What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this winter storm warning went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Billings, MT wrote its last area forecast discussion before this winter storm warning went out at Feb 4, 2:44 AM MST, 6 hours 44 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Feb 4, 2:44 AM MST, 6 hours 44 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Billings MT
244 AM MST Thu Feb 4 2021

.DISCUSSION...
Today through Sunday...

An unstable NW flow over the region will result in some lingering
snow showers over mountains and southeast Montana this morning.
Otherwise look for windy conditions across the area, strongest
near the foothills of south central Montana (Livingston, Big
Timber, Harlowton). Highs will be seasonal reaching the 30s to
lower 40s. Upper impulses in the flow aloft will produce some snow
over the western high country this evening, but the big story is
the invading cold front that will sweep into the high plains
tonight and Friday.

The cold air will back door into the area from the northeast late
tonight into Friday, and then push west toward the mountains
during the day. There appears to be a strong convergent area that
may form over our central or western zones, including Billings.
But at any rate the cold air and moist mid level flow will persist
through the weekend.

Thus, we remain confident in an extended period of snow and much
colder temperatures for the region. We will leave the Winter Storm
Watch in place until we can sort out the details with confidence.
We continue to keep PoPs well above our model guidance for most of
the area through the weekend as this type of pattern (moist
northwest flow over a cold air) is typically underdone by models.
There will likely be bands of snow that develop that could produce
moderate to heavy snow at times Friday through Sunday, but snow
should be persistent and continue to gradually pile up for many
areas. By Sunday afternoon, the cold air over the plains will
become deep enough to limit dendritic growth and therefore any
significant additional accumulation.

We believe 5 to 8 inches of snowfall will be common for the lower
elevations by Sunday. Higher amounts are possible due to banding
and favored upslope areas in the foothills. A persistent west to
northwest moist flow over the mountains may result in 12-18 inches
on favored slopes in the high country.

Travel will become hazardous during this time with slick and
snowpacked roads, limited visibility. Brutally cold temperatures
will threaten those not dressed for the weather, as well as young
livestock. Highs will drop from the 30s Friday to the single
digits by Sunday. Overnight lows will be in the teens to single
digits below zero. BT

Monday through Thursday...

Area remains locked in a deep freeze Monday through Wednesday with
temperatures holding in the single digits above and below zero for
high temperatures and lows in the teens below zero for lows. The
ECMWF ensembles are going colder than the GFS ensembles with the
latest run by about 10 degrees, so still a good deal of
uncertainty with exactly how cold its going to get. However normal
highs are in the mid 30s so whether its -8, +8 or 18 degrees early
next week, its still going to be very cold. With the cold air in
place and northwest flow aloft expect to continue to see periods
of light snow at least Monday and Tuesday, and possibly Wednesday
as well, as weak moisture advection gets wrung out by the cold
surface airmass. This light snow won't amount to more than an inch
in 24 hours as it will be composed of non-dendrite flakes.

A kicker system arrives in the PacNW late Wednesday to begin a
slow warming trend toward the end of the week as winds turn
westerly/downslope. Will have to keep an eye on threat of blowing
snow for western foothills middle to late next week as those
warmer winds develop. Chambers

&&

.AVIATION...

Isolated to scattered snow showers will continue through 16z this
morning over southern mountains and foothills locations. Expect
local IFR conditions and mountain obscuration in these areas with
snow showers, including KSHR and KLVM. By mid morning expect VFR
conditions to prevail, continuing through late afternoon. By late
afternoon another round of snow will develop as a cold front moves
into the area. Expect occasional IFR conditions to develop over
the western mountains around sunset, with snow and lower flight
conditions spreading south and east through the evening.

West to southwest winds will increase this morning over the
western foothills with gusts to 35kts through the afternoon and
evening hours, including KLVM. Winds will diminish as the cold
front moves through. Chambers
