Cold front continues moving offshore. Windy and cooler today,
then diminishing wind tonight and Monday. A warm front may
bring limited chances for precipitation Wednesday. Even milder
temperatures and continued largely dry weather expected for late
in the week, ahead of a cold frontal passage later Friday or
early in the weekend.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...

630 AM Update

Temps coming down a bit slower than expected. Have adjusted
temperatures in the near-term to fall a bit slower as the front
exits the region. Otherwise the previous forecast is on track.
Showers are now clear and Cape Cod and skies have begun to clear
over western MA. This clearing will spread eastward throughout
the morning. See previous discussion for additional details.

Previous Discussion

Winds have diminished, and so we will end the wind advisory
with this forecast package.

Cold front that moved through overnight will move farther offshore.
Lingering showers over the Cape and Islands will move offshore with
the cold front this morning. Clearing skies behind the front had
reached Central NY as of 2 AM and will continue to move east this
morning. The clearing line extrapolates to the CT Valley around 6
AM, and to Eastern MA/RI around 9 AM, and finally to the
Cape/Islands around midday.

A trailing upper shortwave sweeps overhead toward midday. This could
generate some additional clouds, but the airmass will be fairly dry
so instead expect Mostly clear skies through the day. High pressure
over the Ohio Valley and South will build over Southern New England.
Subsidence with this high will support the clearing trend.

With a mixed layer up to about 900-mb, expect to tap temps at that
level near minus 3. This will support max surface temps in the 40s.
Winds in the mixed layer will be 25 to 30 kt/30 to 35 mph this
morning...then 20 to 25 kt/25 to 30 mph this afternoon. So expect
gusty winds today but showing a diminishing trend through
afternoon.

High pressure builds over the Southern USA. Low pressure stays to
our north over Canada.

Details...

Tonight and Monday...

Dry weather through the period. The airmass remains subsidence
through Monday. With high pressure to the south and low pressure to
the north, the resulting pressure gradient over Southern New England
will keep the air moving, preventing any radiational cooling.

Dew points in the 20s will maintain min temps tonight in the mid to
upper 20s inland and the 30s along the coast. Milder air starts
moving in Monday, which will restrict the depth of mixing. However,
temperatures in the near-surface layer will be warm enough to
support max sfc temps in the upper 40s and lower 50. Winds in the
mixed layer will be around 20 kt, so expect west-southwest winds
Monday with gusts near 20 kt.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Highlights

* Mild and dry weather prevails at least until Wed nite/early Thurs.
  Highs commonly in the upper 40s to lower 50s with lows around or
  above freezing each day.

* Warm front Wed nite/early Thurs may bring round of light rain.

* Even milder air returns Thurs, highs some 10 to 15 degrees above
  normal!

* Unsettled Sat with better chances for precip; uncertainty on
  precip type but odds favor wetter vs wintry conditions.

Tuesday through Thursday

After a mild Monday, anticylonic flow associated with high
pressure building in from the west will induce a northwest flow
over New England. This will result in fairly strong cold air
advection aloft on Tuesday that will bring temperatures back
down closer to (but still considerably above) normal for mid-
December. Temperatures around -1C at 925 hPa will support high
temperatures in the upper 40s to low 50s at the surface. A very
dry column with PWATs around 0.25 inches will keep the skies
sunny.

On Wednesday high pressure shifts east of southern New England
bringing a return flow from the south. As warmer air from the south
over runs the relatively cooler air over land we'll increasing
cloudiness throughout the day on Wednesday. Southerly flow and WAA
in the low-level may not warm the atmosphere fast enough to see and
noticeable temperatures difference between Tuesday and Wednesday.
Thus expect Wednesday to have similar temperatures in the upper
40s to low 50s. Ensemble/deterministic model guidance also
suggesting a low chance for some WAA related showers,
particularly across the northern tier of southern New England.

By Thursday afternoon, persistent deep southwest flow aloft will
bring temperatures at 925 hPa above 10C. This could support
afternoon high temperatures at the surface near 60 degrees. This
would be 15-20 degrees above normal for southern New England in mid-
December! Model guidance is also hinting at some drier air intruding
into the region on Thursday that would support decreased cloud cover
and more surface heating. In this event we'd have the
opportunity to break what should be a fairly strong low-
level inversion. Should this happen we could see a period of gusty
winds on Thursday afternoon as a 50 knot jet at 925 hPa will be
hovering over southern New England.

Friday and Saturday

Temperatures return to normal late week as a weak cold front pushes
through southern New England. This front also has a low chance to
produce some showers on Friday. A more robust low-pressure
system approaches the northeast early next weekend bringing our
next chance for substantial precipitation and perhaps even some
snow. Stay tuned for details!

of Nantucket. Drier air moves in during the morning bringing

30 kt in the afternoon. Seas 5 to 10 feet early, diminishing to 5-8
feet in the afternoon. Gale Warnings continue to mid morning, then
plan to convert to Small craft Advisory for the remainder of the day.
