No significant adjustments were made for this update. Patchy
blowing snow with northwest winds gusting to around 40 mph
continues from the Devils Lake Basin to the northern James River
Valley. Elsewhere, winds continue to relax.

UPDATE Issued at 856 AM CST Fri Dec 24 2021

Strong, gusty winds along the cold front continue to be the main
forecast problem this morning. Many locations are reporting gusts
in the 40 to 50 mph range when the front moves through, but only
for an hour or two at most. Surface observations and area webcams
suggest the gusty winds are producing some blowing and drifting
snow from the Turtle Mountains area into the northern James River
Valley. A patchy blowing snow mention has been added to the
forecast.

Freezing rain has moved out of the north central portion of the
state. The Winter Weather Advisory for freezing rain has expired.

As expected, winds are quite strong with the front, but are
lasting only up to a couple of hours before dropping off to well
below advisory criteria.

.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)

Main forecast issues will be ongoing freezing rain advisory and
snow chances tonight.

Light rain continues to scoot quickly east through north central
ND. Although the heavier rain has moved east of the forecast area,
will likely leave the advisory go for this forecast package and go
back and cancel it at or before 6 AM. Temperatures are dropping
quickly over the far northwest attim, and expect any wet surfaces
will quickly freeze in the north central, so no concerns letting
the advisory go for a while longer.

Strong winds are also accompanying the cold front with gusts noted
to around 40 mph over northwest early this morning. Expecting a
couple hours of strong winds with the pressure fall/rise couplet (at
times into advisory criteria) before settling down for the
remainder of the day. Utilized the HRRR winds gusts through the
morning hours to account for the higher gusts. At this time will
not issue a wind advisory, but will continue to monitor.

Temperatures steady or falling today as most areas will have
likely seen their daytime highs.

Snow on the leading edge of the next system pushes into the
southwest this evening and possibly into the south central by
around midnight. Will cover this in the long term portion of the
discussion.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday through Thursday)

Main forecast issue in the long term period will be the system
taking shape over the southwest Friday night and spreading into
the south central before dawn Saturday.

Upper level trough off the Pacific Coast continues to dig south
with a broad southwest flow over the Northern Rockies and into the
Northern Plains. Late Tonight through Saturday an upper level
impulse tracks east along the ND/SD border. Meanwhile we have a
strong upper level jet just to the south and a surface low
tracking across central South Dakota. This setup is looking more
and more like a widespread light snow event across southwest and
south central ND. However, there are elements of strong FG forcing
and a tight deformation zone setting up right above the strong
upper jet, which lies right along the I-94 corridor.

Our main concern is that the qpf with this setup may be
underdone. You can see some of the mesoscale models coming in with
some higher qpf amounts. This is worrisome given the alignment of
the snow totals along the Interstate, on Christmas Day. One thing
in or favor will be the lack of winds. If we were looking at
strong winds a winter storm watch would probably be a no-brainer,
given the Holiday. However, with the uncertainty in the placement
and amount of qpf, but the thinking that the potential does exist
for some bands of heavier snowfall, exceeding 6 inches, we will
issue a SPS for this system, with this forecast package. The day
shift should have time to access whether an Advisory/Warning is
needed.

Another round of snow is expected late Sunday into Sunday night
as another, stronger, wave moves through the mean upper trough. At
this time it looks like an even more widespread area of light
snow can be expected, with possibly northern and eastern portions
of the forecast area favored for heavier snow amounts.

In addition to the snow, we will be dealing with very cold
temperatures and dangerous wind chills. At this time it appears
the northern tier counties may need a wind chill advisory during
the late overnight and early morning hours over the weekend. Next
week the threat for dangerous wind chills spread across the
forecast area, with high temperatures below zero across the
forecast area around midweek.

...ACCUMULATING SNOW EXPECTED SOUTHWEST AND SOUTH CENTRAL NORTH
DAKOTA LATE TONIGHT INTO CHRISTMAS DAY...

Snow will enter southwest North Dakota late tonight, spreading
into south central North Dakota overnight into early Christmas
Day. The snow will then gradually taper off from west to east
through they day as the main area of snow moves east. Although
some light snow will extend into northwest and north central North
Dakota, accumulating snow is expected to remain mainly along and
south of Highway 200.

Most areas south of Highway 200 can expect around two to four
inches of snow. Although uncertainty remains in the exact
location, confidence is increasing that a smaller area may
experience heavier snow rates, with 6 or more inches of snow. This
could set up around the Interstate 94 corridor. Holiday travel
will be affected, especially over those areas that receive the
heavier snowfall.

Another round of snow is expected later Sunday into Monday, and
again on Tuesday. In addition, dangerous wind chills are possible
late this weekend and through next week. Stay tuned for additional
