.SYNOPSIS...
Cloudy skies with light rain showers expected this afternoon and
evening ahead of an approaching cold front. Rain showers change to
snow overnight as the cold front sweeps across the area. Colder air
behind the front will bring widespread snow showers and windy
conditions into Friday, with accumulating lake effect snow east and
southeast off both lakes which will last into Saturday.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Weak sfc low will advance east passing by just to our north this
evening and tonight. As this occurs, a band of very light
precipitation (showers) will advance into and across Western NY just
ahead of the cold front. All precipitation will be in the
liquid form until the cold front moves through tonight. Once
this band of light precipitation works through this afternoon
there likely will be a brief lull in the precipitation as the
dry slot work into and across the Lower Lakes. Otherwise,
rainfall amounts will likely remain on the light side with less
than a tenth of an inch anticipated.
Tonight, expect the cold front to enter Western NY around midnight
with a much colder air mass spilling in across the Lower Lakes
sending H850 temps down to -8C/-9C which will then encouraging
a lake response. Look for precipitation to change over to snow
beginning first across the higher terrain with 1 to 2 inches of
accumulation possible across the interior sections of the
western Southern Tier and the Tug Hill/western Dacks. Might even
see a few isolated spots hit 3 inches just before daybreak.
Expect a mix of rain and snow across the lower elevations before
the change over to all snow. Winds will also ramp up behind the
front with WNW'erly winds gusting up to 30 to 35 mph which may
create areas of blowing snow in the locations mentioned above.
In terms of temperatures, look for lows to fall back into the mid
20s to lower 30s across the area just before daybreak.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
...Accumulating lake snows for northwest flow areas Friday into
Saturday morning...
The passage of a sharp mid level trough Friday will generate a well
aligned 290-300 flow of -10 to -12c H85 air that will be more than
cold enough to support significant instability over the 10c lakes.
The resulting deep cyclonic flow will include a lake induced
equilibrium level over 10kft...particularly over Lake Erie where a
solid 5kft deep snow dendritic growth zone (DGZ) will be in place.
An upstream connection to Lake Huron is also expected for the LES
off Lk Erie...so the airmass will be more primed than that for Lk
Ontario. The orthogonal flow to the Chautauqua ridge will also help
to enhance local lift so that significant 24-30 hr snowfall accums
of a foot or so will be possible. Given -10c hgts of 4-6kft and the
+10kft...lake induced thundersnow cannot be ruled out...but will
hold off with inserting into grids until a connection becomes more
evident. A winter storm watch has thus been issued for Chautauqua
county where the upstream connection is being targeted.
Winter weather advisories will be likely for late tonight into
Saturday morning for southern Erie and Cattaraugus counties...as
well as for sites east-southeast of Lake Ontario.
For the remainder of western New York...Friday will feature gusty
winds of 30-40 mph that will generate wind chill temps in the teens
and lower 20s that will be accompanied by some snow showers that
could accumulate up to an inch or two. A 40kt low level jet that
will be responsible for the gusty winds could produce similar wind
gusts across the higher terrain...mainly in the Finger Lakes
region...so its not out of the question that a wind advisory could
be issued for that area in a later package.
As the sfc pressure gradient relaxes and the aforementioned LL jet
exits the region Friday night...wind speeds at the sfc will slowly
drop off. The coverage for the lake snow showers will start to
diminish...although accumulating snows will persist southeast of
both lakes.
As a sfc based ridge moves across the region on Saturday...a
lowering cap and shrinking DGZ will encourage lake snows to continue
to diminish in intensity and coverage with only minimal additional
snow accums. Outside of the lake snow showers...partly sunny weather
should return. It will remain chilly through with temps remaining
firmly below normal in the low to mid 30s.
Light snow will overspread at least the western counties Saturday
night ahead of the next synoptic system.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Sunday through Monday the guidance suite is coming into better
agreement on dropping a fairly potent shortwave through the backside
of the mean upper level trough across our region...with this feature
eventually carving out a small closed low over New York State and/or
New England by Monday...while also helping to deepen the larger-
scale upper level trough. Meanwhile at the surface...an attendant
elongated surface wave will slide over or just south of our region
on Sunday...before redeveloping off the New England coastline on
Monday.
The above developments will result in a good chance for a general
light snowfall developing across our area Sunday into Sunday night.
PoPs have thus been raised substantially from continuity to account
for this...and can foresee a need to raise these even further in
later packages should current model trends persist. As the surface
low redevelops off the New England coastline later Sunday night and
Monday...a cyclonic northwesterly flow of colder air will develop
across our region and lead to the development of areas of lake
effect snow to the southeast of both lakes...along with a few more
synoptic snow showers elsewhere.
After that the guidance diverges considerably on the evolution of
the main synoptic features as we head through Tuesday and Wednesday.
This being said though...the overall cyclonic flow and seasonably
cold temperatures aloft should continue to favor a continued
potential for some nuisance lake snows southeast of the lakes
through Tuesday...with this gradually lowering by midweek as surface-
based ridging and milder air aloft begins to impinge upon the area.
As for temperatures...expect these to average out solidly below
normal through the period...with daily highs running mostly in the
30s...and nightly lows largely ranging through the 20s.

.AVIATION /18Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/... VFR/MVFR CIGS will
deteriorate through the remainder of the day with IFR developing
across Western NY by late this afternoon/early evening, first
over the higher terrain of the western Southern Tier, followed
by the Niagara Frontier.
Widespread IFR/MVFR conditions this evening will become IFR at all
terminals, with areas of LIFR for the overnight. Rain showers will
transition to snow showers during the second half of tonight, with
westerly winds gusting as high as 20-25 knots by later tonight.
Outlook...
Friday and Saturday...Areas of MVFR/IFR in lake effect snow showers.
Sunday and Tuesday...Mainly VFR. A chance of rain or snow
showers.

Winds will picks up ahead of a cold front today enough to warrant a
round of Small Craft Advisories by tonight. High end advisory
conditions then will develop behind the passage of a cold front on
Friday and into the first half of the weekend as a west northwest
flow develops. Gale force winds gusts are possible during this time
as well. Hence, Small Craft Advisories have been hoisted for all
nearshore zones, with the exception of the Upper Niagara River and
Buffalo Harbor. General timing for the SCAs range from early this
evening through Saturday morning for Lake Erie, and from late this
evening through the first half of Saturday night for Lake Ontario.
