Monday night. After some dry weather Tuesday into early Wednesday, the active pattern returns as another strong low pressure system moves in from the west later this week. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... The break in the rain is coming to an end with another round moving in from the southeast. The rain will continue to spread in through the morning, entering the northern end of the forecast area after sunrise. CAMs show some dry spots through the morning, but rain becomes widespread by the afternoon as the weak low pressure in the Gulf moves into southern Georgia. PWATs increase to around 1.2-1.4 inches, with highest amounts in the eastern Midlands. Thus, some moderate to heavy showers possible, mainly in the afternoon, in addition to the intermittent drizzle. While instability will be weak, can't rule out a stray thunderstorm in the easternmost CWA. Another .75 to 1 inch of rain through the forecast period expected. After sunset, showers will diminish with gradual upper level drying through the evening as the low pressure moves east offshore and broadens. Lower levels will continue to be saturated into Monday morning with the wedge still hanging on. Highs and lows similar to yesterday with only a few degrees of warming and cooling; mid and low 40s for highs and upper 30s and mid 40s for overnight lows. && .SHORT TERM /MONDAY THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/... A brief respite from the rainy pattern is expected on Monday as the forecast area will be in the wake of the departing system lifting away from the Mid-Atlantic coast and the next one developing over the lower Mississippi Valley. The CAD wedge is expected to remain in place, although due to a generally shallow moisture layer, not very much precipitation it may weaken a bit and allow for some movement of temperatures on Monday. Large spread in the MOS Guidance for highs with temperatures at Columbia ranging from 49 (MET) to 60 (MAV). Climatologically speaking, these CAD wedges are hard to break without a strong southerly flow to erode it, so will again lean towards the cooler MET guidance given extensive cloud cover and some possible light showers, especially in the morning hours. Late Monday afternoon into Monday evening, surface low pressure will develop and deepen over the lower Mississippi Valley and lift northeastward along the I-85 corridor Monday night. Strong moisture transport into the region aided by a 50-60 knot 850mb low level jet will allow PWATs to peak around 1.5 inches which is nearly 250 percent of normal. The CAD wedge may break across the eastern Midlands with increasing southerly flow ahead of an approaching cold front but it is uncertain if it will break across the central and western Midlands. There remains a slight chance of thunderstorms across the region Monday night ahead of the cold front, although they may be elevated atop the low level wedge for much of the area, but the eastern Midlands may have a chance at an isolated strong storm if the wedge breaks there. The surface low will lift away from the region on Tuesday with chances of rain diminishing from west to east through the morning hours as drier air works into the region from the west behind the cold front. There is not much cold air behind the front, in fact temperatures on Tuesday are expected to be warmer than Monday due to the CAD wedge conditions, whereas a breezy day is expected Tuesday with southwesterly winds which will support high temps ranging from the mid 50s west to lower to mid 60s east. Some cool advection Tuesday night under mostly clear skies will yield lows in the lower to mid 30s west and mid to upper 30s east. && .LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/... The active weather pattern we have been in will continue through the end of the week. Wednesday looks to be a dry day with generally low atmospheric moisture in place initially but PWATs will be rising through the afternoon into Wednesday night as strong southwesterly flow develops. A digging upper trough over the center of the country will induce surface low pressure development along the Gulf Coast late Wednesday and the low will rapidly deepen and begin lifting northeastward Wednesday night into Thursday. PWATs will rapidly increase across the forecast area by 12z Thursday to just under 1.5 inches which is very high for this time of year and chances of rain will increase through the night becoming categorical. A surface ridge will also strengthen over New England and the Mid- Atlantic setting up another potential CAD wedge over the forecast area. Confidence is limited in how strong this wedge will be as the strong low pressure system lifts up the spine of the Appalachians on Thursday with a warm front also shifting northward which is likely to create a sharp temperature gradient over the area. As low pressure moves through the forecast area by Thursday night the cold front will move through bringing another round of rain to the region but significant rainfall is not expected at this time, with mainly a half inch or so rain expected. Instability looks limited at this time but if the warm front is able to push deeper into the forecast area, thunderstorms may be possible and this will need to be monitored with time. The upper trough will cross the area on Friday with much drier air arriving from the west and chances of rain will lower through midday with no rain chances by evening. Upper level flow will become zonal westerly on Saturday with surface high pressure building into the region. Temperatures will be near to above normal Wed-Fri and fall back slightly below normal by Saturday. && .AVIATION /12Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/... IFR conditions will gradually diminish to LIFR once again this afternoon as deeper moisture moves into the area. The wedge of cold air is firmly in place through the TAF period, with an almost unchanging pattern. Rain will become widespread later this afternoon, with more moisture moving in from the southwest as a weak low moves in from the Gulf. Rain will be moderate to heavy at times, bringing visibilities down to IFR to LIFR range. Some brief periods of MVFR possible during breaks in showers. At present, ceilings are mainly IFR, however will likely lower again late afternoon. EXTENDED AVIATION OUTLOOK... Moisture and unsettled weather will continue to cause flight restrictions into Tuesday. Rain returns Wednesday night into Thursday with some restrictions possible. && .HYDROLOGY...
