Radar and satellite imagery showing light precipitation spreading
across mainly the southern half of the forecast area this morning.
Snow levels expected to be around 3500-4500 feet today. Hi Res
models suggest that showers should begin to taper off later this
afternoon. Current forecast package has this covered, therefore no
updates planned at this time.

Generally MVFR conditions with local IFR conditions
across the mtns expected today due to precip and low clouds. Mtns
obscured across the region. Snow level 3500-4500 feet today.
Improving conditions expected late this afternoon prior to another
system moving Thursday. Surface winds: SE-SW 10 kt or less, becoming
SW-SE up to 20 kts this afternoon. Winds to 10kft MSL: SW 30-50kt.

.PREV DISCUSSION...
SHORT TERM...Today through Friday night...A rather weak and
disorganized front will stall out over the region today, keeping a
threat of showers going through the day. Cooler temperatures
aloft will help to mix out the lower levels of the atmosphere and
inversion. A strong cold front to the north, over British
Columbia and SE Alaska will move south and consolidate with the
trough off the West Coast over the Pacific Northwest by Thursday.
A warm front associated with this system will bring widespread
precipitation on Thursday under southwest flow aloft. Snow levels
will be around 4000-5000 feet on Thursday with the central ID
mountains picking up 6-12 inches of new snow, and 4-7 inches
across the mountains of SE Oregon. Precipitation will taper off
behind the warm front on Thursday evening before a narrow cold
front moves southeast. The highest peaks of the central ID
mountains may pick up 14-18 inches of new snow through Friday.
Southwest flow aloft will generally keep snow amounts under an
inch in the Boise metro and Treasure Valley through Friday.
LONG TERM...Saturday through Wednesday...No significant change to
the longwave pattern in the extended period with a high amplitude
ridge anchored over the North Pac/AK placing the Pac NW in persistent
trough. A nearly continuous progression of shortwave energy will
keep a fairly steady snowfall of varying intensity over the
mountains into early next week. Combined with gusty winds, this
will make for potentially dangerous travel conditions in the
mountains. Lower elevations will see more breaks, including some
mountain shadowing, and generally lighter intensity in snowfall. A
slight westward shift in the storm track will lessen precipitation
chances Tue/Wed, but this would come at the price of a colder air
mass. Temperatures cool to slightly below normal for Sun/Mon, with a
more notable drop Tue/Wed sending high temperatures to 15-20 degrees
below normal. As for snowfall, mountains will see a cumulative snow
total for Saturday through Tuesday in the range of 1-2 feet with
locally higher amounts. Below 4kft accumulations will be harder to
come by over the weekend but are certainly possible, even on
Christmas Day. The better chance for accumulating snow on valley
floors will come with the colder airmass next week, though initially
moisture looks to be in shorter supply.
