.SYNOPSIS...
A warm front will move quickly northeast across the area through
early this morning with a chance of a brief period of light snow or
mixed precipitation for the North Country early this morning. A
significant warming trend starting this morning into the first half
of the weekend is expected ahead of a strong cold front that will
cross the region on Saturday. Strong winds are expected for Saturday.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
Very light precipitation (mostly snow) over the North Country is
struggling to reach the ground as the band of precip continues
to move northeast. This band of precip has struggled all evening
and into the overnight to produce snow that reaches the ground
due to drier low levels. Sporadic reports of a trace to a tenth
of an inch of snowfall fell earlier from the KROC area to the North
Country. The back edge of the reflectivity is currently over
the the eastern end of Lake Ontario and Oswego County, and will
continue to move northeast at a fairly quick pace.
The weak warm front behind this band of precip has made it to the
south shore of Lake Ontario. Temperatures have slowly risen over
most of the WNY area, though some temps still remain at or below
freezing.
With the overnight passage of the warm front, temperatures will
continue to slowly rise through the early morning hours, and those
rises continue into the daytime on Friday. This results in highs
catapulting above normal as we enter the warm sector.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
...DAMAGING WINDS POSSIBLE SATURDAY...
This afternoon Water Vapor Imagery displays the two upper level
shortwaves...that will phase over the Rockies and eventually aid in
deepening a strong surface low pressure over the Great Lakes. This
first shortwave is digging along the central California coastline,
while the second is racing southward within a 150 knot upper level
jet just off the PAC NW coastline.
These two shortwaves will deepen an upper level trough over the
Plains, that along with a deep stratospheric intrusion of air as
noted by 1.5 PV surface dropping down to near 600 mb, will deepen a
surface low...one that will be near 992mb Friday Night near KS/MO to
the mid 980s mb near Lake Michigan Saturday morning and then sub 980
mb as it tracks to near James Bay Saturday evening.
Southeast winds will increase Friday Night ahead of this maturing
storm system with these winds increasing the air temperature through
the night. Early lows in the 30s and 40s will be replace by air
temperatures in the 40s, and even upper 50s across the western Lake
Plain by dawn.
Ahead of this cold front Saturday isentropic lift rain showers will
advance across our region. A decent amount of instability develops
aloft, with MU CAPE values of several hundred J/KG suggesting that
there will be a slight chance for thunderstorms. There is concern
that any thunderstorms, or line of convective showers could tap into
the strong LLJ of 70 knots just above the surface. Initial burst of
higher winds from these storms early Saturday ahead of the High Wind
Watch cannot be ruled out. Temperatures Saturday could exceed daily
records as southerly winds and 850 hPa temperatures near +10 to +12C
support highs in the low to mid 60s across the Lake Plain...this
before the cold front pushes through. Record highs for our three
climate sites are found within the climate section below.
The moisture plume is not too deep with this event, and the fast
moving nature of the cold front will likely keep rainfall amounts
manageable with a half to one inch of rainfall possible. Colder air
behind this front will change the rain showers to snow Saturday
Night, with just a limited lake response mainly east of Lake Ontario
Saturday Night. Temperatures late Saturday Night will dip back down
to near freezing, to inland below freezing.
Strong Winds...
The main period of stronger synoptic winds across our region will
coincide with the arrival of a mid level dry slot mid afternoon
Saturday, and then continue through the late afternoon and evening
with strong cold air advection (850 hPa temperatures dropping from
+10 to +12C to -7 to -8C). Driving this dry slot will be the
deepening sub 980 mb surface low that is taking a classic track to
our west and north for high wind events. The low level jet of near
70 knots 2 to 3K feet above the surface will support strong and
damaging winds through the afternoon and evening hours.
Both the NAEFS and ECMWF ensemble members bring the core of a near
+4SD 850 hPa jet over Lake Erie Saturday afternoon and then over the
eastern waters of Lake Ontario Saturday evening. Surface wind gusts
could follow a similar peak, near the late afternoon across WNY and
Saturday evening east of Lake Ontario. More specific details are to
come, as subtle model differences in timing and placement hinder
forecast confidence at this time.
Additional strong forcing includes isallobaric pressure rises of 9
mb/3 hrs over the Lakes within the strong CAA. CIPS analogs from the
00Z run highlighted several notable recent high wind events that
have a similar weather pattern including January 9, 2008, December
28th 2008 and December 25th 2014. This along with the aforementioned
synoptic and kinematic setup and pattern recognition continues the
confidence for a high wind potential for Saturday.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Lake effect snow showers Sunday morning will continue to peter out,
despite the upper and mid level troughs crossing overhead of the
area. Then, an expansive area of surface high pressure spanning
across the southern Mississippi Valley will nudge northeast into the
Ohio Valley Sunday afternoon. This surface high will stall across
much of the eastern half of the contiguous United States through
Wednesday. Overall, starting Sunday afternoon and lasting through
Wednesday weather will remain on the dry and mild.
The next time of concern will appear late in the forecast for
Wednesday night through Thursday with the next system. As it appears
currently, the upper level trough responsible for this system will
cross the western half of the CONUS through the mid section of the
week and support a Colorado Low form Wednesday before pushing
northeast across the Upper Great Lakes and into the Canadian
providence of Ontario Thursday, all the while deepening. This will
cause the attendant surface features to cross overhead starting
Wednesday night through Thursday, supporting a chance of rain
showers throughout this time. More specific details are to come, as
subtle model differences in timing and placement hinder forecast
confidence at this time.
Otherwise, temperatures throughout this period will remain above
normal.

A strong area of low pressure will track across the central Great
Lakes and into Canada on Saturday. With this storm, a strong cold
front will cross the lakes on Saturday as well. The strength and
track of this storm system will likely cause strong winds on all
marine zones.

Strong low pressure will pass to the north and west of the area
Saturday afternoon and a nearly ideal track to produce strong
winds on the Lower Great Lakes. Additionally strong surface high
pressure will drop across the Southern Plains, increasing the
pressure gradient across the eastern Great Lakes.
Southwest winds near storm force will produce a seiche on Lake
Erie, and will likely push the lake level at Buffalo over 9 feet
above low water datum. This would result in lakeshore flooding
along the Lake Erie shore and Upper Niagara River, including
locations such as Dunkirk Harbor, Canalside, Grand Island, and
Cayuga Island in Niagara Falls.
The strong west to southwest storm force winds on Lake Ontario
and very high wave action may result in lakeshore flooding at
the east end of the lake, including bays, inlets, and other
flood prone areas.
