possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or
evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat
stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when
possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational
Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent
rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone
overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.

.SYNOPSIS...
Weak low pressure south of New England will bring a few showers
overnight. The low pressure pulls away Tuesday with warmer and very
humid conditions, but still a risk of a shower or thunderstorm,
especially out west. Oppressive heat and humidity for Wednesday
through Friday with afternoon heat indices in the interior
around the upper 90s to low 100s. The heat and humidity will
also lead to scattered thunderstorms each afternoon, but not a
washout. The oppressive heat and humidity breaks by the weekend
with a cold frontal passage, which brings more seasonable
temperatures and lower humidity levels.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
955 PM Update:

Increased PoPs and QPF for tonight across eastern and northeast
MA, essentially a nowcast of rain band seen on composite radar
mosaic imagery from the MA/NH border to Fitchburg trailing SE
thru the Boston area and on into the northern tip of the Outer
Cape. This band lies on the northern end of a weak, broad but
slow- moving low which still is trying to pull away from Long
Island. Fairly impressive half-inch of rain fell between 23-00z
at BOS where 40 dbZ echoes have lasted for some time. That said,
thinking amounts this high probably aren't fully representative
of the entire rain band. South of this rain band across most of
the South Coast/Cape and Islands, very light rain or drizzle
has been falling, likely due to dry slot seen on GOES East low
level water vapor product. Fog or low clouds predominate across
central and eastern MA and RI, and was slowly beginning to lower
across western MA and much of CT where conditions are somewhat
drier.

Sfc and upper lows will continue to pull slowly NE into the
eastern waters and adjacent portions SE MA thru overnight. This
should cause the rain band to pivot across the North Shore,
Merrimack Valley into northern portions of Metrowest where the
most persistent rain showers should set up. Up to a quarter-
inch of rain is possible for these areas, with considerably
lighter rains south and east from here.

Next concern is extent of fog, which could be dense at times
into the pre-dawn/early-AM commute especially eastern MA and
parts of RI. Cooler PBL with trapped shallow moisture and
weakening wind fields as sfc low approaches suggest stratus and
fog are likely at least into eastern MA. A number of visibility
guidance suggest decreasing visibilities to half-1 SM after 04z
across eastern MA, potentially as far west as the Worcester to
Providence corridor. Could see a need for a fog SPS or perhaps
short-fused dense fog advisory for travelers but will let
trends dictate those decisions.

Prior discussion:

Tonight...

Surface low south/southwest of New England will slowly track
northeast overnight before ending up over Cape Cod by tomorrow
morning. As this occurs we'll the wind shift overnight to the
north/northwest across the interior in response to a cyclonic
circulation.

Forcing is weak with this low pressure system, but have kept a
slight chance for showers overnight into tomorrow morning. Also
can't rule out a rumble of thunder with weak instability in place.
Overcast skies and high dewpoints will keep low temperatures in the
mid-upper 60s. Should see some sea-fog develop along the coastal
areas that may result in reduced visibilities prior to sunrise. Not
expecting widespread dense fog, so have held off from a dense fog
advisory.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM WEDNESDAY/...
Tomorrow...

Surface low meanders off the coast of the outer Cape tomorrow
morning before moving out to sea. As this occurs we'll see a wind
shift to the south/southwest. This will result in strong advection
of warmer air and higher moisture into the region. This will begin a
stretch of oppressive heat that will last through Friday. ECMWF
ensemble situational awareness table is nearly maxed out in the 925
hPa specific humidity category tomorrow through Friday. Tomorrow
will actually be one of the "cooler" days with heat indices just
cracking 90 degrees in most areas. With sufficient instability
in place, especially out west, there will be a slight chance for
some isolated showers or thunderstorms during the afternoon.
Best chances will be generally west of I-495.

Tomorrow Night...

Light southwest flow prevails for southern New England. Chances for
isolated showers/thunderstorms will linger overnight and expand from
the western areas to the rest of southern New England as a weak
short-wave aloft moves over the northeast. Very little deep-layer
shear in the atmosphere so the severe threat is low to non-existent.
Another uncomfortably humid night with both dewpoints and
temperatures in the upper 60s - low 70s.

Details...

Wednesday through Friday...

Models continue to be in excellent agreement on a prolonged period
of oppressive heat and humidity from Wednesday through Friday.
Southwest flow along with 850 mb temperatures in the +19C to +21C
range should yield high temperatures in the lower to middle 90s away
from the immediate south coast as well as Cape Cod and the Islands
each day. There is even a low risk a few spots reach the upper 90s
on one of those days. However, actual air temperatures are expected
to be kept in check due to the fact that Southern New England has
had a very wet July. With wet (and saturated in some areas)
antecedent grounds, evapotranspiration would be in overdrive and
that tend to keep air temperatures a tad lower than if we were in a
drought or anomalously dry conditions like last summer. Nonetheless,
with dew points expected to be in the low to mid 70s, we continue to
have high confidence max heat index or apparent temperature values
(combination of air and dew point temperatures) will be in the 98 to
105F range. Besides, there will be little nighttime relief,
especially in the urban population centers like Boston. With
elevated air temperatures, oppressive humidity and little nighttime
relief , vulnerable population should take extra care to limit
outdoor exposure and be sure to hydrate regularly.

While Heat Advisories are pretty much a lock for much of the region,
we have opted to hold off on issuing heat headlines for now, partly
due to the possibility that we may have more widespread 105+ heat
indices which would actually warrant an Excessive Heat Warning.
Either way, the message on prolonged period of oppressive heat and
humidity for Wed-Fri is out and people should start making
preparations if possible.

The other concern will be the potential for diurnally driven
scattered showers & thunderstorms; particularly Thursday and Friday.
PWATs around 2 inches (near maximum of sounding climatology) and
relatively weak wind fields will result in the risk for torrential
rainfall and very localized flooding. However, much of this activity
will be hit or miss with many hours of dry weather. So we are not
expecting a washout by any means, but typical summertime diurnally
driven convection may result in localized heavy rainfall/isolated
flooding.

Weekend into early next week...

The biggest issue this coming weekend will be the timing of a strong
cold front given the differences in various guidance. If the front
moves slower; one more round of scattered showers & thunderstorms
would occur Sat. A faster frontal passage would allow much of Sat to
be dry along with cooler and/or less humid weather. Either way,
cooler and much less humid air will arrive by Sunday with dry
weather likely. Forecast confidence drops off for early next week.

.AVIATION /06Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...

Rest of the Overnight (thru 12z Tue): Moderate to high
confidence.

Generally VFR-MVFR ceilings/vis west of ORH, more LIFR-IFR
due mainly to stratus but also periods of fog across eastern
MA, RI and Cape Cod airports. Fog in these eastern airports may
become dense with visbys at times 1/4-1/2SM. Given inversion in
place, unlikely to see any improvement in ceilings or visbys
prior to 12z. Off and on SHRA or even DZ at periods for eastern
terminals. Light N/NW winds, calm to variable/light at times.

Today: High confidence in categories and trends, moderate to
high on timing.

Trend will be for improvement in flight categories across most
airports between 14-17z, except MVFR-IFR stratus and fog may
linger into the aftn for Cape Cod/ACK. Clearing to VFR by
afternoon, with isolated SHRA/TSRA mainly north and west of a
FIT-ORH-BDL line mainly ~18-00z. Winds become S 4-8 kt for the
interior and RI, E/SE at similar speeds eastern MA.

Tonight: Moderate confidence.

Any isolated SHRA/TSRA should generally diminish in strength,
though a period of light showers may linger into the overnight.
Ceilings/visbys also to deteriorate toward MVFR-IFR again,
though LIFR-visby fog more probable near South Coast, Cape and
Islands.

Wednesday: Moderate to high confidence.

Sub-VFR stratus/fog improves to VFR by mid/late-AM in the
interior, may still linger into the afternoon Cape Cod and
Islands. Mainly VFR for the afternoon. Potential for afternoon
TSRA near and N/W of ORH but questions on development and net
coverage. Any storm which does develop could become strong
quickly in this area, though.
